What is kia's midsize sedan called well it's called the optima dad nope you're wrong that's what it used to be called. What is it called now? This year, kia has changed the name from optima to k5 and that's what's. Behind us yep, the red one is the gt line: it's 28 000. The gray one is the ex it's 32 000. And what are we going to do in this buddy review? Well, we're, going to tell you everything you need to know about this brand new model. We'Re going to go over the styling interior comfort back seat space we're, going to see how fast they are from 0 to 60 miles per hour, see how quiet they are on the highway and then we're going to use the voice recognition to see if the car Can navigate us to snarfs sandwiches and, of course, at the end of this review, we're gon na, let you know whether you should buy it lease it rent it or forget it, but tommy. Why don't we start with styling. The new key 5 is entering a highly competitive marketplace. This new model competes with cars like the toyota camry, the honda accord, the nissan altima, the volkswagen passat i'm missing a ton of others. But the point is the midsize sedan segment is on fire, so they had to do something special to the styling and they absolutely 100 nailed the design of the new k5 we're going to start out with the design of the gt line.
Now the gt line is going to be your more sporty trim within the k5 lineup, keep in mind later this year, there's a full on sports trim coming called the gt that's going to have like 290 horsepower. This gt line looks like the gt, but it's got more of the entry level engine. So in the front here, we've got one of the coolest headlight light signatures. I think in the industry, when you unlock the k5. You can see this amazing light. Signature there's. This light tube that extends from the front of the headlights. It makes a sharp turn and then extends all the way back here towards the fender and when you drive along, they illuminate orange it's, just a it's, a really kind of jdm looking design. But i love it. I really love it now. There are some differences. When we take a look at the more luxurious ex trim, i mean you still have the same basic headlight design. Although you notice this one will have four led pods within, but the grilles are a little bit different between the two. They still kind of have that tiger nose, crimp in the middle here, but the actual grille design is a little bit different. The ex is kind of more luxury oriented what's. A little bit odd, though, is that, even though this ex is more expensive than the gt line by several thousand dollars, you don't actually get fog lights in this ex.
Where, on the gt line, you do get fog light, so that's kind of interesting dad. You want to pop the hood now under the hood of both of these you're going to find the same engine. These are both running the 1.6 liter turbocharged smartstream g engine, developing 180 horsepower and 195 pound feet of torque dad what's, the transmission it's, an eight speed, wet at least that's. What kia says dual clutch and they say it's very similar to the ones in a porsche and an audi. This is a very exciting new development within the hyundai and kia world. This new uh wet dual clutch transmission. It is so it's a it's lubricated uh, dual clutch it's supposed to be much better than the old dry systems yeah, because you know the problem with a dual clutch, of course, is they're really sporty and fun to drive, but in traffic they're kind of a pain In the butt, because they tend to kind of jerk the car back and forth uh i'm expecting to see some panel shifters but let's find out if they're back there yeah and we should talk about which wheels are driven. Currently, all k5s are front wheel drive, although all wheel drive is coming later this year, all right, tommy let's start with this, the more luxurious one, the ex and how much room is in the back seat. Well, i'm: six foot one inch tall rear seat room is pretty good. I'Ve got plenty of leg room here.
This is my uh seating position. Headroom is okay, it's kind of barely acceptable for a person of my height. You know these new sedans now have that sloping? Roofline to make them look more like coops, which does hurt rear seat headroom, but this one is okay, all right, dude, hop in the front, let's go for a ride all right! Tommy before we talk uh numbers. Where are my paddle shifters what's? The use of an eight speed, dual clutch, that's, wet or dry, if you don't, have paddle shifters. Well, if you notice over here, yeah bam check that out now you've got your uh sport shifting there first of all stop for a sec. I want to show something on this. This looks just like the shifter out of like the mid 2000s audi and volkswagen product there's a little button here, yeah it's just an observation but yeah. I agree: there's no paddle shifters, so let's talk, numbers what's, the exact price and fuel economy on this guy. This ex in gravity gray, has a total msrp after destination of 32 355 dollars, it's rated at 27 miles per gallon city 37 miles per gallon highway and 31 combined. Now this car is loaded because i see things like uh. Look at that i've got not only heated but also cooled seats. I love that yeah and look at this heated steering wheel, yeah and it's got the full panoramic sunroof up here as well. Yeah pop it open pop that open yeah.
Look at that! Oh yeah! That'S. Awesome and i got drive mode so uh well. This is not the sporty one i'm going to put in sport mode, just because well we're going to do a 0 60 merging onto the highway, so we want to give it the best shot of going quickly. How fast do you think this is 0 60 what's, your best guess at a mile above sea level, with three people in the car i'm gon na go with eight seconds in the real world, so we'll see if i'm right, i think, you're being optimistic. You don't think it'll be eight. What do you think it'll be it'll, be slower, it's, a 1.6 liter that's, a pretty small little engine turbo turbo, mind you yep! Now this one does have the bigger screen right yeah. This is really cool. So this is the 10.25 inch screen it's part of the ex premium package. It does have a volume knob, but if you notice along the side, all these buttons are actually touch sensitive, which i'm kind of on the fence about. But when you actually get into the screen, it does cool stuff like this. When you tune the radio, you actually have like these little uh. What do you, what are those called? You would know diodes diodes. That way, i would know what those are not what i was implying, but yes, that's exactly what you're implying uh. It also has wood here or at least i'm sure it's, real wood, i'm hoping it's real wood across the dash.
You have a uh i'm, not sure the real stitching here is actual uh, stitching, yeah leather, but it's nice. It feels good okay, so we've got the 0 to 60 mile per hour test. Coming so come to a complete stop, then what we do in these tests is we just floor it to see how they perform in the real world? Make sure you hold this it's going to slam against the here? We go floored merging and we actually are emerging. This time come on turbo six, seven, eight, oh it's wrong. Oh nine point one two from zero to sixty miles per hour and now kia says that um this engine will make all of its torque at just 1500 rpm wow, which is pretty good. So the idea with this one six is that you're not waiting for the turbo to pull up. There was a little bit of turbo lag there's a little bit but yeah i mean. Hopefully you just plant your foot to the floor and off you go. How quiet is it let's get my little sound meter going here: Music it's about 65 decibels at 60 miles an hour, that's, very quiet, now, we're rolling on uh pirelli, p zeros, which are uh. You know pretty darn sporty tires for what is basically a luxury sedan. Yeah, i mean even these luxury oriented kias they're, going for a sporty vibe. So if you look at this vehicle's cousin, the sonata that one's a little bit more kind of smoothed out this one's trying to be a little bit more aggressive, a little bit more kind of track, focused even in the luxury trim.
Well, dude, are you hungry? Yes, i want a sandwich all right, let's, try, please say a command navigate to stars. Number none of the above geez dad we're gon na be searching for a long time here. Um nope nope, all right that did not go super. Well. Sorry cancel yeah, yeah, no that's cool, but uh i'm gon na give that a fail. Let'S, look at the math too. This is a big screen 10.25. This is what same size screen that mercedes is using in their uh their luxury cars. I hate when they're going down i'm going up push the button that zooms in and out. How do you flip it? Oh geez, yeah, now i've messed it up now, you've done it. Yeah there's got to be a usually the way. You got it good job. There we go yeah. This is a cool screen, still not huge about on these like touch sensitive buttons. They'Re, like you, know, they're a little a little slow to respond sounds of nature by the way that's open air cafe thousand nature's right here. There you go you're gon na have to make me use the restroom dad if you've gone the rainy day, all right, let's uh rate, our hula girl in her hula dancing, i'm gon na hit the rough parts of the road. One is no dancing.
10 is like cooling like crazy let's, see how she's doing yeah i'm gon na give her like a three yeah i'm gon na give her a three as well there's, not much hula dancing going on very refined ride, yeah hold on keep it uh up there for A second longer we got more bad road right here. Are you stopping it from holy dancing? No sure look, she can dance as much as she wants all right, all right, yeah. She did really well there. So these sounds of nature pages. By the way, i want to talk about these yeah it's a it's, a feature within this new kia, and the idea is, if you're, coming home from a stressful day at work, you put on the lively forest Music. How about the calm sea waves? Oh yeah that one's gon na make me pete too yeah. Okay, there's some. I like snowy village, ready it's like a yeti, walking through your k5. It sounds like somebody crunching styrofoam. I hate it. That'S funny, yeah, it's, true and there's. A weird thing about this bigger screen right: you don't get uh wireless apple carplay with the bigger screen, but you do get it with the smaller screen, so that gt line has the like the eight inch screen right and that one yeah, like you said you can Just have your phone in your pocket connect wireless carplay there's, something pretty cool here: it's got wireless charging for your phone and the way it works.
Is you just kind of stick it into this little hole and it slots in place and charges, but look how far down it goes? You can't see it it's way down there. You can't read it. What, if you're like i'm, not saying you should never read and drive, but what, if you're, trying to navigate oh and then use carplay, yeah, uh huh, you guys were thinking yeah there you go so dual zone automatic, climbing here yeah one thing that kia doesn't love Is they've got three zones or three um fan settings for the auto that's nice? So if you want, like gentle auto, you can have gentle auto. If you want aggressive auto, you have aggressive auto. All of the safety features, of course, are available here uh. So you know we're talking autonomous, braking uh blind spot monitoring, uh lane departure warning so part of the ex premium package too. You get forward collision assist um with cyclist detection, wow yeah, pretty cool stuff. You also get the safe exit with power child locks in the rear, smart cruise control with stop and go yeah. So pretty much every safety feature you could imagine or convenience feature on the highway you're gon na have in the ex at thirty two thousand dollars. I mean once again: kia has proven that you can get so much luxury for not a huge amount of outlet. Well, the question is: is the red one sportier and more fun to drive so let's jump to that one and find out tommy, as you can tell, by the flat bottom steering wheel? We are in the gt line, yes, that's right, which means i have to switch monrone's.
Okay, what's, the cost 28 400. This one is in passion, red great color. By the way, i love the name yep, and this one is rated at 27 city 31, combined 37 highway, which is the exact same as the other one, which makes sense, because it's got the same engine yeah you got the same, powertrain same dual wet clutch transmission Same lack of paddle shifters, but you do have a smaller screen yeah. This is the 8 inch screen and i think it's better, actually, because you have tactile buttons along the side of the screen for your radio and your media. This one doesn't have navigation included, like the other one does, but it has a tune. What a day i'm with you dude. I like that one better great day we also don't have things like uh heated and cooled seats. No, we don't. These are actually the gt line seats so they're a little bit different they're like partial leather and then um cloth on the inside. Do you like the gt gt9 seats or the ex tree seats more? I like the gt line seats because they say gt line. Look at this, oh trouble start up again there. It goes so other things that this one has is the gt front wheel, drive premium package that gives you the panoramic sunroof the led projection headlights forward collision assist cyclist forward collision assist junction. Turning it's got the smart cruise control and your favorite the wireless charger.
Oh, i love the wireless charger, it's so cool. I like this one better. Not only is it less expensive but sometimes less is more and in this case that's certainly uh. True uh for the gt line you don't have the cool wood along the dash, so this is kind of like a more scratchy material. Yeah that's, okay, it's, like you, know, faux fake, pretend carbon fiber, faux fake, pretend carbon fiber exactly right. They still have dual zone automatic climate control, yep that's a really great feature – and you know, since this has that spoiler on the back of it i'm betting – that it's gon na be faster zero to sixty. What do you think with the spoiler yeah? The spoiler is gon na make it faster. Only time will tell well time will tell now because we're about to merge onto the highway, how fast was the other one. I think it was nine point. One nine point one two, oh is: is it gon na work? It might not work that's so good. Now we tease the zero to sixty time and it's, not gon na work. Uh let's see let's, see if it works. You wan na come to a stop. I'M gon na come to a stop and see if it resets itself come on reset yourself there. It goes okay, ready to start to get into the thing question support mode: yeah go for it, i'm actually rig twerking, it that's cheating.
Why not? Here we go five! Six: seven: eight 9 whoa you shaved off 0.02 of a second with that brake torque 0.02. So pretty much identical. Yes, i think that's about as close to identical as you're ever going to get but that's okay, i mean it's uh it's it's plenty, quick for driving around the city and we should explain there is the high performance gt coming with 290 horsepower and 311 pound feet Of torque yeah and keep in mind again, we are at a mile above sea level, three people in the car. This is more of a eight seven second car at sea level. Did they make it louder, yeah, so that's about 65 decibels about the same yeah it's about the same? This is more of like you know how amg does like the amg lines or the s line for audi yeah that's. What the gt line is exactly right: tommy um, so you know the thing about kia is they're, always like the underdog in the car world right they're, always trying to work harder, trying to give you more for less money and trying to prove themselves that they're. You know no longer the entry level brand, but now you know working with their way up to almost german level, because the head designer for kia of course used to be the head designer for audi, and you can still get a strong sense of that. I still kind of feel like i'm in a budget audi in some ways yeah, but the issue is: is that for audi at least this budget audi is now almost as nice as the uh, the full premium brand i mean the materials in here are nice uh And this one for 24 is is very well equipped.
The k5 starts at about 24 um, and then you know you can go all the way up to the the fully spec exes into the 30s. What do you think of the name? K5? I mean i kind of like the name: optima i'm – not i'm, not like uh. You know in love with alphanumeric designations and i kind of wish they had just stuck without them. Well, you got to figure that there's going to be more coming right, like a k3, k6 yeah. Okay, no, like everybody else, like a you, know three series, a five series, a seven series: why why go and try to out german, the germans at least keep those kind of cool original names i grant you optimo was kind of this made up word right. Somehow, seemingly suggesting that it was optimal or optimized for perfect driving, you know yeah, but keep in mind in korea, south korea. The k name is pretty like, for example, the k900 in south korea is called the k9. Your fingers aren't, hitting that they're not hitting her she's fine on the side, put them on the side. Here we go the rough road, oh that one's dancing more. It might be a little bit more tuned to a sporty character of the car. What do you think? I'D, give that a four i think i'm gon na give it a five it's, definitely much firmer all right, tommy let's, head back uh and find out what rating would give both these cars.
Should you buy it lease it rent it or forget it? All right, let's see all right tommy on the tfl scale of buy at least a renter forget it. What do you give the two k5s so i'm going to give the gray one a buy at the ex, because i love all the luxury features for 32, 000 and i'm going to give the red one eliseth. If you want a gt line, i would say just wait for the full on gt i'm going to go, the exact opposite way, buy the gt line and lease uh the more expensive ex, because i just find the gt line more fun.
