The 2021 Porsche Taycan EV Is Rear Drive Bliss
The tycon no numbers, no letters, no descriptors, no controversy, just tycon it's the base model that ditches the front motor, but this rear driver does keep the unique two speed transmission and a rapid charging rate of up to 270 kilowatts. Good news. This is significantly less expensive than the 4s by some 23 000. The bad news is the base. Price is still 81 250 bucks and you're going to want to have some options, but then there's, good news, there's still a 7 500 federal tax credit available, maybe use uncle sam's kickback for extras. It would nearly cover the premium package that would add, bose, sound, better vented seats and a panoramic glass roof, plus the 800 frozen berry paint and the interior is blackberry have to believe. Prince is looking down on this with a grin. If i had 10 bucks for everyone that gushed over this combo, i could buy this car. Well, not this one. As a euro spec vehicle it's headed back to germany, once u.s automotive riders are done with it. The sweet spot for tycon pricing settles at around 105 000, adding air suspension all wheel, steering porsche torque vectoring upgraded brakes head up, display and night vision easily pushes it towards 120 grand and raiding. Your 401k is bad advice as far as sound goes. Tycon doesn't make much it's an ev i'm gon na stop talking and just let you listen to it. It'S kind of cool the 500 porsche electric sport sound is on even without it porsche motors have a deeper tonal quality compared to other evs seems like there's, a bit less aural character than in turbo and 4s models, probably because of the dual motors.
There is no epa range estimate at this writing. This one has the larger 93.4 kilowatt hour, lithium ion performance battery plus pack a premium of 5700.. I only have this car for about five or six hours, so i can't do a real world range test, but a 4s is epa rated at 227 i easily get 270 miles out of charge. Edmunds saw 318., so this one should be about 10 percent more efficient. So long as the temperature is above 60 degrees, it should easily pass 300. it's ev 101 temperature effects range because i care more than i should. I highly encourage anyone buying an electric car to check the consumer experience reporting on the epa site, plus different ev forums, to find the real world range, because some manufacturers are very optimistic. Others like porsche. Quite conservative the single motor is tuned for a little less oomph than the rear unit found in 4s. With the standard battery it makes 402 horsepower and 254 pound feet of torque and i'll note that its max charge rate is 225 kilowatts. The plus pack charges faster at 270 and the motor is more powerful, 469 horses and 263 pound feet. Naturally, the pack is in the floor. There'S little drama on startup. The two speed gets one of the few electric selectors. That feels right to me. Tycon'S dynamics can be set up many different ways, depending on your mood and driving situation. Level 2 home charging is done on the driver's side dc fast charging is added on the passenger fender porsche offers three years of free, electrify america charging.
Yes, the bigger battery does provide more horsepower and torque, but the 0 to 60 time remains the same porsche says it's 5.1 seconds. It tends to be very conservative and i'm thinking that the frozen berry paint is good for shaving off at least a tenth of a second under hard launch. The tycon turbo's two speed can be felt here, it's very subtle. This is a blast to accelerate in i, like electric cars, porsche says this is the most powerful standard model it's ever made. That said, this is not the fastest ev out there and it doesn't make fart sounds, but just like choosing a marriage partner, it's wise to consider more than just one facet. All tycons are girder solid, with steering that has a lockdown on center field and the base model has its own character. While porsche does tune, its all wheel, drive systems to have more of a rear, drive dynamic this one. This one really feels rear drive. If you kind of punch it, you can feel it in the seat of your pants because of the motor delete. The nose is a couple hundred pounds lighter that's got to help handling every tycon that i've driven has been a joy to drive. Electric cars, of course, have that advantage of having the heavy battery in the floor certainly helps the center of gravity it just whips around corners porsche claims. Tycon has the lowest center of gravity of its road legal vehicles, standard porsche, active suspension, management or passim changes.
The ride quality from softer for highway cruising to firm for mountain road gymnastics, the most comfy setting is hardly like an old buick porsche does not offer an aggressive one pedal driving mode in the tycon it's like a regular car. When you want to stop it, you use the brake pedal. Also, the actual brakes are excellent. It is a porsche after all, and the transition from the regenerative braking to the actual physical disc brakes is seamless and no the frozen berry paint won't. Stop it any quicker. I still think it's faster, though just like the turbo models and the 4s, this ticon is very quiet. All you really hear is some wind rushing over the body and a little bit of tire noise, but not an awful lot. The coefficient of drag is as low as .22 impressive tycon's cockpit feels like one. It doesn't have the open airy feeling that skateboard platforms can provide. It looks great and the blackberry colorway is soothing, funny i'm craving a grape, jolly rancher right now, as equipped there's. A little more overt plastic than expected in a car, this spendy, like everything in life, more money, rectifies that there are all sorts of trim options. Just like porsche's inner drive, adaptive cruise control and lane keep system is a 3600 package. It is the way most of the controls are haptic touch surfaces, these feel much better than most this being a euro spec car. There are no north american maps, so i can't judge the full operation but i've driven u.
s ticons and find the configurable user interface to be quite good and responsive. Not only is there apple carplay apple music is built in. So if you forget your phone, you still have tunes one thing: that's the same on all ticons is the console lid trying to get in and it doesn't stay up. It'S kind of fussy i'm, not sure why i really don't like this, but got ta, find something not to like about this car other than the price. Daikon'S back seat is custom made for two average sized adults, in other words, a little snug two plus one seating is optional. Evil twin would lament the lack of seat pockets but would enjoy the 990 dollar rear climate zone. Heated cushions are available here. This is the third ticon i've driven. Fourth, if you count the concept and yet i've never done the tp trunk test with one how exciting there is an included charge cord that adapts from 120 to 240 voltage. So you can mooch off your friends when on a road trip, there are some niceties in the well trimmed trunk too no remote releases dropping the seat backs mean going around to the back doors. There'S, no ski pass through. That would make this boot more useful. At least the seats lay perfectly flat, no word when the crossturismo version will hit the market. Surely it will have more utility than this four packs is kind of skimpy and yes, there's storage up front, but not an awful lot.
You can tell the light is fading. This is the martini shot folks let's go to red light, green light, green light. The base tycoon is significantly less expensive than the 4s and its rear drive dynamic will appeal to some. The overall driving characteristics are the best i've experienced from an eevee and yes, i've, driven almost all of them outside and in taikon is elegant and refined when it comes to design and i'll point out, porsche, isn't afraid to offer paints other than white silver gray and Black thank you yellow light. It may have one of the longest ev ranges on the market, but it seems. Porsha only gives worst case numbers, maybe that's good, but it is confusing the blazing max charge. Speed of 270 kilowatts depends on finding electrify america stations which are improving, but i've had mixed experiences with those the crafted cabin has a bit more obvious plastic in it, if not spruced, up with optional trim and there's, that console lid red light, porsche goodness and build Quality means porsche. Pricing always has always will those equating speed with price won't find rapid transit value in taikon and travelers that chronically over pack? This car is not for you at this moment in time. Buying an ev requires some deliberate planning that many people won't tolerate. They aren't for everyone, but things are rapidly becoming better that i drove this car all day. Shooting running footage and doing hard launches, then returning it with nearly half the pack left says a lot.
I continue to believe that owners need home charging to make ev life practical, but convinced that most buyers believe they need more range than they really do. Personally, i would be torn between this and the 4s here in the pacific. Northwest the roads are often a little bit damp and slippery and all wheel drive would really be appreciated, but i sure do like the cost savings on this one that's for sure the base version has a character that's a little different from its siblings. Even without the front motor, it remains one of my favorite cars and that's. Considering vehicles twice the price yes, it's, spendy still porsche opens the door to electrification for more buyers with the less expensive tycon and who else gives you choices like frozen berry paint? I will point you to my other tycon reviews for more detail, especially if you're interested in the 4s and the turbo. The 4s piece covers range and charging in more detail and again i've driven a lot of teslas and i like them. But the company offers no support for writers, so i pass when producing videos. Other people do them go. Watch theirs and i'd have to borrow somebody's private vehicle for three or four days to make the review accurate yeah. I only had this for most of the day but i'm already familiar with tycon, so i took it. This is the end of the video where i normally have a fun fact and this time it's about how i produce these videos.
I think you all know that i shoot write and edit them rob. Calero was driving, so i could shoot the running footage. But what you don't know is i'm constantly detailing the vehicles, because when they're going back and forth, they get dirty lots of road grime and the road is kind of wet. So there was a lot of mud on this and you know you got to keep them clean right. I mean it's, a beautiful car you want to show it off got a lot of. Compliments on this really did in the short amount of time that i had it, and now i have to return it so see. You later folks remember to subscribe.
That is an interesting color.
This channel deserves more subscribers .You can tell you do great work, and it shows
Your reviews are so complete and well produced. Awesome video. Love Taycans despite their range being behind Tesla’s
Thank you Tom concise and clear reviews, I love ev too….I imagine 2 years for me…probably never for a Porsche….jeeze Louise lotsa dough for a car! Thank you again…
Great review, Tom…
Finally a metal roof. Glass roofs in 100+ degree weather sucks.
Yep, people that drive a Tesla in Miami go bold.?
I am not a fan of being in my own personal terrarium.
Great review! I have never considered spending even 80k on a car, but this is first new car in a long time that i’m excited about.
Rear drive. I like.
Why do I recall the Olds Aurora from the front 3/4 view?
I prefer physical buttons for things like HVAC controls.
Love all your videos. The writing is fantastic. Keep up the great work. Hope your subscriber base keeps growing.
Another great review Tom! You are spot on about range and this car might be quite usable with the standard battery (while being even lighter and a better value). The recent introduction of the e-tron GT adds the complication of being priced at the RWD Taycan level (similarly equipped) while offering 4S powertrain and the large battery. Choice is good.
Why do you always spend so little time on the tech, the dashboard, functions etc.?
The colour is nice… I’m not too sure about the rims
I agree. They look like plastic wheel covers!
Man, these wheels are horrid. They look like Autozone plastic hubcaps from the 90s…?
The design is fine, it’s the gray color that makes them look like plastic hubcaps. A deeper and more glossy gunmetal shade would look better.
Thanks for a great review and thanks for the spritzing and wiping, too! 🙂
Great review…definitely on my radar!!
I know it’s likely impossible but it just occurred to me that I’d love to see you do a collab video with Howard Roark of the channel, HR in a Car. Same generation, British, he seems like he’d be a fun foil for your straight-man YouTube personality.
Can’t imagine testing a New car without watching Tom’s review first. The Cadillac of car reviews.
Probably the ugliest rims I have seen in 10 years
