Yes, we're back same electric vehicle charging bay, same electric mini cooper, se and we're doing essentially the same thing. Putting the cooper's 230 kilometer range to the test, but this time on a slightly nicer day, we're doing it a bit differently, because you asked us to Applause previously on car advice, we put the mini cooper, ses range to the test around urban melbourne and discovered that The efficiency of the regenerative braking made it wholly possible to achieve the claimed 230 kilometer range at city speeds and well, you were happy with that, but we also tested it at a sustained speed of 80 kilometers an hour where we ran it from 100 to a 50 charge and managed again to be on track for achieving the range goal, and this is what caused some contention to many readers and viewers. It wasn't a real world test, as in every other city other than melbourne, you can travel at 100 kilometers an hour on urban freeways plus doing it at night. Didn'T represent an accurate environment, so we're back and we're doing it. The way you wanted this time, we're going to drive at an average sustained speed of 100 kilometers an hour to see if the 230 kilometer range can handle that kind of driving and if we don't do it and sort of the battery dies. Trying well we've got a little bit of help to rescue us. Let'S hit the road okay. Well, as you can see, we are on the road during the day, with traffic to try and simulate a as real a scenario as you asked for now.
Currently, where we are, the limit is 80, but where we're going to the limit is 110, so it'll mean that we can even out and uh hit an average speed of 100 kilometers an hour. Now there are a couple of things that we do need to take into account on this trip, the first being it's a pretty warm day, so the cars climate control system is actually on we've got our energy recovery set to its strongest possible setting, but everything else Is in normal mode, we don't even have the car in uh basic green mode. We are in standard running mode because again you ask for that plus i've had a shave because you asked for that as well, rather than run the car to 50, like we did. Last time, we're going to go as far as we can before the car runs out. The plan is to head out of town to a 50 charge, turn around and see if we can make it back to the charger and if things don't work out well, we've got a plan for that too. Music we've done 50 kilometers roughly, and things are a lot more uh. I guess thirsty than they were around town we're, seeing an average of around 16 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers being used, which is about four kilowatt hours per 100 more than we were seeing around town. Currently, when we got it when we got into the car it suggested, our range would be about 160 kilometers we've done 50 kilometers, and it is now suggesting our range is going to be about uh 130 kilometers.
So i don't know if we're going to make it there, we go i'm saying it here. We are at 50ks. We are at 77 charge Music. Well, what a difference a few kilometers and, more importantly, a few kilometers downhill make. We have just ticked over 80 kilometers usage has dropped to an average of 14.3 kilowatt hours per 100 kilometers, so uh. The climb that we did out of melbourne uh has obviously used more battery, then coming through a sustained bit of flat and downhill to kind of. Even out the ground has given us some energy back. What we're going to do, rather than get stuck out here on a very fine day, is initially we thought we would either go half the range, so travel 115 kilometers and then turn around for a a combined loop of 230 or which is what's looking more likely. We'Re going to run the car to 50 and then turn around and go back so it evens out the ground, meaning that whatever we've gone up, we come down and whatever we've come down. We go up on the way back, so we're still not there. Yet we're. Still looking at that trailer uh, which is ahead of me, uh as our get out of jail free card – and i would like to share with you now that right now i can't think of anything. I want to do less than put this car on the trailer. We are at 51 after traveling uh a bit over 110 kilometers, 111 now and that's, basically our cue to find somewhere to turn around and go back and see if we can get this working uh to even it out.
But what it says is that if we've gone halfway at 110, kilometers well, then potentially there's 220 kilometers range in the in the little mini. Do you know what i know? I know that we're going to end up on the side of the road fitting this thing to a trailer, but that's only going to be more fun for you. I can see an intersection coming up time to turn around things were looking good. Our efficiency was improving and the distance to the charger was in line with our remaining range, but it wasn't long before things started to uh change. We'Ve done 145 kilometers we're heading back to melbourne, but range anxiety levels. If you will have increased considerably in uh for team mini here, because according to the car, we have 33 of our battery remaining and according to our trip meter here we have 56 kilometers remaining. So you know it's all going to even out quite well the issue being our charger is about 20 kilometers further away than that it's. Looking like we're going to achieve a pretty good uh range here, but it also looks like i'm gon na have to put the mini on the trailer i'm really really hoping. The mini has a couple of duracells kind of stashed away that zero percent battery gives us an extra 20 kilometers range, because that would come in really really handy, and it feels like the entire way back to melbourne is uphill.
My fingers and toes are crossed, but i've got to say i i i i'm not i'm, not feeling confident the downhill efficiency boost we had heading out of town was now an uphill slog with the cruise control. Almost ensuring the mini was not working to optimal efficiency. There was no coasting no way to boost our range. Now i hear what you're saying james, why aren't you on a trailer relaxing all the way back to town with the mini towing behind you? Well great question turns out that loading, the mini uh onto the trailer. This is too low and, as we found getting it up over the ramp of the trailer, it was scraping the bottom of the car, and since we don't really want to break it, we had a quick look at the map and have found a type 2 charger That is 12 kilometers away from us, which is super convenient because we have exactly 12 kilometers worth of range, so we should get there uh with nothing to spare, which makes this an awful lot more exciting. But i can tell you that, oh there we go. Electric range severely restricted, it now says so for people watching at home. This is what range anxiety feels like that. We are here on the hume highway with trucks and other vehicles going past us and our mini is throwing up all sorts of amusing alerts to say guys. I think you have bitten off more than you can chew here, as it turned out.
The final 10 kilometer run at urban speeds, where we were able to use the mini's regenerative braking was our saving grace. Well, it turns out that all's well that ends well. Here we are, we found a charger. We actually achieved greater than 200 kilometers range at our sustained average speed of around 100 kilometers an hour, but i got ta say it was line ball. We arrived here with two percent range uh left. The car was throwing up all sorts of alerts, it's, not a great way to drive your ev. It was just lucky that we were able to find this and have the correct, uh cable in the car. What have we learned well once again, we've shown that the mini does what it says on the box. It does have around a 200 kilometer range. What we found, though, is that constant, 100k an hour highway cruising on undulating roads is not really the environment that the cooper se works the best. So if you're going to be doing long, distance touring that's, not your car, however, it still works really really well around town. It shows that if you do have charging infrastructure every 100 to 150ks, you can do long, distance touring in a car like the mini.
