First look: video directly from my office today is a big day for all you nissan fans out there, because the company has finally finally taken off the wraps off of the next generation z. Cars shown here in concept form nissan is calling this the z, proto concept and, as you can see from the pictures, it practically looks, production ready and the next generation z now in its seventh generation should be called the 400z when it goes on sale later next Year so without further ado, you guys have been waiting for a long time. Let'S. Finally, take a first look at this Music thing. Now. The nissan z car has a very long lineage here in america. In fact, the first generation z back then known as the fair lady z has been around for 50 years. The first model year came out in 1970 and nissan says that the united states is one of the biggest market of enthusiasts for the z car, because they have managed to sell over 1.3 million units or in the u.s. Ever since this car came out back in 1970, so obviously a new generation has been very long awaited for a lot of you, nissan fans out there and nissan has been teasing, the z over and over again the current one. The 6th gen has been around for over a decade. It last came out in 2009, so obviously we finally have the new z, proto concept. Car and really nissan should just go ahead and call this thing: the 400 z, those are the rumors that are circling around that the new name will be called that because underneath the hood it'll have a twin turbocharged v6, with around 400 horsepower remember.
This is the same powertrain that we find in the infiniti q50 and q60 red sport. Now let me first dive into the design of the new z, because this car is very much a throwback to the retro zs of the first generation model. In fact, when you look at the headlights, the headlight design of this thing it's got that classic half circle shape with the led daytime running lights. Remember these are full led headlights. The grille is also much more boxy it's, also a much larger grill versus the previous generation, and i really love the silhouette of this car. It really is a throwback to the original z's and when you look at some of the side profile, i see basically a mixture of all the generation of zs, especially when i look at it from the rear of the vehicle. Those full led tail lights, which have that kind of squared off rectangular shape or their full length, reminds me a lot of the 300 zx, which was one of my favorite z's back in the 90s. This is, of course, when i was still a kid. I also love the side profile where it has that sloping roof it's got that you know heritage design in the roof line and in the silhouette. Overall, i think the design department at nissan really killed it with this new generation z if they can keep the production car. Looking exactly like this z, proto concept, i think they'll have a lot of you know: fans out there that are very happy i'm, very impressed with what nissan has done.
They'Ve had a long time to get the z, the next generation z car out to us, and it looks like they took their sweet time and it may have been worth the wait now. This concept car also has these rather attractive set of 19 inch wheels, which look good. It has these large brake calipers or brakes behind it. Having painted yellow calipers as well. In fact, the entire car is uh painted in this really bright, shade of yellow, because that's, a throwback to the original z's they've, always shown the z car in that classic signature, yellow color, and it really adds to the overall ambiance or the aura of this car. So really we have a lot of new sports cars coming out that have come out in the in the recent years and the new z may very much be uh. The long awaited one, but it could be very much worth the wait now underneath the hood of the new z, i mentioned a twin turbocharged v6. Like i said this, is this should be the same one that's in the infinity q60 red sport it's a three liter twin turbo v6, with up to 400 horsepower. Now i would love to see nissan obviously offer a nismo version that offered a little bit more ponies, but this 400 horsepower number should be. You know a great. You know starting point for a base engine. The previous generation z remember offered either 332 or up to 350 horsepower.
If you guys went for the nismo model, we should expect the car to also be rear. Wheel, drive and the big surprise that nissan, of course, teases. The fact that you can get a six speed manual transmission with the twin turbo v6. So sorry, all you supra fans out there, which still does not offer a stick. Nissan will be having your number basically written, all over the new z car, because they offer that manual transmission with that twin turbo engine. They also said that an automatic is in development, which leads me to believe that it won't be using the 7 speed, auto that the infinities use, which let's be honest, that transmission was great probably seven years ago, and today, it's behind. I would love to see nissan put a dual clutch in this thing: uh for an automatic option, along with the car being rear, wheel, drive, of course now in terms of the size and dimensions. Nissan actually did have some numbers to share with us. It is actually going to be the same width as the previous generation or the current animation z, but at 172.5 inches long. This new z is about five and a half inches longer than the previous generation, and you can see that in the overall side profile. It definitely has a much more upscale, much more sports car like presence to it, and it really, i think nissan – did a fantastic job with capturing a lot of the modern cues, of course, with the retro cues and combining it into something that stands out today.
Now another indication that this car is practically production ready is, when you look at the interior, typically concept cars, they may have an interior, but it usually is like a steering wheel that would never pass. You know safety regulations. There are these crazy screens there's these crazy materials and whatnot or it's just often a drawing, but you can see the interior of the z. Proto concept looks like it's showroom ready. This should be exactly what the next generation z looks like on the inside, and i love the interior. That nissan has done here, of course, at the very tippy top of the dash. You have that signature three pod layout that z's have always had, especially since the 350z came out about 16 years ago, there's a new steering wheel as you can see, it's a three spoke wheel, although some i'm surprised it's, not a flat bottom design. Nissan is very quick to point out that remember this is a concept. There could be things that are changing, but this to me looks like it's done. The front and center of the screen or the interior is that information screen right behind the steering wheel. It'S, a 12.3 inch customizable instrument panel it's a fully digital display, which is the largest that i've seen any nissan product offer. Typically, they have those analog gauges with a smaller helper screen, love the fact that the tack is still front and center. Yet it also you know, looks very modern and it looks very crystal clear in the photos.
Looking around the side or around the center console center stack, you can see there's a massive nissan connect head unit there. They didn't share how large that display is, nor did they say if it came with android, auto with apple carplay. My guess is yes, because they did say this is of course brought into the 21st century. I am surprised to see that in this photo, the car has just a single zone, climate control, setup and manual seats. Now, of course, i'm expecting nissan to probably offer you know an upscale touring version, that'll, give you a dual zone setup and maybe some power. You know seat controls, a full power seat control, but what i love seeing is that six speed manual transmission – that is such a huge surprise and it's just a blessing if you guys, are looking for a manual transmission in today's, modern world. So, thank you so much nissan for giving us the option of a stick shift, but i would really also love to see what their automatic option will be. I'M. Keeping my fingers crossed, of course, for dual clutch transmission. Now nissan. Obviously hasn't announced when the new z will be going on sale but i'm going to estimate, probably sometime next year. We hopefully should be seeing something at one of the upcoming auto shows in 2021, we'll see a full production ready version of this car i'm. Expecting the car to start considerably higher the current z's like right over 32 000 bucks.
This new one should probably be right around base four cylinder, supra territory so expect this thing to be over 40 grand to start uh with fully loaded versions to probably go over 50 grand. Those are my estimates. Of course, nissan hasn't announced final pricing yet, but with the the new look, the new performance, the new technology that i'm seeing it's, pretty obvious that nissan is going to move the z a little bit further up market, which honestly that's perfectly fine with me. This is a car that should do well against the likes of something like the new toyota supra, a porsche cayman, of course, a ford mustang and a chevrolet camaro, and maybe even a dodge challenger. Those have always been the competitive set for the z, and i don't see this next generation. Z proto. You know deviating far from those competitors, but with all that said, i hope you guys have enjoyed my first look, video on the 2000 and not necessarily a 2022 on the nissan z, proto concept.
