However, if you're looking for a truck larger than your neighbor's f, 150, really, a super duty is the truck that i see the most of out on the road. In fact, between the big three gm ford and fca ford claims that they own about 60 of the commercial pickup truck industry. Now the ford super duty has been around since 2017 and now in its third generation for 2020. Ford has given this massive truck a complete refresh, and that includes an all new engine underneath the hood that's right. This thing has a 7.3 liter, 7.3 liter, nicknamed godzilla internally, naturally aspirated gas v8, underneath the hood with about 430 horsepower. Now it also has a new off road package called the tremor and painted in this shade of rapid red, with an extra two inches of ground clearance. This is certainly one of the most bad looking factory trucks that i've ever seen. So the big question i want to answer with its increased ground clearance, 35 inch tall tires and godzilla v8 underneath the hood. How does this all new f250 super duty stack up that's what we're here to find out Music. So in case you guys are new to my videos. You might also probably notice that i'm pretty vertically challenged at five foot seven and a big truck like this makes me look even shorter. In fact, when i open up the hood of this thing, i can't even reach the top of the hood i'm gon na have to stand on my tippy toes when i want to close down this hood.
But i wanted to start off this video by showing you this massive engine it's a 7.3 liter, naturally aspirated v8 it's, a pushrod design engine as well it's, an all new engine that ford is introducing on the superduty this year. It makes 430 horsepower and pound feet of torque. This is more power, obviously than what you get in the base engine was a 6.2 liter v8, with around 385 horsepower. Now, of course, in this segment, people love diesels as well, and the 6.7 liter power stroke turbo diesel v8 now makes 475 horsepower and 1050 pound feet of torque. So in case this doesn't have enough torque there's the diesel engine that's an extra 10 000. Now this gas v8 is a more reasonable, 2 000 extra, and it really gives this super duty a lot more horsepower and grunt. All the power goes out through a new 10 speed automatic transmission. The 6.2 will come standard with a six speed automatic this, and the diesel v8 will offer that 10 speed automatic transmission. Of course, this is a pretty big truck and even though ford has switched over the chassis um to aluminum on this new generation, it still weighs roughly 6600 pounds um. Luckily, because this thing is so heavy it's not required to be rated by the epa, so in terms of fuel economy numbers, we don't have that here for this four wheel drive version now in this segment of super duty trucks, bad styling is probably what people look For the most – and i probably say that the super duty really fits that description well, especially when you have it painted in this rapid red with the tremor off road package.
This one here is the fully decked out platinum grade, which includes kind of like a silver metallic finish to the grill. I much prefer this over the chrome grille finish that you get on the lariat package trim and you also get these quad beam full led headlights, which also are an option if you guys go for the lower trims of this truck. Now the big thing about these big trucks – they have these massive grilles and massive openings and occasionally stuff gets stuck inside. In fact, when they dropped off this truck there's, this massive bumblebee that's kind of stuck in the headlight it actually was alive. When i first picked this truck up now, it's kind of the poor thing is actually dead in there. But i guess if you guys, want to run over things and hit things that's. One of the reasons why you get a big truck like this. Just get a grille guard on the front, but in terms of the styling i think the ford made some smart key changes to it. I, like the quad beam full led headlights. I like how it spells out super duty on the grill. Just to remind you every day that this is a super duty and massive front tow hooks at the front because remember this is an off road oriented model. Ford gives you an extra two inches of ground clearance and underneath here, because this is the tremor package you have all of these front – underbody skid plates, because you really want to seriously take this thing off roading.
When you have this kind of equipment that comes directly from the factory now in terms of the rest of the proportions of this truck, you can take your pick between a super cab, a super and a super crew, which is the full four full size doors that My tester has this particular one. Here is technically the shorter bed it's around 6.8 6.8 inches six point: eight inches. I don't see any underbody skid plates on the front of that it's supposed to have skid plates that's. What ford said in the thing six point eight feet: long there's, also an eight foot, long bed as well, if you guys want to have the longer version of this truck, but because this one here is the crew cab uh with the shorter bed, it stretches 250 Inches long that's right, i said 250 inches long and its wheelbase is around 160 inches. With that extra 1.7 inches of clearance ford says the tremor package for four grand extra gives you around 11 inches of ground clearance. So this is about the same as what you're going to get from like a jeep, wrangler or ford's bronco upcoming bronco. So i think this is a really nice package. Now this particular one here also has these 35 inch tall, goodyear wrangler all terrain tires wrapped in an 18 inch wheel. It just looks really great, especially with the black wheels, the red exterior color. This is one serious truck that's going to get a lot of attention out on the road.
I think ford did a fantastic job with the overall styling of this thing. Now, coming around back of this truck, you can see that they also added some refreshed tail lights. This year, which are full led design, this is, of course, optional. I think ford offers a choice of three different types of tail lights: you're going to know this is the platinum model, obviously, in the back, where they add this platinum badge with the satin silver accents back here you have these nicely integrated parking, sensors and the exhaust System here has a nice, chrome, polish, so a 7.3 liter v8 is a massive displacement, so let's fire this baby up and see how it sounds Music, all right. So it has a pretty soft limiter, but i imagine some owners are probably going to swap out that factory system for an aftermarket one, because that is a mean sounding v8, a little yeah i mean it's way better than the ecoboost v6. You get in the f 150 and for a factory truck the exhaust is to mix a really nice noise. So if you guys don't like how muted the diesel sounds, go for that 7.3 liter v8 now in terms of the bed, they offer that remote bed release from the key fob as well. But you can see the bed is very nicely finished on this platinum version. It offers a lot of space in here. I don't really see the need to go for the eight foot bed unless you really plan on towing and hauling heavy loads back here you have led lighting back here.
You have the spray in bed liner. You have an actual, you know, power outlet back here, which is fairly nice and for short people like myself. This particular one here also includes the tailgate steps, so you can basically pull this out and it helps short people like myself get into the actual bed. So very usable truck i like how ford has you know, given you all the features that you expect, but really, if you guys, are planning to tow a lot of things or put a lot of things in here. Ford says this particular one here will hold a maximum of 3 400 pounds. Now, as most of you can imagine, a truck with nearly 12 inches of ground clearance can represent a little bit of a challenge for somebody who's vertically challenged like myself to get in. Thankfully, ford puts in these nice side steps here, there's also a nice grab handle here because, as you can see, the truck literally i don't even come up to half of it. I feel like this is a really tall truck so getting inside. You have to essentially kind of i have to step my leg up, pretty high and grab this little handle here and hoist myself up, but once i do that and pull myself out of the rain, you can see it's very comfortable in here and there's, a crap Ton of space, which is what you expect in a big truck like this, now shutting the door.
The door actually has a really nice solid funk. So that gives you a really great impression of quality and this interior, like every other f series truck isn't. What i would call luxurious, but ford has obviously done what they could um to this interior to make. It feel a lot nicer now here's the key fob for the truck. You can see it's the older ford key it's, a massive key. It does include remote start. You can also open up the tailgate and such i don't really like the cheap feeling plastics in this thing, and you can see there's a nice big, clear, digital lcd display in between the two analog dials for the attack and the speedo that what you heard. Of course was the gas engine. This is the new 7.3 liter godzilla v8 a little bit of a soft limiter, but it has potential it's going to be a really nasty sounding engine. When somebody puts in a nice aftermarket exhaust in this thing now uh. This is again a much bigger truck than an f 150 and ford just unveiled the redesigned f 150, which i haven't had a chance to look at. Yet this is the platinum trim of the f 250 with the tremor off road package. This is the nicest interior you can find in the current f series right now, you can see the dash has a lot of stitching on it, it's fake stitching, with some contrast, red piping.
This is soft touch. This is soft touch over here. This area right here is soft touch on the door panels, but this is all hard touch. Plastic, it's, real leather over here, with more of that contrast, red, stitching some silver painted plastic trim. The door handle of course feels a little cheap and flimsy the window switches. Do feel nice and high quality, it is only an automatic up and down for the driver and front passenger window it's a little disappointing. You could power fold the mirrors, which is important for a big truck like this. Of course, by the touch of a button, you can also extend these mirrors in and out because these are the tow mirrors, which of course come with this particular truck that i'm, showing you because it's fully loaded – and you have three person – memory seats, your power door, Lock, controls over here it's all car touch plastic down here with lots of additional storage. Your headlight controls are there. You can also adjust your pedals and whatnot there's, also a nice little flashlight or light and led light on both sides of the mirrors to kind of illuminate this thing. This is a really uh, fully loaded truck for sure. Now the seats you can see, these are basically a 12 volt power adjustment. They are heated and cooled which is nice. They also offer a massage feature, which is also really nice, so to access the massage. You feel for the button over here, or you can also do it through the screen.
As soon as you touch one of the little lumbar buttons you can see, i can basically go to massage here. Tap driver turn on basically low or off. It will massage the lower part of the seat and the upper part. So your back and your butt as well. You can also turn on the passenger side, massage if you'd like. So this is very unexpected. It works fairly well, i actually found the massage to be decent it's more than just one of that, those silly lumbar massages that go in and out it definitely actually does something and the massage basically stays on until i turn off the truck, so that's really nice. How the massage doesn't shut off automatically, which i also like looking at the center stack here you can see this is a very small eight inch screen. It looks small because the dash is expensive. I'Ll come back to that in just a moment. The steering wheel. I actually like the steering wheel on the super duty. It'S got some silver painted plastic trim here, which tries to look and feel like brushed. Aluminum looks nice. The steering wheel is powered tilt and telescoping, which is also nice. Uh gives you a good amount of adjustability. You have a standard column shifter over here for the new 10 speed automatic transmission. You can see once i put it in drive, it actually shows you all the gears and tells you which gear you're actually in there is a manual mode here.
You can also switch between different drive modes there's, a tow haul, an eco, a slippery, a deep snow and sand, and a rock crawl which the rock crawl comes with the tremor off road package, which is nice there's? No sport mode. Why would you even bother with a big truck like this on having a sport mode, there's? Also your buttons here to control this screen, where you can, you know, show all different kinds of information. The truck gives you. You know truck info stuff, towing, stuff off road information. You can go into your settings of course, and and mess with everything. If you go here, you can actually make the cruise control adaptive or you can also go to just a normal cruise control. I don't like how ford allows you to do both settings, but it is nice if, for those of you who don't like adaptive cruise control, i found the system in this truck works: okay, it's, not what i would say, tesla or like luxury brands in terms of How well it works, but it does work fairly nicely down here. You can see this is for your audio controls. This is for your bluetooth controls. You have your four wheel drive selector knob over here, your trailer brake controller over there. Of course, you have dual zone climate control, which is nice. You can see your cool seat buttons over here i like how ford is giving us traditional buttons, of course, which is good.
Your lane keep assist on and off is over. Here. You can also turn on the full 360 camera and a truck this size. This is very important, although the graphics are behind what i've seen in some of the newer gm vehicles with their latest system. This screen again, they could just get rid of this extra real estate here and just make this even larger, which they've done in the new f 150. This is like what i would our gm calls trail control or ford calls trail control. This is like an off road cruise control, which you can engage whenever you're driving this thing off roading. There is also different views to the camera system. Here you can kind of go into show you a front perimeter scan view, so this is all, of course, very nice. This is what you expect in this typical. You know segment of vehicles now i'm trying to get it out of the camera mode. There we go back to the screen here: there's the android, auto and apple carplay um, which again the graphics look a little bit old. Some of the other competitors have done better here, going back to the ford system here, i'm, not going to go too much into debt with this, because i've shown you this before in other ford vehicles, it does include embedded gps, which it will not show that to You now because my phone's plugged in but once i unplug my phone, you can see there's the ford gps and it looks okay it's a little bit sluggish as you can see, there's your you know what your audio information looks like when you have all your presets And whatnot down there so it's all fairly intuitive and easy to use um, but the screen itself is just looking tiny.
So this is one of the uh worst ones in the in the industry that i've seen for sure compared to the other. The other trucks. Now over here, you can see wireless phone chargers over here you have a usb and a usbc plenty of storage over here, which is nice. These things also come out whenever you want to clean them up or rinse them off nice padded area over here, big, deep storage cubby for the center console, which is to be expected, more cupholders, of course, that's. What people love about these big trucks? Plenty of cup holders – and you can see above me, big panoramic sunroof – lets in a lot of light. This is optional, of course, um. The glove compartment has two levels of storage which um the first. The lower glove box is not that big. This isn't that big either so in terms of glove box storage size, not great, but it is damped but not lined with felt the bang and olson sound system in my tester also sounds good, very unexpected in a truck like this, although i have heard better sounding Systems in the ram 1500, but i haven't driven the heavy duty version of the ram just yet, but overall, this platinum version of the f250 is definitely nice. Spacious. The massaging seats are a nice addition and these seats are also fairly comfortable, but if you're looking for the most luxurious interior with really top quality materials and real leather stitching, you may want to look at the ram competition.
So if you thought the f 150 had a really big back seat, the super duty has an even larger back seat, especially if you guys are looking for all this leg room back here now. First of all, if you don't need to carry people back here, you can fold this seat up to reveal a really nice amount of storage, there's, actually, lockable storage, underneath here, which is nice ford, gives you a little bit more hidden storage here. So again, if you don't need to put stuff in the bed and people back here, you can also put stuff in the actual cab now getting back here. There'S, a really nice side step here, which is nice for short people like myself, there's a nice grab, handle here to help yourself get in this truck, but once you're in here and shut the door, you can see ford says there's 43 and a half inches of Leg: room back here: 43 and a half that's the same as the front seat. So the back seats have basically the same amount of space. You can see at five foot seven. I can get really comfortable back here i could lay down, and if i had this whole seat to myself, i could probably take a nap on a long road trip. Um in terms of features back here. Ford also gives you two level heated seats. You have two usb ports, an actual power outlet here, a 12 volt right here, greasy air vents cup holders map pockets.
The materials back here are hard church plastic, which makes me kind of sad considering the price of this truck uh, but there's. Also a nice armrest. Here that gives you even more cup holders so again in typical american style fashion, there's plenty of cubbies and drink holders in here for those long road, trips and, of course, around this time of the year, there's, always some random rain shower that comes through. So i figured why not drive the f250 in the rain in these kind of conditions, because we've got the all terrain tires on this thing, so it should offer plenty of grip. Now, obviously, i drive a lot of different types of vehicles in my line of work and these big trucks don't scare me they are a little annoying to drive if you are in the city because of how wide they are because we're talking about a vehicle that Is 80 inches wide and almost 80 inches tall? This thing is four inches taller than something like an f 150, especially with you know, 11 inches of ground clearance. This is a big bitch as it goes down the road and it takes a little bit of time to get used to just how wide this truck is, but once you get used to that, it gives you a really nice commanding view of the road um. It just you feel, like you're king of the road, because this thing honestly feels like i'm driving a raptor.
It gives me the same kind of clearance that i get in a ford raptor, which is nice it's almost like the super dirty super duty version of the raptor, and these big toe mirrors also provide a lot of visibility, and i have blind spot monitoring. I have adaptive crews, i have automatic emergency braking and such so. This is, of course, a very modern truck full of modern conveniences that make driving a lot easier now with something this tall. With these bigger tires with off road ready suspension, skid plates and whatnot you're probably wondering how the heck is the ride quality in this thing, and it is definitely truck bouncy. Even on smooth pavement like this, it is a little bit annoying how it's constantly jittering about because remember we have live axles in the back leaf springs as well. You hear a little bit of tire drumming noise from the tires of course that's normal when you've got these big meaty tires on this thing, so in terms of a daily driver, if you're constantly driving around like the suburbs or the city or the town you're, not Going to want something this big, but if you're in the countryside, this is of course, going to be nice and spacious on the inside, because i have this commanding view i'm getting a massage here in these comfortable seats, and i also have actually pretty good amount of Power, this is my first time driving the 7.
3 liter godzilla v8 it's, a naturally aspirated pushrod v8. Of course, it's paired with a new 10 speed automatic transmission and right now the roads are a little wet, so it's having trouble putting the power down. Of course, even with these all terrain tires, these goodyear tires it's, spinning the wheels out a little bit but that's part of the fun of having a truck that's. You know rear wheel drive when you don't put it into four wheel drive. Of course it just. You know provides that comical fun of the rear, wheels, slipping and whatnot, but um visibility. Out of this thing is also pretty good. I can see pretty much everything out of the front. Everything just looks really small, like this little tiny, hyundai veloster next to me looks like a little like flea next to me in this big massive truck it's, actually kind of nice. How it's, like that now, this 7.3 liter v8 puts out 430 horsepower and 475 pound feet of torque. It essentially replaces the old v10 that you found in the older versions of these super duties, and the engine makes a nice noise. I, like the the v8 rumble that comes out of the exhaust. I imagine a lot of owners are going to put an aftermarket exhaust on this thing. I like the torque and the power it 0 60. Time, probably feels like the mid 7 second range. I think i've seen it around 7.5 seconds, which is plenty fast.
The 10 speed also has really nice quick, precise shifts, it's very well matched to the engine's power brand, but really, if you guys, are used to driving diesels in this type of vehicle, you're going to feel it's still a little bit light on torque it's, an engine That likes to rev, but if you don't have to deal with diesels or the cost of a diesel, because remember the diesel engine in this truck is ten thousand dollars more you're gon na wan na get this gas v8 for an extra two grand. This is a worthy upgrade over the six point: uh two liter v8 – that you get in the as the base engine. This is definitely worth it for me to go with the the bigger 7.3 and even as you pass like, f 150s and ram 1500s. This thing towers over them and that's kind of some bragging rights. People like these big trucks, because you feel, like you own the road in these things and you just feel really safe and secure. Even when it's raining like it is right now, like i don't, even blink an eye at this thing, the windshield wipers have a rain sensing function um. You know i feel like if i hit something i'll just run over it, it's just really nice. You know. I really would love to take this thing off roading, but unfortunately, a lot of the trails are still kind of closed off and i just didn't have a time to go looking for one, but really most people drive these big trucks out on the road, so that's, Primarily where i wanted to test this thing because let's face it.
Yes, this has a really nice off road package, but i really want to test this thing out more in daily driving because that's, where people spend the majority of their time. With these things, this can barely put the power down come on really smooth transmission, though i'm very impressed with how smooth the 10 speed is. The v8 is very smooth as well. It just has a nice effortless rush of torque and horsepower, and you know for a gas engine. I find this more impressive than the new 6.6 liter v8 that i test drove in the gmc sierra 2500. This feels like it has more power, which is nice. I have not driven, of course, a ram 2500 with their latest gas v8, but i would have to say that the ford's one is probably the one that i would go for it has the most displacement, it has the most power and it makes a really nice Noise now, of course, the downside between this big old gas v8 is the fact that it is a gas guzzler fuel economy, isn't even required to be rated by the epa. Because of how heavy this thing is, remember, it weighs 6 800 pounds and in my week's worth of testing, i averaged around 10.5 mpg in the city on the highway. I pushed it up to around 13 mpg, which is awful awful awful, of course, about to be expected for a big truck like this. When you've got a 36 gallon gas tank, this thing is roughly showing around 450 miles of cruising range, which is okay, it's, not wonderful.
If you guys go for an f450, i believe or any of the ones with the dualies, they can actually option in a 48 gallon gas tank, which i would hate to pay for the gas on that, even with gas as inexpensive as it is, but just keep In mind, the diesel engine would probably get closer to 20 mpg if you guys were cruising on the highway that's if you're, not towing um, but the gas v8 does offer plenty of power for most it's smooth, it's refined. Once you get used to the size of this truck, it is easy to drive, but the tremor off road package, unless you really plan to take this thing off, roading all the time which it's too big to really want to go off roading. In this thing, it does compromise the ride quality and makes this thing a lot more difficult to get in and out of, but it looks a lot more badass and for some of you that's, probably the reason for that reason is alone to get the tremor package For an extra four thousand dollars, so after spending a week with the 2020 f, 250 tremor it's pretty easy to see why so many americans love big trucks like this. They offer a really big amount of space on the inside. They offer that high seating position. You feel really safe, you feel like you can run over things. You feel like you're king of the road, and really what shocked me is how much i actually enjoyed driving around the f 250 i've always thought.
The f 150 was just the right amount of space, but when you go into a super duty, a three quarter, ton truck. You really feel a significant difference: uh when you're out on the road. Now the super duty model. The changes that ford has made for 2020 are, i think, some welcome changes. I, like the styling front and rear. I like the updates to the interior. I like that 7.3 liter gas v8. It makes a nice noise, it moves the truck out. Just fine and the tremor package also surprises me, because even though you've got these big off road tires the off road shocks, this thing still rides and handles really well when you're out on the road, i think that's the more important aspect, because, even though this truck Looks like it's ready to get dirty. Most of them are probably just going to be spending their time out on the road going to malls going to you know, work going to dinner and such are taking long road trips. I think this is one really nice family vehicle because of its massive backseat and it's just overall refinement now speaking of which, if you guys, are looking to pick up one of these new super duties, it does obviously cost more versus an f 150. This thing starts at 34, 000 for a base: f, 250 that's for a base model. This one here with the platinum package, the four wheel drive the v8 um the tremor off road package.
This thing stickers for a little over 77 500 now speaking, of which the platinum model starts at around sixty six thousand dollars, but my tester has around nine thousand dollars worth of options on it, which is very expensive. These trucks really have sticker shock for a lot of people, but a couple weeks ago i had a ram 1500 eco diesel, which was around 75 000. and really, i would probably choose this truck for a little bit more because it's, a bigger truck it toes and Hauls more and it may not get as good a gas mileage, but it just has a much meaner look to it. I think isn't that what's important for big trucks like this, but with all that said, i hope you guys have enjoyed my full overview on the 2020 ford f 250 with the tremor off road package.
