Exterior Design
BMW has taken a different approach with the design of the 2023 i5. Unlike the bold and distinctive lines of the iX and i4, the i5 appears to be more mainstream. From the front, it unmistakably resembles the traditional BMW 5 Series, with its iconic kidney grille and recognizable features. However, when viewed from the side, it becomes apparent that the design has been smoothed out and elongated to create a classic saloon shape. It’s a design choice that aims to appeal to a wider range of consumers.
However, I must admit that I have some reservations about the rear end design of the new i5. It appears a bit flat and overly busy in my opinion. Of course, beauty is in the eye of the beholder, so I would love to hear your thoughts on the matter.
Interior and Technology
Inside the 2023 i5, BMW has implemented its latest technology to provide a cutting-edge driving experience. The central curved display takes center stage, serving as the control center for most of the multimedia functions. The display is equipped with BMW’s latest software, which ensures smooth performance and improved user interface. Additionally, the recent update has introduced new shortcut buttons, making navigating through menus more efficient and intuitive.
Driving Dynamics
Now, let’s talk about what really matters – the driving experience. In my previous encounter with this car, I was impressed by its dynamics. The i5 delivers a smooth and exhilarating drive, much like its traditional combustion-powered counterpart, the 5 Series. Its electric powertrain provides instant torque, resulting in quick acceleration and responsive handling. The seamless integration of electric propulsion into the 5 Series platform is commendable.
Furthermore, the i5 boasts impressive range and charging capabilities. BMW has focused on optimizing the battery technology to ensure long-lasting performance and shorter charging times. With the growing infrastructure of charging stations, the i5 becomes a practical choice for daily commuting as well as longer journeys.
Is It Still a Proper 5 Series?
Now, the burning question remains – is the 2023 BMW i5 truly a proper 5 Series or just another electric vehicle with a different body? In my opinion, the i5 strikes a balance between embracing electric technology and retaining the essence of the 5 Series. It offers the same driving dynamics and performance that enthusiasts expect from a BMW, while incorporating the advantages of electric propulsion.
However, it’s worth noting that the i5 may not fully satisfy those who are looking for a distinctive EV with radical design language. BMW’s decision to opt for a more mainstream appearance might disappoint those seeking a bold statement on the road.
Ultimately, the verdict depends on the individual’s preferences. For those who prioritize the familiar character of a 5 Series combined with electric efficiency, the i5 presents a compelling option. However, for those seeking a more revolutionary and stand-out electric vehicle, other models in BMW’s i lineup may be more appealing.
Interior Features and Controls
The 2023 BMW i5 comes equipped with a range of buttons located at the bottom of the central console. These buttons provide access to key functions that drivers desire. Moreover, BMW has gone the extra mile by incorporating gaming options, allowing occupants to enjoy entertainment during the charging process. This focus on additional features demonstrates BMW’s commitment to meeting consumer needs.
Sleek Design and User Interface
In a style reminiscent of Tesla, BMW has placed the air vents in a semi-hidden manner, adding a touch of elegance to the interior. These air vents are controlled through touch panels located at the bottom of the console, further enhancing the modern design of the cabin. However, some may find the excessive use of gloss plastic a little overwhelming. Nonetheless, the overall fit and finish are precisely what one would expect from BMW, showcasing their attention to detail.
Comfort and Space in the Rear
Moving to the rear of the i5, passengers will be pleased with the ample knee and legroom on offer. However, it should be noted that the foot space may feel slightly cramped. Although the seats may appear flat, they are surprisingly comfortable and provide ample support. It is essential to mention that due to the i5’s availability with plug-in hybrid and petrol engines, there is still a transmission hump in the middle, resulting in a floor that is not entirely flat. This design aspect differs from the dedicated electric vehicle platforms, yet it does not detract from the overall spaciousness of the cabin.
Diversity of Charging Options
The i5 provides a wide array of charging options to suit various needs. USB-C charging ports are conveniently located in the middle and second rows, ensuring that passengers can charge their devices effortlessly during their journey. Additionally, the inclusion of a heating and ventilation control screen at the bottom is a noteworthy feature, allowing for easy adjustment of the cabin’s temperature.
With its emphasis on additional features, modern design, and comfortable interior, the 2023 BMW i5 successfully demonstrates that it is not just any old electric vehicle. Although it still retains some elements found in the traditional 5 Series, BMW has ensured that the i5 remains on par with the highest standards expected from an electric saloon.
The 2023 BMW i5: Is it still a proper 5 Series or just any old EV?
The 2023 BMW i5 is available in two flavors: the e Drive 40 and the M60. Today, we had the opportunity to test drive both models in Portugal. Initially, I found the regular version to be more comfortable. The M Sport version, with its M-tuned adaptive suspension, felt firmer and slightly unsettled over rougher road conditions.
While the M60 offers better performance and impressive acceleration, the regular version is more than capable of meeting daily driving needs. The slight increase in acceleration provided by the M Sport version doesn’t outweigh the drop-off in comfort. It seems that the M Sport version struggles to find the right balance between comfort and sportiness.
On the other hand, the regular e Drive 4 version is comfortable and feels like a car you could drive all the time. The i5 exhibits impressive steering, allowing for accurate placement on the road. While it may not have the “bristling feel” that journalists often mention, the steering is precise and responsive.
One notable feature of the i5 is the selection of driving modes. With a simple button press, you can switch between different modes, each accompanied by a distinct sound. These modes add an extra layer of customization to the driving experience.
The All-Electric Experience
The transition to an all-electric saloon is an exciting step for BMW. The i5 offers a glimpse into the future of electric vehicles. However, it is important to assess whether it still holds up as a proper 5 Series.
From a performance standpoint, the i5 delivers. It accelerates quickly, providing a satisfying burst of speed when needed. The power delivery is smooth and effortless. The electric drivetrain ensures a quiet and serene driving experience, allowing you to appreciate the refined nature of the i5.
There is a certain level of perplexity when it comes to the i5’s identity. While it retains the elegance and sophistication expected from a 5 Series, the electric powertrain undoubtedly sets it apart. It is not just any old EV; it embodies the progressive vision of BMW towards a more sustainable future.
Acceleration and Performance
When it comes to the 2023 BMW i5, the first thing that strikes you is its impressive acceleration. In the efficient modes, the car remains relatively quiet, but once you switch to sportier modes, it unleashes a louder and more exhilarating experience. This is not surprising, considering that the M version of the i5 boasts a dual motor setup. On the other hand, the regular version follows a more traditional rear-wheel drive setup, like most BMWs. Surprisingly, the single rear motor in the regular version still manages to deliver a pleasant sensation of being rear-driven, especially when navigating through tight corners. It may not be overly aggressive, but it definitely retains that signature BMW feel which enthusiasts crave. So, even though the i5 is an electric vehicle at its core, it manages to preserve the essence and character that the brand is known for.
Comfort and Seating Position
Stepping inside the i5, I immediately noticed the comfortable seating position. As a BMW enthusiast, I have always appreciated the low and cozy seating that the brand offers, and the i5 does not disappoint in that aspect. Moreover, the visibility from the driver’s seat is remarkable. The slim pillars and generous rear screen provide an excellent view of the road behind you. This is particularly crucial in urban driving situations where maneuverability and awareness are essential. Whether you’re navigating through crowded city streets or cruising on the highway, the i5 ensures that you are well-equipped to handle any situation.
M Sport vs. eDrive
Now, let’s talk about the performance differences between the M Sport and eDrive versions. If you crave the ultimate acceleration and blistering 0 to 60mph speeds of around 4 seconds, then the M Sport variant is the way to go. It offers unparalleled power and a truly adrenaline-pumping experience. However, for most of your day-to-day driving, you would probably prioritize range over raw performance. This is where the regular eDrive version shines. While it may not look or sound any different from its M Sport sibling, it allows you to go the extra mile between trips to the charging station. So, if you’re someone who values an extended range and less frequent stops for recharging, the regular eDrive version would be the ideal choice for you.
Range and Performance
By about 30 to 40 miles so its not massive, but I do think that that extra range is always useful and the regular version still feels more than quick enough. The regular e Drive Ione 5 will do 0 to 60 mph in around about 5.8 seconds. So its by no means a slouch as a mentioned, this one will do it in around about four. I still think away from the line youre going to be quicker than most things in the standard e Drive.
M Sport Version
There always has to be an M sport version. Of course, its BMW after all and itd be a bit weird if there wasnt one but against the two and having driven both here today. I think its that standard version, which just feels a little bit more comfortable a little bit more luxurious a little bit more. Like what youd expect from a standard, 5 series, plus remember, of course, that there is a touring version coming along both with petol and with electric powertrains, and I think thats going to be a pretty smart car.
No Diesel Engine
To be honest with you, its worth mentioning as well. That the I5 and the 5 series wont be offered with a diesel engine in this generation youre only going to be able to get it with petrol plug in hybrid and electric setups. The good news is, is that BMW says that theres no tradeoff with the plug hybrid, although lets be honest, BMW would say that.
Efficient Diesel Engine
But I do think it’s a bit of a shame that there isn’t a nice efficient diesel engine being offered with the Five series. Because that gives it that really long ability, which is why people go for a large, reasonably executive Saloon.
A True Five Series
In the first place, this electric version, though, most importantly, it does feel like a five series. And that’s something that I kind of thought when we drove it for its prototype, Drive. Seeing it here now in its fully production, ready version, it seems like it’s been carried through from that early prototype. And the dynamics that I really enjoyed when I first drove it are still there.
Retaining the BMW Feel
So, that’s the most important thing really. I think the most important factor to think about with the new i5 is that it feels like a BMW. And that’s a hard thing to achieve when you’re dealing with electric motors and a lack of sound, which can sometimes dial away the character of a car.
M60 vs. e Dynamics
This M60 version is the one to go for if you want out and out power. But in truth, I think the regular e Dynamics version is the one that I’d be leaning towards, because it’s got the best possible range and it’s still more than quick enough.
An Exciting Car
Overall, this is a very exciting car and one worth checking out. And remember, if you need a little bit more space, then the touring version is on its way soon.
Design
The 2023 BMW i5 is a car that demands attention. Its sleek and futuristic design is sure to turn heads wherever it goes. The iconic kidney grille is reimagined in a subtle, yet striking manner, seamlessly blending into the sleek body lines. The LED headlights give the i5 a distinctive look, while the aerodynamic side skirts and sculpted rear end contribute to its overall elegance. This all-electric saloon not only looks like a proper 5 Series, but it also sets itself apart from any old EV on the road.

In , the 2023 BMW i5 is a worthy addition to the BMW lineup. While the M Sport version may have some inconsistencies in finding its identity, the regular e Drive 4 version perfectly balances comfort and performance.
