The Exterior Design
The MG5, also known as the “mg5,” introduced a new concept to the electric car market – the electric estate car. With its practicality, decent range, and affordability, it quickly gained popularity among consumers. Now, let’s explore the updated 2023 model to see if it lives up to its reputation.
The first noticeable change in the exterior design is the completely revamped front end. It features a more angular design, deviating from the previous model’s resemblance to an old Volkswagen Passat. The rear lights, colors, and wheels have also been updated. However, despite these changes, the overall design remains somewhat awkward. The wheels appear too small, and attention to detail seems lacking, as seen in the proximity of the number plate to the badge.
The Interior Transformation
While style may not be the primary focus of the MG5, the interior has undergone a significant transformation. The previous model had a dated and cheap-feeling cabin, but the new model takes things to a whole new level of sophistication.
The interior of the updated MG5 is a delightful surprise. MG has replaced the old interior with something far more refined and luxurious. The materials used now exude quality and offer a more premium feel. The overall design and layout have been thoughtfully reimagined, enhancing the overall aesthetic appeal. From the well-crafted dashboard to the comfortable seating, every aspect of the interior has been upgraded.
Practicality and Functionality
One of the key strengths of the MG5 is its practicality, and the 2023 model continues to excel in this area. It offers ample interior space, making it suitable for families or those who require generous cargo capacity. The electric estate car aspect remains a standout feature, providing the versatility needed for various purposes.
The updated MG5 also offers a decent range, ensuring that users can enjoy longer journeys without the constant worry of running out of battery. This enhances its usability and makes it a reliable option for daily commuting or weekend getaways.
Value for Money
Affordability is one of the MG5’s greatest selling points, and the 2023 model maintains this advantage. MG has managed to incorporate various improvements while keeping the price reasonable. This makes the MG5 an attractive choice for budget-conscious consumers who still want a quality electric vehicle.
The MG5’s focus on providing the most bang for your buck is evident with its impressive features, updated interior, practicality, and competitive price. It offers a compelling package that appeals to those seeking an electric vehicle without breaking the bank.
In , the MG5 2023 model builds on the strengths of its predecessor, delivering an all-around brilliant electric vehicle. While the exterior design may still need some refinement, the interior transformation truly elevates the car to a higher level. With its practicality, decent range, and affordability, the MG5 continues to be a compelling option in the electric car market.
Design and Features
The first thing that catches your eye when you lay your eyes on the MG5 2023 is its modern and sleek design. With a touch screen placed in the center of the dashboard, it aligns perfectly with the contemporary aesthetics of today’s cars. The digital drivers display, measuring seven inches in size, is a great addition to the vehicle’s interior. The use of materials is commendable, with a nice texture running across the center of the dashboard. A metal look plastic adorns the center console and the top of the dash, complemented by subtle blue accents that add a touch of elegance. The overall interior feels well put together and exudes quality.
MG has made changes to the specifications of the MG5 for the 2023 model. The car now comes in two versions, namely the SE and the trophy. Even the entry-level SE model comes packed with a plethora of standard equipment. You can enjoy a spacious 10.25-inch infotainment screen, accompanied by a seven-inch digital drivers display. The addition of a new smartphone app allows you to conveniently control many of the car’s functions right from your phone. Furthermore, the car supports Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, catering to the needs of a wide range of smartphone users. One crucial upgrade in the new model is the inclusion of the MG Pilot safety pack, which features automatic emergency braking. This was lacking in the previous version and adds an extra layer of safety to the MG5.
Trophy Upgrade
For those looking for a slightly more premium experience, the MG5 trophy edition is worth considering. Priced slightly higher than the SE model, the trophy edition offers a host of additional features that make it stand out. The alloy wheels sport a different style, amplifying the car’s overall appearance. Privacy glass adds a touch of class and enhances the exclusivity factor. Automatic air conditioning ensures optimal comfort for all passengers, regardless of the weather outside. The 360-degree parking camera is a boon for city drivers, making parking maneuvers a breeze. To top it all off, the trophy edition comes with luxurious faux leather seats that are so well-designed, they almost feel like genuine leather.
In , the MG5 2023 is a brilliant electric vehicle that impresses on multiple fronts. Its modern design, well-integrated technology, and thoughtful features make it a compelling choice in the EV market. Whether you opt for the SE or the trophy edition, you’re guaranteed a car that not only looks good but also offers a comfortable and connected driving experience. MG has certainly upped its game with the latest version of the MG5, redefining what a brilliant electric vehicle can be. So, if you’re in the market for an EV that ticks all the right boxes, the MG5 2023 deserves serious consideration.
The Interior
The first thing that catches your eye when you step inside the MG5 2023 is the impressive imitation leather seats. They don’t feel like vinyl at all; in fact, they are a really good imitation of real leather. The touch screen, although not the most fancy or visually appealing, is of a nice size and is well positioned. It may not be the most responsive system, but it does get the job done. However, one downside is that some of the icons on the screen are quite small, especially the button to operate the standard heated seats in the Trophy model. This tiny button can be a bit challenging to operate while driving, as you have to take your eyes off the road.
The Interior Design and Functionality
Despite some of the minor drawbacks, the interior of the MG5 2023 is well made and spacious. There are plenty of storage compartments dotted around the cabin, which is always useful for keeping your belongings organized. In terms of functionality and technology, this model does not disappoint. It comes equipped with all the necessary options and features in MG’s own operating system. While it may not be the most advanced system out there, it gets the job done and offers everything you need. The overall design might be plain and lack any fancy elements, but it does not take away from the overall functionality and practicality of the car.
Practicality and Space
One of the strengths of the MG5 2023 is its practicality. The amount of space available in this car is impressive. Even with a couple of six footers sitting in the back, there is still enough legroom for everyone to be comfortable. The flat floor adds to the convenience and usability of the interior. However, it must be noted that the floor is slightly high, which can result in slightly elevated leg positioning. In terms of storage, the boot offers a generous 464 liters of space, which is more than enough for everyday needs. If you need additional space, simply fold down the rear seats, and the cargo capacity expands to a whopping 1456 liters. Whether you’re going on a road trip or simply need to transport some bulky items, the MG5 2023 has got you covered with its ample storage space.
In , the MG5 2023 proves to be a brilliant electric vehicle option. Although the touch screen interface may not be the most responsive and some of the icons are small, it is still functional and offers all the necessary options. The interior is well made and provides plenty of space and practicality. With its spacious cabin, generous boot space, and intelligent interior design, this car is perfect for those who value functionality and usability. Whether you’re commuting or embarking on a long journey, the MG5 2023 will not disappoint.
Driving Dynamics
If you’re someone who has nostalgic memories of MG sports cars from the 60s and 70s or perhaps you’re a unique individual like myself, who owns an MG from the early 2000s, then you might be disappointed with the current crop of MGs. These new models prioritize value for money rather than providing a thrilling driving experience. So, it’s crucial to adjust your expectations before you get behind the wheel. If you anticipate having the time of your life, prepare to be let down. However, if you approach it with the right mindset, there are still plenty of positive aspects to appreciate.
Facelift and Battery Upgrade
This particular review focuses on the MG5, which is a facelifted version of its predecessor. Mechanically, MG hasn’t made any significant changes. However, they have upgraded the battery, and the new MG5 comes with a larger battery pack, providing a longer range. The battery has a capacity of 61 kilowatt hours, but the usable capacity is 57 kilowatt hours. According to the manufacturer’s claim, it offers a range of 250 miles. During the filming of this review in early February, with temperatures hovering around 10 degrees Celsius, the car was charged overnight and displayed a range of 211 miles. It’s worth noting that real-world efficiency may vary, making these figures somewhat subjective.
Efficiency and Range
In terms of efficiency, the MG5 has been delivering a commendable performance. On average, it has been achieving between 3 and 3.5 miles per kilowatt hour. Considering its price range and the fact that it’s an electric vehicle, these figures are quite impressive. So, if you’re looking for a car that offers a cost-effective driving experience without compromising on range, the MG5 proves to be a practical choice.
Ride Comfort and Handling
While the MG5 might not be a thrilling ride, it does excel in providing a comfortable driving experience. The suspension is softly sprung, contributing to a smooth and gentle ride. Additionally, if you opt for the trophy model, you’ll be treated to 17-inch alloy wheels, which further enhance the comfort and aesthetics of the vehicle. So, if your priorities revolve around a smooth and comfortable journey rather than a sporty performance, the MG5 ticks the right boxes.
Note: The following content is just a continuation of the last paragraph mentioned above.
Interior and Features
Moving inside the MG5, you’ll find a well-appointed interior with a range of features that offer convenience and comfort. The cabin is spacious, providing ample legroom and headroom for both the front and rear passengers. The seats are supportive and comfortable, making long drives a pleasure rather than a chore. Moreover, the infotainment system is user-friendly and responsive, adding to the overall enjoyment of the driving experience.
The MG5’s Ride and Driving Experience
The MG5 has a slightly firmer ride compared to its predecessor, the old MG5 with 16-inch alloy wheels. However, the difference is so negligible that you would have to drive these cars back to back to notice it. Despite this, the car offers a pleasant and relaxed driving experience, thanks to its softly sprung suspension.
One aspect that I’m not particularly fond of is the sound of the indicator, which comes across as cheap. However, apart from that, the overall driving experience is satisfactory. The steering is fairly accurate and surprisingly light. Although this lightness is to be expected, you have the option to switch to sport mode, which increases the steering weight and sharpens the throttle response.
The Unique Driving Mode System
Now, let’s discuss the unique driving mode system in the MG5. Unlike most other vehicles with a drive mode switch, the MG5 has a lever called “Curves” that functions as a Formula One-style kinetic energy recovery system. This lever allows you to switch between different driving modes and also affects the steering and throttle response.
In Comfort mode, which is what we are currently in, the brake regeneration is set to level two. There are three levels of brake regeneration in total. Switching to Sport mode reduces the brake regeneration to level one, while Eco mode cranks it up to level three. The brake regeneration in the MG5 is quite strong, although it doesn’t offer true one-pedal driving. Nevertheless, it does a great job of maximizing your range and helping you conserve energy.
The Normal Sound of an Electric Motor
As with most electric vehicles, you can expect to hear a slight whine from the motor while driving the MG5. This is completely normal and is part of electric motors’ characteristic sound. However, the noise level is not excessive and shouldn’t be a cause for concern.

Value for Money and Uniqueness
The MG5 continues to be an electric car that offers exceptional value for money. In fact, it is still the only electric state car available on the market, with the exception of the Porsche Taikan Sport Turismo. This uniqueness gives the MG5 an edge, allowing it to cater to a specific niche of car buyers.
Improvements in the Right Areas
While it remains the only electric estate car on sale, the MG5 has taken steps to improve in the areas that needed attention. The manufacturers have not compromised on the aspects that were already working well, ensuring a seamless transition for existing MG5 owners. By focusing on targeted enhancements, they have successfully refined the overall driving experience.
Affordability and Competitive Pricing
One of the standout features of the MG5 is its commitment to keeping prices low. Despite the improvements and upgrades, they have managed to maintain the affordability factor, making it an attractive option for budget-conscious buyers. It offers the most practicality and range for the least amount of money, setting itself apart from its competitors.
In , the MG5 might not offer the same level of excitement and dynamism as the older models of MG sports cars.
