Electric Range and Efficiency
The Honda e:Ny1 boasts a larger battery pack than its predecessor, the Honda e, with a capacity of 68.8 kWh. According to the manufacturer’s claims, this should provide a range of 256 miles on the WLTP test cycle. However, during my own mixed driving test, I was only able to achieve between 180 to 200 miles. This falls short of expectations, especially considering the price of this electric SUV.
When compared to its competitors, the Honda e:Ny1 lags behind in terms of mileage. It is disappointing to see that Honda missed the opportunity to offer an extended range option for their customers. While the ability to recover energy and maximize efficiency is present, it doesn’t make up for the limited range that the vehicle offers.
Driving Experience
Despite its shortcomings in terms of electric range, the Honda e:Ny1 does offer a pleasant driving experience. The electric motor delivers smooth acceleration, providing a quiet and comfortable ride. The handling is agile, making it easy to navigate through city streets and tight corners. The regenerative braking system works well, allowing for one-pedal driving in certain situations.
The interior of the Honda e:Ny1 is well-designed and showcases a modern and minimalist aesthetic. The touchscreen display is intuitive and responsive, offering access to various vehicle functions. The seats are comfortable and supportive, making long drives enjoyable.
Charging Capabilities
One of the advantages of the Honda e:Ny1 is its fast charging capabilities. With a DC fast charger, the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in approximately 30 minutes. This is a convenient feature, especially for those who frequently rely on public charging stations. However, it is worth noting that the availability of fast chargers may vary depending on your location.
Regenerative Braking and Flappy Paddle
When it comes to driving the Honda e:Ny1, one of the standout features is the regenerative braking system. As you navigate the streets, you have the option to utilize the flappy paddle located on the left. By using this paddle, you can control the degree of regenerative braking, which is displayed through arrows on the instrument cluster.
Coasting vs One-Pedal Drive
While the regenerative braking system is impressive, it is unfortunate that the Honda e:Ny1 does not offer a one-pedal drive feature. In today’s modern age of electric SUVs, this addition would have been greatly appreciated. What is one-pedal drive and why is it important? Essentially, it allows the vehicle to come to a complete standstill when you lift off the accelerator pedal, making inner city commutes much smoother. However, with the e:Ny1, even in its harshest regenerative braking mode, you still need to rely on the physical brake pedal.
Front Charge Ports
When it’s time to recharge the Honda e:Ny1, you’ll find the charge ports conveniently located at the front of the vehicle. Similar to the Honda e, there are both CCS and Type2 ports available. However, it is disappointing to note that the CCS port is limited to a maximum of 78 kW.
Despite these shortcomings, the Honda e:Ny1 still offers an enjoyable driving experience. Its regenerative braking system provides a level of control and efficiency, even if it doesn’t offer the convenience of one-pedal drive. And while the charging capabilities may not be groundbreaking, they are still more than sufficient for most daily needs.
So, was it worth the wait for the Honda e:Ny1? That ultimately depends on your priorities as a driver. If you value a smooth inner city commute and the convenience of one-pedal driving, you may find the e:Ny1 lacking. However, if you prioritize control and efficiency, along with a stylish and comfortable ride, the e:Ny1 could still be a great choice for you.
Having waited anxiously for the arrival of the Honda e:Ny1, I must admit that my excitement was tinged with a hint of skepticism. After all, many of its competitors boast charging capabilities well above 100 KW, and I wondered if Honda could keep up. However, I was pleasantly surprised by the results.
The Honda e:Ny1 claims to offer a 10 to 80 charge in approximately 45 minutes, which is decent but not exceptional. Most of its competitors can achieve this in less than 30 minutes. However, if you primarily charge at home using an AC charge point, you’ll be relieved to know that the vehicle comes equipped with an 11 KW onboard charger. This means that you can go from 10 to 80 percent charge in a comfortable 6 hours. But if you’re relying on a regular 7 KW wallbox, expect the charging time to increase significantly to around 9 to 10 hours. And if you’re using a standard three-pin input, well, you’ll have to be exceedingly patient as the charging time will be much, much longer.
Now that we’ve covered the charging aspect, let’s delve into the driving experience. First and foremost, I must mention the performance of the Honda e:Ny1. It is equipped with a front-mounted electric motor that, when combined with its 68.8 KW battery pack, generates an impressive 150 KW of power or 201 horsepower and 310 Newton meters of torque. To put it to the test, I had the opportunity to use a race logic performance box, and the results were quite impressive.
From a standstill, the Honda e:Ny1 can go from 0 to 20 mph in a mere 2 seconds, 0 to 30 mph in just 3 seconds, and 0 to 60 mph in a respectable 6.99 seconds. Additionally, it boasts a 50 to 70 mph acceleration time of 3 seconds. These figures demonstrate that the Honda e:Ny1 possesses commendable performance capabilities that can rival its competitors.
Moving on to the overall driving experience, I found the Honda e:Ny1 to be a delight. Its compact size and nimble handling make maneuvering through urban environments an absolute breeze. The regenerative braking system further enhances the driving experience by providing a seamless transition between acceleration and deceleration.
Inside the cabin, the Honda e:Ny1 exudes a sense of modernity and sophistication. The infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly, featuring a touchscreen display that seamlessly integrates with your smartphone. The seating is comfortable, and the materials used are of high quality, lending a premium feel to the overall interior design.
One aspect where the Honda e:Ny1 truly shines is its range. With a fully charged battery, it boasts an impressive range of over 200 miles, making it an ideal choice for daily commuting and even longer journeys without the constant need for recharging.
In , the Honda e:Ny1 has proven itself to be a worthy contender in the electric vehicle market. While its charging capabilities may not be the fastest, its performance, handling, and range make up for it. If you’re in the market for a stylish and capable electric vehicle, the Honda e:Ny1 is definitely worth considering.
Performance and Speed
The Honda e:Ny1 is a vehicle that promises impressive numbers in terms of its performance. With a 0-60mph time of just 94 seconds, it certainly has the potential to give you an exhilarating driving experience. Additionally, it boasts a gForce of 0.52, which further adds to the excitement.
However, when it comes to top speed, the e:Ny1 falls a bit short. With a limit of 99 mph, it may not be able to satisfy those looking for a vehicle that can truly push the boundaries. While this might disappoint some, it is important to remember that the e:Ny1 is targeted towards a specific market, and for everyday driving, this speed should suffice.
Torque Steer Issues
One aspect that might disappoint potential buyers is the presence of torque steer in the e:Ny1. Torque steer refers to the phenomenon where the front wheels spin excessively when power is applied, leading to a lack of traction. This can be especially noticeable when accelerating out of a bend or when driving on wet surfaces.
Interestingly, torque steer is a problem that is not exclusive to the e:Ny1. Even some of its competitors, such as the Hyundai Kona electric, suffer from this issue despite being front-wheel drive vehicles. However, it is worth mentioning that considering the e:Ny1’s rear-wheel drive configuration, it is a bit surprising to see such a problem persist.
Driver Experience
One area where the e:Ny1 falls short compared to its smaller sibling, the Honda e, is the overall driver experience. The e:Ny1 feels somewhat disconnected and disjointed, lacking the same level of connection with the front axle. This can be particularly noticeable when cornering, especially on winding country roads.
The front-wheel drive configuration of the e:Ny1 is to blame for this lack of confidence and connection. Unlike rear-wheel drive vehicles, front-wheel drive tends to offer less stability and precision when navigating corners. While this might not be a dealbreaker for some, it is worth considering if you prioritize a more engaging driving experience.
In , the Honda e:Ny1 is a vehicle that offers impressive performance and speed, but it does come with its fair share of drawbacks. The presence of torque steer and the somewhat disjointed driver experience might leave some potential buyers questioning whether it was worth the wait. However, for those in the target market who prioritize everyday driving and are not too concerned about pushing the limits, the e:Ny1 could still be a viable option.
Performance and Handling
It would have been great to see Honda integrate a rear-wheel drive or an all-wheel drive configuration in the Honda e:Ny1 to compete with its competitors and attract more customers. Unfortunately, this is not the case, and it is a bit disappointing. Similar comments were made about its competitor, the smart hash, which isn’t as stiff as the mgzs but also not as comfortable as the likes of the VW id4 or id5, Hyundai ionic 5, Conor electric, Kia Eero, Nero EV, Kia ev6, Subaru sutera, Toyota bz 4X, or even the citrus ec4 and EC 4X, which offer a more advanced suspension system. The Honda e:Ny1 falls short in terms of comfort, especially when navigating city streets.
Interior Design and Features
When it comes to the interior of the Honda e:Ny1, there are some noteworthy features. The synthetic leather upholstery and genuine leather steering wheel give a luxurious and stylish feel. However, they don’t necessarily stand out compared to the offerings of more expensive rivals in the market. While the interior design is pleasing, it doesn’t offer any unique or standout features that set it apart from the competition.
Infotainment and Technology
The Honda e:Ny1 does come equipped with decent infotainment and technology. The touchscreen display is responsive and easy to navigate, providing access to various entertainment and connectivity options. However, it lacks some of the more advanced features found in its competitors, such as the Citrus ec4 and the EC 4X. These models offer seamless integration and an enhanced user experience, allowing drivers to effortlessly glide over speed bumps and other irregularities on the road.
The Infotainment System
The Honda e:Ny1 comes with a unique infotainment system that sets it apart from other vehicles. The vertical 15.1-inch display is split into three separate parts. However, unlike other systems, these parts cannot be combined as of now.
At the top of the display, you have your satnav and clock. Below that is the infotainment system, which is similar to what you would find on other Honda vehicles. And below the infotainment system, there are dedicated climate controls.
While it’s nice to see a large area for the climate controls, it would have been better if there were physical controls, like the ones found on the HRV. Unfortunately, the manufacturer has chosen to go with a digital route.
Personally, I’m not too fond of the separate blocks in the display. It would have been great to have a larger display for the satnav or media playback, rather than having them split into separate parts. This makes certain parts of the display seem a bit redundant.
The system supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, which can be connected through a wired connection. However, one interesting feature is that CarPlay is also supported wirelessly, providing even more convenience to the driver.
The Secondary Display
In addition to the infotainment system, the Honda e:Ny1 also comes with a secondary 10.25-inch display in the form of the instrument cluster. This display provides all the key driving information and indicates the operation of the safety systems.
While it would have been great to see a higher degree of customization for the instrument cluster, I have no real complaints. The display serves its purpose well and provides the necessary information for a smooth driving experience.
In , the Honda e:Ny1 offers a unique infotainment system that is both functional and modern. While there are some aspects of the system that could be improved, such as combining the separate blocks in the display, overall it provides a satisfactory user experience. With its support for Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, as well as wireless CarPlay connectivity, the e:Ny1 keeps up with the latest technologies in the automotive world.
Lack of Head Up Display
One small disappointment with the Honda e:Ny1 is the absence of a head up display. It would have been great to see this feature either as standard in the advanced trim or as an optional add-on for customers. Unfortunately, that’s not the case.
No Bose Audio System
Another surprising omission is the lack of a Bose audio system in the advanced trim. This is quite baffling, considering that other Honda vehicles offer this premium sound system. Looking at the spec sheet, both the elegance and advanced trims only list six speakers. However, upon closer inspection, the Advanced trim does include a subwoofer in the boot, resulting in a total of seven speakers or what the manufacturer claims to be a premium audio system. In contrast, the Elegance trim only has six speakers.
Disappointing Sound Quality
Unfortunately, the audio system in the advanced trim left me feeling a bit disheartened. It pales in comparison to the Bose audio system found in other Honda models like the HRV or the Civic. It’s quite a shame that the manufacturer has decided to do away with Bose altogether. Hopefully, they will rectify this in future spec sheets.
Missing Magic Seats
One notable change in the Honda e:Ny1 is the absence of the beloved magic seats. For those unfamiliar with this feature, the magic seats in previous Honda models allowed for versatile seating arrangements and easy cargo loading. It’s a bit disappointing to see that this functionality has been removed.
Storage and Design
The Honda e:Ny1, unfortunately, lacks the rear seat lifting feature that was present in its predecessors like the HRV and Jazz. This omission might not be a dealbreaker for most consumers, but for those who appreciated the larger storage area it provided, it’s a disappointment. Additionally, the rear cup holders still have a floppy design, which feels out of place in a car that aims to be premium. However, there are still ample storage compartments in the rear, including at the rear portion of the front seats, door bins, and a small area behind the center console.
Charging and Connectivity
In terms of charging and connectivity, the Honda e:Ny1 offers convenient features. At the front of the cabin, there’s a wireless smartphone charger that comes standard across all trim ranges. It is accompanied by a USB type A and type C port, as well as a 12V socket located further down the center console. This setup ensures that you can easily charge your devices on the go. Additionally, there are two cup holders for added convenience, along with a small area within the center armrest that can accommodate a small purse or a wallet.
Performance and Driving Experience
The Honda e:Ny1 delivers a satisfactory performance and driving experience. The electric motor provides ample power, allowing for smooth acceleration and overtaking on the road. The handling is responsive, and the car feels agile, making it suitable for navigating through traffic and tight city streets. The regenerative braking system is also effective, helping to maximize range and ensure a more efficient driving experience.
Range and Charging Efficiency
The range of the Honda e:Ny1 is decent, with enough mileage to cover most daily commutes. However, it falls short compared to some of its competitors in the same price range. Charging efficiency is respectable, with the battery able to charge to a satisfactory level within a reasonable amount of time. Overall, the range and charging capabilities of the Honda e:Ny1 are adequate for typical urban use, but may not be optimal for longer journeys or extensive travel.
Interior Comfort and Technology Features
Inside the cabin, the Honda e:Ny1 offers a comfortable and modern environment. The seats are supportive and well-cushioned, ensuring a pleasant ride even on longer journeys. The infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly, with a responsive touchscreen interface. Additionally, the car is equipped with advanced safety features such as lane departure warning and adaptive cruise control, enhancing the overall driving experience and providing peace of mind.
Storage Capacity
Now, of course, you have got the glove box and you have got the front door bins which will accommodate a 500ml bottle alongside some small size valuables. It would have been further appreciated if they were lined in sort of fabric material, because it would have prevented any sort of loose change or keys from rattling around when you are traversing uneven terrain.
Of course, when it comes to storage, we have to talk about its boots and here it’s great to see that you have got that hatchback design. There is also a power tailgate in the advanced trim. Now, when it comes to the overall storage capacity, you’ve got 344 up to 361 L and, with the seats propped down, you’ve got 1136 L up to 1176 L. This is depending on the certain trim level that you’ll go for. Now, while the overall storage isn’t exactly class-leading specifically, if you compare it to larger size SUVs, it should certainly suffice for most consumers doing their weekly shops. Furthermore, it’s great to see that you’ve actually got a sizable underfloor compartment, which will be a great place for storing your charging cables, because at the front of the vehicle there is no extra storage compartment. So indeed, there is no sort of frunk, despite it being a fully electric vehicle elsewhere. I would like to point out that you do have a completely flat loading bay, although there are only 60/40 rear split-folding seats and therefore you do not have an integrated ski latch.
Seat and Comfort
Moving swiftly on, let’s talk about seat and comfort and here it’s a non-issue.
Cabin Comfort and Space
The Honda e:Ny1 offers a comfortable and accommodating cabin for both front and rear passengers. The seats are soft and designed to provide a pleasant seating experience. However, it’s worth noting that the rear seats are slightly diagonally wedged, a feature common to many electric SUVs. This design may cause some fatigue in the thigh or quad muscles, particularly during longer journeys.
One area where the Honda e:Ny1 shines is in legroom optimization. The absence of a transmission tunnel allows for ample legroom, enhancing passenger comfort. However, the same cannot be said for headroom, especially for those seated in the middle rear seat. Even individuals who are just under 6 feet tall may find headroom quite limited.
Interior Features
Moving on to the front of the cabin, the Honda e:Ny1 offers convenient features for the driver. The driver’s seat comes with heated eight-way electronic controls, allowing for personalized comfort. The passenger, on the other hand, has manual controls for their seat adjustments. It’s important to note that there are no height adjustments available.
In terms of additional features, the advanced trim of the Honda e:Ny1 boasts a heated steering wheel and a panoramic glass roof. The heated steering wheel provides comfort during colder weather, while the panoramic glass roof allows for an abundance of natural light to enter the cabin, creating a pleasant and airy atmosphere.
Exterior Design
The exterior design of the Honda e:Ny1 draws inspiration from the Honda HRV. However, it possesses a refined and adorable appearance. At the front, you’ll notice a covered grill, a unique feature of fully electric vehicles. This design element contributes to a cohesive and unified look. The headlights seamlessly integrate with the bonnet, giving the vehicle a sleek and modern appearance.
As for the vehicle’s side profile, it would have been ideal to see body-colored wheel arches and side skirts. Unfortunately, these features don’t protrude much from the exterior profile. Nevertheless, the overall design of the Honda e:Ny1 is eye-catching and visually appealing.
While the Honda e:Ny1 has its strengths in terms of cabin comfort, interior features, and exterior design, it’s important to consider the overall package and its performance on the road. With its unique characteristics and electric capabilities, the Honda e:Ny1 is a vehicle that demands attention.
Exterior Design and Customization
The Honda e:Ny1 boasts an impressive exterior design that is sure to turn heads on the road. With 18-inch alloys as standard, the vehicle exudes a sense of sophistication and style. However, if you desire a different look, you can opt for alternative styled 18-inch alloys at an added cost ranging from $1420 to $1460.
Moving to the rear profile of the car, you will notice an integrated spoiler that adds a touch of sportiness. Additionally, the tail light design stretches across the entire width of the vehicle, featuring the iconic Honda logo. While not revolutionary, this design element distinguishes the e:Ny1 from other Honda models.
When it comes to color options, the e:Ny1 comes in black as the standard choice. However, for an extra $650, you can opt for a striking red, gray, white, or the eye-catching blue finish showcased in the pictures. This additional cost is reasonable considering the enhancement it brings to the overall design of the vehicle.
Safety Features
While the e:Ny1 has not yet been tested by Euro NCAP at the time of this review, it comes equipped with an array of standard driver assistance systems. These systems provide peace of mind and contribute to a safer driving experience.
The adaptive cruise control is particularly impressive, functioning effectively to maintain a safe distance from the vehicle ahead. Paired with the intelligent speed limiter and traffic sign recognition, the e:Ny1 assists in ensuring that you adhere to speed limits and follow road signs accurately.
Other safety features include lane departure warning, lane keep assist, brake assist, collision mitigation braking system, forward collision warning, leading car departure, road departure mitigation, low-speed following, and traffic jam assist. All of these features contribute to the overall safety and reliability of the e:Ny1.
Design and Features
The Honda e:Ny1 comes packed with an array of features that are available as standard in both the elegance and the advanced trims. This is definitely a positive aspect of the vehicle. However, one drawback is the lack of a way to disable the constant notifications and warnings that come through the instrument cluster. This is a recurring issue even in other Honda models like the CRV. It would have been great to see this addressed in the en1.
Assistance and Safety
The Honda e:Ny1 offers rear cameras, front and rear parking sensors across all trim ranges. This is a great addition to ensure better visibility and safety while parking. In the advanced trim, there are additional lateral sensors and a multi-view camera system with parking pilot. These features further enhance the vehicle’s safety measures. However, one downside is the inability to fully disable the plethora of driver assistance systems. While they are appreciated, they can become quite annoying when you can’t turn them off entirely.
Maneuverability
The Honda e:Ny1 boasts an impressive 11.6 M turning circle, making it incredibly easy to maneuver. This feature adds to the overall convenience and practicality of the vehicle. Its great maneuverability is certainly a positive point to consider for potential buyers.
Competition and Verdict
Unfortunately, when compared to its competitors, the Honda e:Ny1 fails to stand out. It lacks class-leading electric range, driving dynamics, performance, and overall driving comfort due to its suspension setup. While the presence of various driver assistance systems is appreciated, the inability to fully disable them can be quite bothersome. The technology within the cabin could also have been more optimized, particularly in terms of rear occupancy space and boot capacity. However, for a small-size electric SUV, the boot capacity is not too bad.
In , the Honda e:Ny1 does have its share of positive aspects such as its design, standard features, and maneuverability. However, it falls short in comparison to its competitors in terms of performance, driving comfort, and technology optimization. Potential buyers should consider these factors before making a decision.
Size Matters
If you’re looking for a spacious ride, the Honda e:Ny1 might not be your best bet. This compact electric SUV may not offer the same level of interior space as some of its larger counterparts. However, keep in mind that size does have its advantages, especially when it comes to maneuverability and ease of parking in tight spaces.
An Array of Alternatives
If the lack of space is a dealbreaker for you, fear not! There are plenty of alternatives in the world of electric SUVs that might better suit your needs. These larger vehicles provide extra room for both passengers and cargo, making them a practical choice for families or those who frequently haul around larger items. Check out some of the options I’ve reviewed in the description below and see if they catch your interest.

In , the Honda e:Ny1 has its pros and cons. While it offers a pleasant driving experience and convenient fast charging capabilities, its limited electric range is a major drawback. Considering its price, it falls short in comparison to other electric SUVs on the market. However, for those who prioritize style and design, the Honda e:Ny1 may still be an appealing option.
Overall, the Honda e:Ny1 falls short in some areas compared to its competitors. While it has a stylish interior with synthetic leather upholstery and a genuine leather steering wheel, it doesn’t offer any standout features or advanced technology. Its suspension system is also not as comfortable as some of its rivals, which may be a drawback for city driving. However, it’s important to consider personal preferences and priorities when choosing an electric SUV, as different drivers have different needs and preferences. Ultimately, the decision of whether the Honda e:Ny1 is worth the wait depends on individual expectations and requirements.
Overall, the Honda e:Ny1 has some notable drawbacks, such as the lack of a head up display and a premium audio system. The omission of the magic seats is also a disappointment. However, it’s important to consider the other aspects of the vehicle, such as its electric range and driving performance. The Honda e:Ny1 may still be worth considering for those who prioritize eco-friendly transportation and enjoy the unique design and features it offers.
The Honda e:Ny1 is a solid electric car that offers decent performance, a comfortable interior, and convenient features. However, its lack of rear seat lifting and floppy cup holders detract from its premium appeal. While the range and charging efficiency are satisfactory for daily use, they may not meet the needs of those who frequently embark on long trips. Overall, the Honda e:Ny1 is a worthy contender in the electric car market, but it may not be the top choice for those seeking a truly exceptional driving experience.
The Honda e:Ny1 has certainly lived up to the anticipation surrounding its release. From its sleek exterior design to its comprehensive safety features, this electric vehicle offers a compelling package for those seeking style and reliability in their daily commutes. With the option to customize the alloys and choose from a range of eye-catching colors, the e:Ny1 allows for a personal touch.
