The 2024 Porsche Macan EV: Testing its Highway Range
The 2024 Porsche Macan EV is the German automaker’s second venture into the electric vehicle market. Today, we will explore just how far this impressive SUV can go on the highway. However, this range test might differ slightly from the standard Edmunds EV test, as we have no knowledge of the vehicle’s estimated range. During prototype drives, things can be fluid, and Porsche has requested that we refrain from mentioning specific trim level names. Therefore, throughout this article, we will refer to them as “top trim level” and “bottom trim level.”
The Power of the Macan EV Top Trim Level
In this range test, we will be focusing on the Macan EV top trim level, which boasts over 600 horsepower. Unfortunately, Porsche has not provided an EPA estimate for the vehicle’s range. Our plan is simple: drive on the highway at a steady speed of 70 miles per hour and observe how far we can go before returning to our starting point. While this methodology differs from the Edmunds approach, which combines city and highway driving in a precise mix, it should offer valuable insights into the Macan EV’s capabilities.
Unveiling the Macan EV’s Range
As we hit the highway, the Macan EV effortlessly merges into traffic, showcasing its powerful acceleration. The car’s electric motor silently propels it forward, creating a surreal driving experience. With each passing mile, we can’t help but wonder how much juice the battery has left. Will it exceed our expectations or fall short?
The Macan EV’s range remains shrouded in mystery as we continue our journey. Its dynamic regenerative braking system efficiently captures energy while decelerating, potentially extending its range. However, without an official EPA estimate, we can only rely on our observations to assess its capabilities.
A Journey of Discovery
As time passes, the Macan EV demonstrates its impressive endurance. The battery charge level decreases gradually but steadily. However, we can’t shake the uncertainty of how much farther it can go. The lack of a definitive range estimate keeps us on edge throughout the journey.
The Macan EV’s interior features luxurious materials and cutting-edge technology, immersing us in a world of comfort and innovation. Yet, our focus remains fixed on the road ahead, eagerly awaiting the moment when the battery finally reaches its limit.
The Ultimate Test
After an exhilarating drive, we arrive back at our starting point. The Macan EV has completed its highway journey, but questions still linger. How far did it go? Did it live up to our expectations?
Without an EPA estimate or the precise methodology used in the Edmunds test, we may not have an official range figure. However, this range test has provided valuable insights into the Macan EV’s potential. While the mystery surrounding its range may perplex us, one thing is certain: Porsche has crafted a powerful and enduring electric SUV that excels on the open road.
Porsche Macan EV Highway Range Test
The Porsche Macan EV is the company’s first electric SUV, and we had the opportunity to put it to the test on a highway range test. With its closest analog being the Porsche Taycan GTS, which achieved about 260 miles in our previous test, we were expecting the Macan EV to perform impressively as well.
Challenging Test Conditions
Unlike the gentle Edmunds EV range test, our test involved higher speeds on the highway, which can put more strain on the range. This meant the Macan EV had to face a tougher challenge, but we were still hopeful for an impressive showing of around 250 miles.
Impressive Performance SUV
Considering that performance SUVs like the Kia EV6 GT tend to have lower mileage figures, achieving anywhere near 250 miles would be a remarkable feat for the Macan EV. These high-performance vehicles often have powerful motors that consume more energy, resulting in lower efficiency.
The Route
Our route for the day took us from the hotel directly onto the highway, heading east until we reached about half of the Macan EV’s range. We then turned around and headed back. The weather conditions were ideal, with temperatures ranging from the mid 60s to low 70s and minimal wind.
Favorable Weather
Even the iconic windmills near Palm Springs were barely turning during our test, indicating the minimal wind disturbance. These favorable weather conditions provided an optimal environment for the Macan EV to demonstrate its range capabilities.
The Results
Despite the challenging high-speed conditions, the Porsche Macan EV exceeded our expectations. It showcased an impressive range, surpassing the 250-mile mark. This achievement is a testament to Porsche’s engineering prowess and their commitment to delivering high-performance electric vehicles with exceptional range.
The Future of Porsche EVs
The successful highway range test of the Macan EV gives us a glimpse into the future of Porsche’s electric vehicle lineup. As technology continues to advance, we can expect even greater performance and range capabilities from upcoming Porsche EVs.
Porsche Macan EV: Behind the Wheels of Porsche’s First Electric SUV
This is a prototype version of the Macan EV, which internally Porsche just refers to as the Macan. But we’re going to keep calling it the Macan EV. For now. Just for clarity. That means much of the exterior was covered up, as you could see, and the interior wasn’t fully finished, though Porsche assured us that none of the extra cladding on the outside would affect the vehicle’s aerodynamics and therefore its range.
The PPE Platform and Impressive Range
The PPE platform that the Macan EV rides on also comes with a larger battery than the Taycan, offering a 100 kilowatt lithium-ion battery that comes with impressively fast charging times at speeds up to 270 kilowatts. This means the battery can be charged from 10% to 80% in just over 20 minutes, making it one of the fastest-charging electric vehicles on the market. We are particularly eager to test it ourselves and see where this vehicle ends up on the Edmunds EV fast charging leaderboard.
Aerodynamics and Efficiency
Despite the Macan EV’s larger size and greater weight compared to the Taycan, it has a one-speed transmission, unlike the Taycan’s two-speed transmission. This transmission choice, coupled with Porsche’s expertise in aerodynamics, suggests that the Macan EV may still be efficient on the highway. However, due to these factors, I wasn’t too optimistic about the Macan EV’s potential range during this particular test.
Driving Impressions
Unfortunately, Porsche stipulated that we could not talk about any driving impressions from this experience whatsoever. Our focus is solely on the range part of the story. While I would love to share what it’s like to drive this Macan EV in its top trim level, I can only say that sitting behind the wheel evokes a feeling of awe and anticipation.

The Journey Begins
Along for the ride with me were Calvin from Porsche PR and Sebastian from Germany who handled the route. As we set off on our journey, we decided to set the climate control at 72 degrees on Auto, a common practice for the Edmunds EV range test. However, with three grown men in the car, it quickly started to get quite stuffy, so we had to forgo using eco climate control.
The Most Efficient Drive Mode
To ensure the best aerodynamics and efficiency, we drove in the normal drive mode, as recommended by Porsche. We also set the air suspension to its lowest height. This combination was expected to provide the most efficient performance for our test.
Unprecedented Range
Throughout the journey, we kept a close eye on the vehicle’s range. To our surprise, the Macan EV’s range figure kept holding up, and it just kept going and going and going. It was a truly remarkable display of endurance. In fact, we were so amazed by its performance that we had to change our original route and go further down the highway.
A Hill to Conquer
The route out from our starting point included climbing up a fairly long grade. Despite the uphill challenge, we were hopeful that we would regain some range back on the way down the hill. With the battery level just under 50%, we decided to flip around and head back to the hotel.
A Successful Finish
As we anticipated, the Macan EV made it back to the starting point with miles to spare. The remarkable performance of the vehicle allowed us to cover a total distance of 298 miles, with 7 miles of range still remaining in reserve. This impressive figure of 305 miles is truly commendable, especially considering the one speed transmission and our average speed of 61 miles per hour throughout the journey.

End Consumption Figure
According to the trip computer, our end consumption figure was 30.6 kilowatt hours per 100 miles. However, it is difficult to verify this figure without knowing the exact amount of energy required to fully recharge the battery.
Comparison with Another Model
During our test drive, we encountered another team driving a Macan EV with a bottom trim level. This version of the SUV is less powerful, but also more efficient due to its smaller and more efficient wheels and tires. This other vehicle managed to cover 325 miles on the same route. It is anticipated that this version of the Macan EV will rank high on the Edmunds EV range leaderboard when tested.
Recharging
Back at the hotel, the Macan EV was in need of a well-deserved recharge after covering 305 highway miles. The performance of the vehicle is truly impressive, especially considering the power and performance it offers. However, I am unable to provide specific details about this performance at the moment.
