The Design
The Volvo EX30 certainly catches the eye with its sleek and stylish design. Even though it is the smallest SUV in Volvo’s lineup, it still manages to exude a sense of sophistication. The car’s compact size is perfect for navigating city streets, while its refined appearance adds a touch of elegance.
The Price Tag
One of the most impressive aspects of the Volvo EX30 is its affordability. With a starting price of around $31,000, it is significantly cheaper than its competitors. This makes it an attractive option for those looking for a premium car without breaking the bank. In fact, it even undercuts the popular Voxal Mocka by more than $5,000 and is cheaper than a mid-range Voxall Corser. Such a price difference is truly astonishing.
The Interior
Stepping inside the Volvo EX30, you are greeted with a well-designed and comfortable interior. The attention to detail is evident, with high-quality materials and a minimalist aesthetic. The seats are supportive and plush, making long drives a breeze. Additionally, the smart layout of the dashboard and controls ensures that everything is within easy reach for the driver.
The Driving Experience
Now, onto the most exciting part the driving experience. As I take the Volvo EX30 for a spin through the winding mountain roads above Barcelona, I can’t help but be impressed by its performance. The electric motor provides instant acceleration and a smooth, quiet ride. The handling is precise, and the car feels stable and composed even during sharp turns. It truly lives up to its reputation as a small electric car.
The Spacious Interior
The Volvo EX30 boasts a surprisingly spacious interior, as demonstrated by the fact that it can comfortably fit all the luggage from a recent trip to the airport. This small electric car may appear compact on the outside, but once you step inside, you’ll be amazed at the amount of room it offers. It’s safe to say that Volvo has utilized every inch of available space efficiently.
A Clever Design
One of the standout features of the EX30 is its cleverly designed floor. It can be adjusted to create a higher raised floor or a lower load, depending on your needs. This flexibility allows for easy transportation of both large and small items. The raised floor also helps to minimize the lip, making it effortless to load and unload your belongings.
A Game of Fit
Inside the EX30, you’ll find a little graphic display that adds a playful touch to the car. It asks the question, “Will it fit?” and invites you to test the car’s storage capacity. From prams to luggage to even a mysterious-looking tent that may resemble a martian, the EX30 passes the test with flying colors. It’s a fun and interactive way to showcase the car’s versatility.
Perfect for Adventurers
If you’re someone who loves the great outdoors, the EX30 has you covered. With enough space to accommodate sports equipment like golf clubs and even a versatile lamp, this car is ready to accompany you on all your adventures. Whether you’re heading to the countryside or going camping, the EX30 proves that it is not just a car, but a companion for your active lifestyle.
Jinny-Approved
For those familiar with the popular “will it fit” videos, you’ll be pleased to know that the EX30 has been put to the test. And the verdict? It fits the beloved jinny, proving that this small electric car can accommodate not only everyday items but also furry friends. The spacious boot offers a comfortable space for both human and pet passengers.
With its spacious interior, clever design, and ability to accommodate a wide range of items, the Volvo EX30 certainly sets itself apart from its competitors. But is it the best small electric car in the world? Only time will tell. However, one thing is for sure – the EX30 is a strong contender in the ever-growing market of electric vehicles.
Agile Driving Experience
When it comes to the driving experience of the Volvo EX30, one word comes to mind – agile. The car exhibits a remarkable lightness and nippiness on the road. The suspension setup is perfectly balanced, not too hard or too soft, allowing it to glide over bumps effortlessly. The overall driving experience feels refined and comfortable, while still offering a sense of fun and excitement. Even on twisty roads, the EX30 shows minimal body roll, providing a composed and balanced ride.
Range and Power Options
The EX30 range offers three different options for potential buyers. The first is a single motor version, equipped with a 270 brake horsepower and a 51 KW battery. With a price tag of 33,785, this option provides a solid balance between power and affordability.
The second option is the single motor extended range, boasting 270 brake horsepower and a 69 KW battery. Priced starting at 385,000, this version offers additional range and power for those seeking a bit more punch.
For the ultimate performance enthusiasts, the twin motor Performance Plus model is the way to go. With a whopping 424 brake horsepower and a 69 KW battery, this variant can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in mere seconds. Comparable to some supercars, the Performance Plus model is surely set to impress.
Is It the Best Small Electric Car?
With its agile driving dynamics, versatile range options, and impressive power capabilities, the Volvo EX30 raises the question – is it the best small electric car in the world? While it certainly has many strong qualities, it’s important to consider the competition and the individual preferences of potential buyers. The EX30 undoubtedly offers an exceptional driving experience, but ultimately, the title of “best” is subjective and dependent on personal tastes and requirements.
The Volvo EX30: A Small Electric Car with a Big Impact
With a price tag just under $41,000, the Volvo EX30 is making waves in the electric car market. This small electric car boasts impressive features and a promising performance that could potentially make it the best in the world.
A Glimpse into the Future
While the current model showcases Volvo’s commitment to electric vehicles, there are exciting plans on the horizon. The introduction of a more rugged ex30 cross country version, with a raised ride height and beefy body kit, is expected in 2024. Additionally, Volvo plans to launch a core entry-level model that will be priced between $30,000 to $31,000, providing competition for other mini electric cars.
Power and Range
The single motor extended range plus version of the EX30 features a larger 69 KW battery that offers up to 275 miles of driving range. Acceleration from 0 to 60 mph takes just over 5 seconds, making it a speedy contender in its class. However, the top speed is limited to 112 mph, in line with Volvo’s commitment to safety.
Driving Experience
Behind the wheel, the Volvo EX30 offers a truly enjoyable driving experience. The focus of the car’s setup is on comfort, making it ideal for day-to-day commuting. Whether you’re navigating busy city streets or embarking on a relaxing weekend getaway, the EX30 delivers a smooth and pleasurable ride.
The Power of Google
One standout feature of the EX30 is the integration of Google’s innovative technology. The car comes equipped with a built-in Google “brain” that seamlessly connects drivers to a range of useful features. The voice activation features work flawlessly, understanding commands and allowing drivers to stay focused on the road without needing to fiddle with physical buttons or touchscreens.
Overall, the Volvo EX30 is a remarkable small electric car that holds promise for a greener future. With its impressive range, comfortable driving experience, and intelligent technology, it is certainly a strong contender in the electric vehicle market. As Volvo continues to innovate and expand their electric car lineup, it is clear that they are committed to leading the way in sustainable transportation.
The Volvo EX30’s Central Screen
Now all the cars functions are operated from this Central screen, much in the way that you get in a Tesla and actually its its pretty intuitive to use Ive been pleasantly surprised. I normally do like physical buttons, but I havent missed them as much as I thought. I would do um. This is um.
A new generation of interface is the first car to get it and its very slick. Theres, no um, no sort of uh lag there when Im, trying to change between screens youve got key functions to down here at the bottom. The things that youd use a lot opening and closing the glove box going here and youve got the main functions about the car. There is an awful lot to show you on this and Id be here. Well, it be a very long video, but first impressions are that actually yeah its not as irritating as some of these systems can be? U probably because Im a bit familiar with it from other Volvo cars, um and – and it does seem to work quite well now.
The Benefits of Removing Physical Buttons
There are a couple of practical benefits to removing those physical buttons. It saves on cost there a few of parts to make, but it also has an environmental benefit. As by reducing the number of parts and materials used, it helps to reduce the emissions produced in the cars manufacturing and the ex30 has the smallest CO2 fit print of any Volvo car to Music date.
The Spacious and Airy Feel
When stepping into the Volvo EX30, one can’t help but notice the lack of clutter and the exceptional layout of buttons and trim. The interior feels bright, spacious, and airy, creating a serene atmosphere for the driver. Surprisingly, despite its compact size similar to a Nissan Juke or Ford Puma, the EX30 manages to provide a sense of roominess that exceeds expectation.
The One Pedal Driving Experience
One area where Volvo could improve is the implementation of one pedal driving. Initially, I was eager to test this feature and turned it on as soon as I started driving. To my disappointment, the one pedal driving was already activated. This left me perplexed, as I couldn’t feel the true essence of this technology. Instead, I found myself relying more on the foot brake than I had hoped. It is a shame that the potential of one pedal driving in the EX30 is not fully realized.
A Refined Driving Experience
Despite the minor setbacks, the overall driving experience in the Volvo EX30 is refined. However, during my journey on the highway, I noticed a noticeable amount of wind noise entering the cabin through the beautifully shaped mirrors. This slight inconvenience aside, I must confess that the EX30 has surprised me. As someone who wasn’t particularly impressed with Volvo’s previous electric car offerings, I find myself genuinely enjoying this one. It strikes a brilliant balance between comfort and excitement, making it a joy to drive.
Reduced Parts and Affordable Pricing
Volvo has managed to create a small electric car, the EX30, that not only drives well but also looks great and has a beautifully designed interior. And the best part? It costs less than its competitors. How did Volvo achieve this feat? Well, for starters, they have reduced the number of parts used in the car, saving on costs. Additionally, the car is being built in China and shares the same hardware as other well-known models like the smart and the zika X.
Lithian Iron Phosphate Batteries
One of the key ways Volvo has made their entry-level models more affordable is by using different batteries. In this case, they have opted for lithium iron phosphate (LFP) batteries. These batteries have several advantages. They can tolerate more frequent and faster charging, which is a big plus for electric car owners. They also do not require expensive materials like nickel, manganese, and cobalt, reducing costs even further.
Benefits and Drawbacks
LFP batteries definitely have their benefits, but there are also some downsides. On the positive side, they are cost-effective and help in bringing down the overall price of the car. However, they do have some drawbacks. Firstly, they are heavier compared to other battery types. This may affect the overall weight and performance of the car. Furthermore, LFP batteries are less likely to be recycled since they do not contain valuable minerals. Lastly, they are known to not perform as well in cold weather conditions.
Performance and Efficiency
While it is still too early to provide a detailed report on the car’s efficiency, we will be able to evaluate it further as we spend more time with the vehicle. However, what is worth mentioning is the driving experience itself. The Volvo EX30 handles well and offers a smooth ride, making it a pleasure to drive. Additionally, the car is not only visually appealing but also boasts a well-designed interior that exudes quality and attention to detail.
The Interior of the Volvo EX30
In the depths of winter, the Volvo EX30 proves to be a reliable companion. Unlike its counterparts, the extended range and twin Motor Performance versions, this car does not come with a heat pump as standard. However, this does not diminish its efficiency or range. Inside the car, comfort is the primary focus. The plush materials and attention to detail make it a pleasant place to be.
Unlike other cars where the backseat is often neglected, the EX30 ensures that even the back passengers have a luxurious experience. The spaciousness of the backseat is achieved through clever design choices like removing speakers from the doors and incorporating a Soundbar that runs across the back of the dashboard. This not only provides a sense of openness but also delivers excellent audio quality.
Moving on, the attention to detail extends to the practical aspects as well. The backseat features a couple of USB C ports, allowing passengers to conveniently charge their devices. Additionally, the central console is equipped with a sliding area for cup holders. This unique feature allows for customization, with the ability to extend the cup holder area for two or just one. And let’s not forget about the size of the cup holders themselves they are spacious enough to accommodate even large bottles, which is a relief for those who have encountered the frustration of undersized cup holders in other vehicles.
The Convenience of Electric Windows
Located in the central console are the buttons for the electric windows. This placement ensures easy access and control for both the driver and the passengers. Gone are the days of reaching across the car to roll down or up a window. With the simple press of a button, the windows glide effortlessly, providing a seamless and convenient experience.
Unveiling the Potential
The Volvo EX30 showcases the potential of small electric cars. Its thoughtful design, attention to detail, and emphasis on comfort elevate it to a level that sets it apart from its competitors. While it may lack a heat pump as standard, its extended range and twin Motor Performance versions make up for it with their impressive efficiency and range. The interior of the EX30 redefines what it means to be a small electric car, proving that size does not have to compromise luxury.
The Interior
You have to press a little button here in the middle for the rear windows to get those up and down. I think generally, though, in here its just so nicely put together with interesting textures and materials. I was expecting to come and see it today and just think yeah maybe feels a little bit less expensive in here, feels a bit cheap, feels like the less affordable end of the range, and it doesn’t feel like that.
The seats are comfortable, and yes, there are some plastics down the bottom that feel a bit more cost-conscious, but that doesn’t bother me at all because they’re really interesting and they’ve got a good texture. I think overall, this interior is one of the nicest I’ve seen in a very long time, and as Manos keeps saying, it’s giving me BMW i3 vibes. And I say that in a really good way. For a small car, there is a lot to unpick about the Volvo EX30.
First Impressions
My first impressions of the long-range single motor are that it’s good, very good. But I will caveat that by saying we weren’t quite as impressed with how the dual motor versions drive, but we will be reviewing that car separately. So if you aren’t already, make sure you subscribe to the channel and, of course, do switch your notifications on so you’re the first to know when that video and all our others have landed.
