GMC Hummer EV Review: A Powerful Beast with Impressive Range
Meet the GMC Hummer EV, a vehicle that is not only the size of a small planet but also boasts an impressive amount of power. In fact, the top-tier Edition 1 model is equipped with three electric motors, with two situated on the rear axle and one on the front. This setup allows the Hummer EV to generate a mind-boggling 1000 horsepower and 1200lb ft of torque.
With such immense power, it’s no surprise that the Hummer EV can go from 0 to 62 miles per hour in an astonishing three seconds. This acceleration performance puts it on par with a Ferrari 296 GTB, a supercar known for its exceptional speed on the road. However, the Hummer EV’s capabilities don’t end there. It also boasts a claimed range of 329 miles, thanks to its massive 205-kilowatt hour battery pack. This is equivalent to the power of six Honda e batteries.
A Beast of a Vehicle: Size, Weight, and Power
The GMC Hummer EV is not only a powerhouse but also a behemoth in terms of its size and weight. Weighing around 4100 kilograms, it is as heavy as nine Caterham 170Rs, a staggering comparison. This raises the question of what it’s like to drive a vehicle of this magnitude on a twisty canyon road in California.
Despite its imposing size and weight, the Hummer EV handles surprisingly well. While it may feel chunky, the driver is always aware of the immense bulk surrounding them, which brings a certain level of responsibility. The steering, though lacking in feedback, is responsive enough, leaving little slack in its movement. However, the true standout feature is the four-wheel steering system. This enables the Hummer EV to execute tight turns with an incredibly small turning circle of just 10.9 meters. To put it into perspective, it can maneuver in a space similar to that of a Tesla Model 3.
A Smooth Ride, Thanks to Air Suspension
When it comes to the ride quality, the GMC Hummer EV does not disappoint. The top-spec models, including the Edition 1, are equipped with air suspension, ensuring a comfortable driving experience. Despite its massive weight, the Hummer EV glides along the road, providing a smooth and enjoyable ride for the occupants. This combination of power and comfort truly sets the Hummer EV apart from its competitors.

Jacking Up for Off-Road Work
And it can jack the car right up for off-road work or lower it down, which makes things easier for getting in and out or if you want to have marginally less terrible drag on the motorway.
Impressive Throttle Response
Now, a dead giveaway for any car with a petrol or diesel engine that weighs over four tonnes is the fact that it is definitely going to bog down at low revs. But this thing just completely eradicates that, because it’s got so much torque. I shall now demonstrate what happens when you prod the throttle. The nose rises up to the sky, and it just leaps forward instantly, whatever speed you’re doing.
Handling around Corners
So, can it go around corners? Yes. Yes, it can. Eventually. You turn the wheel, it doesn’t really like changing direction. You feel the squidge from those off-road tyres, and there’s this slightly unnerving moment where it washes wide. But then eventually, the tyres key into the road. And then, when you’re going around the corner itself, there’s actually much less body roll than you would expect. I’ll put that down to the fancy suspension and the fact that we’ve got this relatively low centre of gravity thanks to that enormous battery.
The Joy of Driving
The bigger question, though, is am I enjoying myself? It certainly commands all of my attention, and it’s such a novel experience driving this car that I suppose I am. Wasn’t expecting that. Expect the unexpected Jack because we’ve got this Hummer EV for the next few days, which means a road trip.

The Birth of a Legend: The History of the Humvee
No, no, no. Not that Baghdad. We’re talking about a small town in the middle of the Arizona desert, miles away from anywhere, built around a copper mine. To understand why we want to visit this seemingly nondescript company town that shares a name with the Iraqi capital, you need to delve into the history of the Humvee.
It all began in 1983 when AM General won a 1 billion contract from the Pentagon to produce 55,000 of its high mobility, multipurpose wheeled vehicles for the US military. And thus, the Humvee, affectionately nicknamed the Hummer, was born. Over the years, 72,000 Humvees were produced and utilized in various conflicts, transporting troops, carrying cargo, and wielding guns across inhospitable desert terrains.
The Road-Going Hummer H1 and the Influence of Arnold Schwarzenegger
In 1992, sales of a road-going version of the Humvee, called the Hummer H1, commenced. This was largely due to the persistence of none other than actor and protein shake enthusiast, Arnold Schwarzenegger. While it achieved moderate success, the Hummer H1 only achieved substantial sales numbers when General Motors (GM) acquired the Hummer brand in 1999 and introduced smaller and more affordable models like the H2 and H3. In fact, sales peaked in 2006 with over 70,000 units sold.
However, by 2010, sales were declining rapidly, and GM decided to pull the plug on the Hummer brand. Shortly after, in 2012, the military Humvee was declared “no longer feasible for combat.” One would think that would be the end of the Hummer era, but something extraordinary happened.
A Hummer Haven: Exploring an Auction Site
As I stood among a sea of Hummers, stretching as far as the eye could see, I couldn’t help but wonder what this place truly was. Curiosity got the better of me, and I approached one of the gentlemen nearby who informed me that it was indeed an auction site.
It turns out that this seemingly obscure company town in the Arizona desert has become a sanctuary for Hummer enthusiasts. A place where these mighty vehicles, once iconic symbols of power and adventure, find new homes. It’s a testament to the enduring legacy of the Hummer brand and the passion it continues to ignite among its dedicated fanbase.
GMC Hummer EV: An Exciting Cybertruck Rival

As the auction site in the middle of the Arizona desert showcases, the legacy
The History of the Hummer
In 2012, the Hummer seemed to be a thing of the past, both on and off the battlefield. It was like a dinosaur that had been put out to pasture. However, with the rise of the electric era, General Motors (GM) saw an opportunity to resurrect the Hummer under the GMC brand and give it a new life as an electric super truck. This decision was prompted by the presence of rivals such as the Ford F-150 Lightning and the Rivian R1T in the market. GM knew that time was of the essence, so they worked relentlessly to bring this truck from conception to production in just over two years, setting a record for the speed of production within the company.
A Beast Reborn
In terms of size, the new Hummer EV and the original H1 are quite similar. They share the same dimensions and track widths, although the H1’s track width was specifically designed to match that of a tank so it could follow in its path. Fortunately, the Hummer EV does not face the same limitations. Apart from their physical dimensions, these vehicles couldn’t be more different.
Military Roots vs. Electric Innovation
The H1 was solely designed for military service, while the Hummer EV has embraced the electric revolution. Gone are the days of relying on fossil fuels; this super truck boasts an all-electric powertrain. With a staggering 1000 BHP under the hood, the Hummer EV is a force to be reckoned with on the road.
Cybertruck Rivalry
With the rise of electric trucks, the Hummer EV finds itself in direct competition with Tesla’s highly anticipated Cybertruck. Both vehicles have garnered significant attention and excitement from enthusiasts and consumers alike. The Hummer EV presents a compelling alternative to the Cybertruck, offering its own unique blend of power, design, and capabilities.
Online Auction Excitement
If owning a piece of US military history is your dream, there is a way to make it a reality. Ritchie Bros., a company known for buying up ex-military equipment, hosts online auctions every Wednesday. Among their offerings, you may stumble upon a Hummer, ready to be owned again. The price range varies depending on the condition, ranging from a humble five to a hefty 40,000 US dollars. For those interested, this is an opportunity not to be missed.
The Electric Future
As the electric era gathers pace, the GMC Hummer EV emerges as a formidable contender in the super truck market. Its powerful performance, electric innovation, and rich military history make it a unique and intriguing choice for consumers seeking an electric vehicle that is both rugged and capable. With rivals like the Cybertruck and the Rivian R1T already making waves, it will be fascinating to see how the Hummer EV holds up against the competition. Only time will tell if this reincarnation of the legendary Hummer will carve its own path in the electric revolution.
GMC Hummer EV Review: 1000 BHP Cybertruck Rival Tested
This car was designed to be as silly as possible. As I’ll now demonstrate. Right then.. We found ourselves a very quiet canyon road, the perfect place to try the launch control function on this new Hummer EV.
Watts to Freedom Mode
But it’s not called launch control. It’s called Watts to Freedom mode. And I’m told if I hit the traction control button twice, ooh! Yes, my seat starts vibrating, all sorts of graphics are happening. The whole car lowers and that’s all happened. So it now says: keep your foot on the brake and then floor it. Floor it, I shall. Whoa. That is… well, to be honest, it’s the familiar sensation we’ve all got used to with EVs, isn’t it? The blood goes to the back of your body. You get a slightly nauseous feeling in the pit of your stomach. But the difference here is you’re doing it in something the size of a medium bungalow. It just feels totally bizarre. And the amount of momentum you gather in not a lot of time is just extraordinary. Please prospective Hummer owners, do not do this. Do not do Watts to Freedom mode when other cars are around. Because honestly, there could be some very, very big, expensive accidents going on. The brakes are good. They’re not miracle workers.
Off Road Mode
I tell you what, seeing as we’ve got a whole desert full of sand, shall we have a go at that off-road? Right, launch control again. Off-Road mode, this time. *laughs* Lots of wheel spin, not nearly as quick.
The GMC Hummer EV’s Battery Life
When I got behind the wheel of the GMC Hummer EV, it felt like I was digging four holes in the dirt. The power and torque under my control was immense, and I couldn’t help but feel a surge of excitement. However, that excitement was short-lived as I noticed the battery draining at an alarming rate. It didn’t come as a surprise, though, considering the sheer power this truck possesses.
Rapid Charging Speeds
One thing that impressed me about the Hummer EV was its ability to charge quickly. With an 800 volt electrical architecture, this beast can charge at up to 350 watts. This is not only blazing fast but also necessary when you have a massive battery to fill.
Adding Range in Just Minutes
With such a fast charging capability, the Hummer EV can theoretically add 100 miles of range in just 12 minutes. That’s impressive, considering the size of this vehicle and the amount of power it consumes. Gone are the days of waiting for hours to charge your electric vehicle. The Hummer EV ensures that no opportunity to charge up shall be missed.
Easter Eggs Galore
The engineers behind the Hummer EV have clearly had a lot of fun with the design and features of this truck. There are so many little surprises and details that make it a joy to explore. One such detail is the “Hummer” branding prominently displayed at the front of the vehicle. It’s a reminder of the iconic brand that this EV is a part of.
Smart Headlights
The headlights on the Hummer EV are not just for illumination. They also serve as a visual representation of your battery charge. As the battery tops up, more and more bars will illuminate, giving you a quick and visual way to check your state of charge. It’s a small but thoughtful detail that adds to the overall experience of driving this electric truck.
The Mega Power Frunk
Similar to the F-150 Lightning, the Hummer EV features an electric powered frunk. However, this frunk is a bit different. It’s spacious and designed to accommodate bags, particularly those that hold the roof panels when they’re removed. It’s a practical and clever feature that enhances the utility of this truck.
In conclusion, the GMC Hummer EV is a powerful electric truck that demands attention. Its fast charging speeds, thoughtful design details, and ample storage space make it a strong contender in the electric truck market. While it may gobble through battery at a ferocious rate, its ability to charge quickly ensures that you won’t have to wait long to get back on the road. Overall, the Hummer EV proves to be a worthy rival to the Cybertruck and sets a high standard for electric trucks to come.
GMC Hummer EV Review: 1000 BHP Cybertruck Rival Tested
Immensely Powerful and Handy
But its a really really handy space. The GMC Hummer EV boasts a staggering 1000 BHP, making it a true rival to the Cybertruck. With such immense power, it’s no wonder that this electric monster is turning heads in the automotive world.
A Minor Setback
The only black mark is, I can’t figure out how to close this electrically. So I’m going to have to use my immense manpower. There we go. Right, another thing to note: three windscreen wipers. Don’t see that very often, but a total necessity because the windscreen is just so wide and not very high at all.
Ready for Any Adventure
Erm, down here extra cladding. Every Edition 1 model comes with something called the Extreme Off-Road pack, which gives you extra skid plates when you’re messing around off-road. Same here with the tyres, 35-inch off-road tyres. You can fit 37-inch off-road tyres if you really want to show off. The air suspension, which you’ve got a great view of under there, can raise the car off the ground, providing a ground clearance of 16 inches. Im doing inches because we’re in America. And then the lowest height is 8 inches of ground clearance. And I’m told it can wade up to 800mm. Which is good, but a Land Rover Defender is 900mm. One-nil to the UK.
Versatile Design
Come round the back, I want to show you a bit more. Now, this stating the obvious is the pickup version. There is going to be a closed-back SUV version coming soon. You see that rear window up there? Quite a cool feature. That can be dropped electrically, just like the side windows. Not quite sure why you would. It’s not like there’s an exhaust to listen to.
With its incredible power, off-road capabilities, and versatile design, the GMC Hummer EV proves to be a formidable competitor to the Cybertruck. Its immense power and rugged features make it ready to tackle any adventure. While it may have a few quirks, such as the unconventional windscreen wipers and the manual closing mechanism, the Hummer EV’s overall performance and capabilities make it a force to be reckoned with.
And let’s not forget the unique rear window and soon-to-be-released SUV version, which add to its appeal. Whether you’re a fan of electric vehicles or simply appreciate a powerful and versatile truck, the GMC Hummer EV is definitely worth considering. It may not have all the bells and whistles of traditional petrol-powered trucks, but it certainly makes up for it with its astonishing power and off-road capabilities.

A Futuristic Design
The GMC Hummer EV is making waves in the electric vehicle market as a potential rival to the Cybertruck. With its sleek and futuristic design, the Hummer EV is turning heads and capturing the attention of car enthusiasts worldwide.
One of the standout features of this electric beast is its versatile tailgate. With the push of a button, the hard cover retracts electrically, revealing a two-piece tailgate. The central section drops down, perfect for loading smaller items such as groceries. But it doesn’t end there; with another press of a button, the whole tailgate drops down, allowing for easier access to the bed of the truck. And if that’s not impressive enough, there’s even a step that pops up, ensuring you can easily climb in and out of the vehicle without any mishaps.
Innovative Features
But wait, there’s more! Built into the tailgate is a Bluetooth speaker, adding an unexpected element of fun and convenience. Whether you’re hosting a tailgate party or simply enjoying some downtime outdoors, this feature is sure to enhance your experience. It’s details like these that demonstrate the thought and creativity put into the GMC Hummer EV.
A Lunar Inspiration
The interior of the Hummer EV is where the designers truly let their creativity shine. Taking inspiration from the Apollo 11 Moonshot program, the team has incorporated various lunar-themed elements throughout the cabin. From the Sea of Tranquility grilles on the doors to the lunar surface patterns on the floor mats, every detail has been carefully curated.
The black, grey, and gold color scheme pays homage to the iconic Apollo lunar roving vehicle, which played a crucial role in the moon missions. It’s fascinating to think that GM supplied the wheels, suspension, and motors for this historic vehicle, further cementing the connection between the Hummer EV and space exploration.
An Impressive Achievement
The GMC Hummer EV’s journey from sketch to production in just two years is truly remarkable. Drawing inspiration from the Apollo 11 Moonshot program further emphasizes the remarkable achievement of the design team. This electric powerhouse is not only a rival to the Cybertruck but also a testament to human ingenuity and innovation.
As we eagerly await the release of the GMC Hummer EV, it’s evident that this vehicle is more than just another electric truck. It represents a new era in automotive design and technology, pushing boundaries and challenging the status quo. The combination of its futuristic design, innovative features, and lunar-inspired interior makes the Hummer EV a force to be reckoned with in the electric vehicle market.
So, buckle up and get ready to embark on an electrifying journey with the GMC Hummer EV. It’s time to experience the power, versatility, and boundless possibilities of this astounding machine.
GMC Hummer EV Design and Build Quality
Remember when American cars used to be built like Taiwanese water pistols? Well, that’s certainly not the case with the GMC Hummer EV. Despite it not being a Bentley, the interior is impressively well made. Sure, there are a few flimsy plastics here and there, but overall, the impression is one of strength and solidity. Everything about this vehicle is square, upright, and exudes a sense of machismo.
The Coolest Graphics on the Central Screen
One of the highlights of the GMC Hummer EV is undoubtedly the graphics displayed on the central 13.4-inch screen. By toggling through the different driving modes, you’re treated to some interesting visuals. In Normal mode, it feels like you’re driving on the surface of the Moon. My Mode introduces drones that fly around and illuminate your wheels for some inexplicable reason. Off Road mode takes you to what looks like the surface of Mars, perfect for Elon Musk’s taste. Terrain mode offers a glimpse of a gnarly part of the Moon, while TowHaul mode gives the illusion of towing a space rocket. It’s all good, playful fun.
Exploring with Plenty of Battery
Feeling confident with a generous amount of battery power and some spare time, we decided to take a detour to capture a photo of a spectacular bridge and a rocket with Snoopy perched on top. Because who can resist snapping a picture when encountering such a quirky sight?
With the GMC Hummer EV, GMC has created an electric vehicle that not only offers impressive power and performance—thanks to its 1000 BHP—but also showcases a design and build quality that can rival its competitors. From its robust construction to its attention-grabbing graphics on the central screen, this electric truck is both functional and fun. So, whether you’re looking to conquer rugged off-road terrain or make a stylish statement, the GMC Hummer EV is worth considering.
GMC Hummer EV Review: 1000 BHP Cybertruck Rival Tested
So here we are then. We’ve just rolled into the centre of Bagdad in a Hummer and all is well. There’s not actually a lot going on here. There’s a Copper Plaza over there, there’s a Copper Bar & Grill. There’s a copper museum, except it’s not open on a Monday. Ooh, yeah, and there’s a massive open pit copper mine somewhere over that hill.
Now I know what you’re thinking, because we had the exact same thought. Wouldn’t it be fun to hoon around in a 1000 horsepower Hummer in an open pit mine? Well, we asked the company that owns it several times and they told us to go away. Devastated.
Since we had some time on our hands, we decided to see what Bagdad had to offer. Hello. Until I had a lightbulb moment. The thing is, when you’ve got a Hummer, you don’t always have to take the beaten track. So I had a little scout on Google Maps and it looks like there’s a dirt road that cuts right across the desert. And it’s totally legal and above board, I should add. And it should take us close enough to the mining pit to take a closer look.
This, I quickly realized, was the perfect opportunity to demonstrate one of the Hummer’s most unique features. Now Crabwalk mode. Apparently, if I hit this button down here and hold it, then yes, a crab comes up on my screen.
The GMC Hummer EV’s Crabwalk Mode
The car makes a noise, and I am now in Crabwalk mode. So now the rear tires will move in the same direction as the front up to 10 degrees. Which means, if I put some lock on, we should move diagonally. Ooh, that is bizarre. The car’s pointing that way, but it’s going sideways. Let’s see if we can go this way. Ooh, there’s a little transition. I’m just zigzagging down the road. This is what wizardry is this: That must look crazy from outside. Yeah, can’t really see how that would be overly useful, but it’s a wonderful party trick, nonetheless.
The Growing Demand for Copper in EV production
Ok, so the whole Bagdad Hummer thing was really just a good excuse for a road trip and to tell you a bit of the history of the Humvee. But there’s a reason we’re so interested in this copper production too. Because you see a massive EV like this one, with its high-voltage batteries and motors and wiring, can have up to 120kg of copper in it. A normal petrol or diesel car, by comparison, has about 20 or 30kg. So you can see as EV production ramps right up, demand for copper is about to go through the roof. That’s probably why they wouldn’t let us in, isn’t it? They’re too busy making all this copper for cars like this. Hang on a minute. What’s that?
Continuing the American Road Trip
Our work here was done. With our pockets full of copper, there was still one more stop left on our all-American road trip to not such a small town.
The Design
The GMC Hummer EV is a sight to behold, its design resembling a caricature of the old Hummer. It seems to be purposefully crafted to appeal to the affluent, as an amusement rather than a practical workhorse. However, credit must be given to GM for hitting the nail on the head with this one. They clearly knew their target audience and have managed to infuse this car with an element of fun, reflected in the impressive 65,000 pre-orders they have received.
The Symbolism
Our decision to test the GMC Hummer EV in Las Vegas is symbolic. The original Hummer H1 was a military vehicle, designed for rugged terrain and war zones. Its road-legal version, however, was a compromised and impractical ride. In contrast, the new Hummer EV represents something entirely different. It is the epitome of the electric car world’s version of Las Vegas – brash, glitzy, and over the top.
A Double-Edged Sword
The GMC Hummer EV raises questions about justification. How can one possibly justify a vehicle that weighs so much and guzzles such vast amounts of raw materials? As a car enthusiast, I find myself torn. I am usually an advocate for cars that dare to be different, that possess character. And by my own rules, I should adore this beast. And in many ways, I truly do.
The Beast Within
The GMC Hummer EV packs an incredible punch. With a blistering 1000 BHP, it stands as a strong rival to the Cybertruck. The acceleration is mind-boggling, propelling you forward with an undeniable surge of power. It’s a thrilling experience, one that will undoubtedly leave a smile on every driver’s face.
An Electric Off-Roader
The Hummer EV displays impressive off-roading capabilities. Equipped with advanced technology and multiple driving modes tailored to tackle any terrain, this beast can truly take you anywhere. Its monstrous size and all-terrain tires give it the confidence to conquer even the toughest obstacles.
A Connected Experience
Inside, the GMC Hummer EV provides a modern, connected experience. A large infotainment system takes center stage, offering intuitive controls and seamless connectivity features. This vehicle is not just about power; it’s about delivering a comprehensive and enjoyable driving experience.
Conclusion
In the world of electric vehicles, the GMC Hummer EV is a force to be reckoned with. It may defy logic with its excessive weight and use of resources, but it captures the essence of fun and excitement that many car enthusiasts crave. While it may not be for everyone, there is no denying the impact and allure of this electrifying beast.
