The BYD Dolphin: A New Contender in the Electric Vehicle Market

The BYD Dolphin is the latest offering from Chinese automaker BYD, and it’s set to make waves in the electric vehicle market. With a starting price of around £6,000, it’s certainly an affordable option for those looking to make the switch to electric. But how does it stack up against some of its key rivals, such as the MG4 EV and the VW ID3? In this review, we’ll dive deep into the features and performance of the BYD Dolphin to see if it’s worth its price tag.

Trim Levels and Pricing

At the time of filming, there are four trim levels available for the BYD Dolphin in the UK. Starting off, we have the Active model, which has a starting price of just £26,195. It comes with a 44.9 kWh battery pack and 70 kW of power. Moving up the range, we have the Boost model, which adds an additional £1,000 to the price tag. It has the same battery pack as the Active model but boasts a more powerful motor rated at 130 kW.

The Comfort trim is where things start to get more interesting. For an additional £3,195, you get a larger 60.4 kWh battery and a total power output of 150 kW. Finally, for an extra £1,500, you can opt for the Design trim, which adds extra features like a panoramic glass roof.

Impressive Electric Range

One standout feature of the BYD Dolphin is its electric range. With a WLTP claim of 265 miles, it surpasses many of its competitors. This can be attributed to the innovative Blade Battery pack, which uses lithium iron cells instead of the more common lithium-ion cells found in other EVs. This not only improves the range but also enhances safety.

Performance and Driving Experience

When it comes to performance, the BYD Dolphin doesn’t disappoint. The combination of a powerful motor and ample power output ensures a smooth and exhilarating driving experience. The instant torque delivery provides quick acceleration, making overtaking effortless. The suspension is well-tuned, offering a comfortable ride even on bumpy roads.

Interior and Technology

The BYD Dolphin may be budget-friendly, but it doesn’t skimp on interior quality and technology. The design is modern and sleek, with premium materials used throughout the cabin. The seats are comfortable and supportive, perfect for long journeys. The inclusion of a panoramic glass roof in the Design trim adds to the sense of openness and spaciousness.

When it comes to technology, the BYD Dolphin comes equipped with a range of features to enhance the driving experience. This includes a responsive touchscreen infotainment system, smartphone integration, and advanced safety features such as adaptive cruise control and lane-keeping assist.

Verdict: A Worthy Contender

The BYD Dolphin is certainly a worthy contender in the electric vehicle market. With its affordable price tag, impressive electric range, and well-rounded performance, it presents a compelling choice for eco-conscious consumers. While it may not have the brand recognition of its competitors, the BYD Dolphin proves that quality

BYD Dolphin Review (2023)

Durability and Strength

The BYD Dolphin boasts impressive claims regarding its durability and strength. According to the manufacturer, this electric vehicle (EV) surpasses industry standards in terms of its robustness. While I cannot directly compare its battery pack to others on the market, the manufacturer’s statements point to a more durable and long-lasting power source.

Electric Range

One crucial aspect of any EV is its electric range, and the BYD Dolphin doesn’t disappoint in this regard. The range varies depending on the trim level. The active trim offers approximately 21 miles of WLTP range. In the Boost trim, the range drops to around 193 miles, while the design and Comfort trims provide approximately 265 miles. Notably, all trim levels come equipped with a heat pump as standard, enhancing their performance.

Impressive Performance

During my own driving test in the design trim, I achieved a commendable range of 23 to 35 miles per kilowatt-hour. This places the BYD Dolphin in direct competition with some of the best EVs currently available, especially considering its price range. Its performance, when compared to its biggest competitor, the MG4 EV, is particularly noteworthy. The mileage leaderboards indicate that the BYD Dolphin performs admirably.

Regenerative Braking

To maximize efficiency and energy recouping, the BYD Dolphin features regenerative braking. However, this feature is automatically activated, which may not be ideal for urban commutes. As I approach a traffic light and lift my foot off the accelerator at 30 mph, the vehicle decelerates gradually. While this is expected, the lack of one-pedal driving, found in some of its competitors, can make urban driving slightly more cumbersome.

The BYD Dolphin (2023) proves to be a strong contender in the EV market. Its durability, strength, electric range, and impressive performance make it a worthy competitor to the MG4 EV. Although the regenerative braking could be improved, the overall package that BYD offers is compelling and showcases their commitment to producing quality electric vehicles. As the EV market continues to grow, it is refreshing to see options like the BYD Dolphin that provide an excellent balance of features, performance, and affordability.

Charging Capability

Byd Dolphin, the latest electric vehicle from BYD, impresses with its charging capabilities. Although it currently lacks certain features that may be incorporated through future firmware updates, the Dolphin still offers efficient charging options.

When it comes to rapid recharging, the Dolphin allows you to recoup energy at an accelerated rate by plugging it into an appropriate DC charger. With the smaller battery pack models, you can attain an input of up to 60 KW, while the larger ones boast a rating of 88 KW. While these figures may not be class-leading, it’s worth noting that the Dolphin can go from 10% to 80% charge in approximately 40 minutes.

For home charging, the Dolphin Active model comes with a 7 KW onboard charger, enabling you to go from 0% to 100% through the Type 2 port in 7 hours and 18 minutes. On the other hand, the Boost model features an 11 KW onboard charger. If you have access to a three-phase power supply, you can achieve the same amount of charge in just 5 hours.

Even the Comfort and Design trims, which come with the larger battery pack, are equipped with an 11 KW onboard charger. This means that they can be charged up quickly via an AC charge point, taking only 6 hours and 12 minutes.

Vehicle-to-Load Charging

All the BYD Dolphins, regardless of the trim level, are fitted with vehicle-to-load charging, which is an excellent feature. This means that you can utilize the energy stored in the vehicle’s battery to power external devices or even your home. The Dolphin not only provides clean transportation but also offers the convenience of using its power for other purposes.

Discharging the Battery Pack

The BYD Dolphin offers a unique feature that sets it apart from many of its rivals. With the included adapter, users can actually discharge the battery pack and use the power to operate household appliances or even charge another electric vehicle. This functionality is not commonly found in other electric cars, making the Dolphin truly standout in this aspect. Although not something that everyone will utilize on a daily basis, it opens up possibilities for those who enjoy camping trips or simply want to enjoy a cup of tea while using their vehicle.

Variety in Performance

The BYD Dolphin comes in different trim levels, each offering a different motor performance and battery pack capacity. In the Active trim, you can expect a total power of 70 kW or 94 horsepower, with 180 Nm of torque. The top speed is limited to 93 mph. Moving on to the Boost model, you’ll still have the same battery pack as the Active, but with a more powerful motor. This results in 130 kW of power or 174 horsepower, with the torque figures yet to be revealed. The top speed increases slightly to 99 mph.

Comfort and Design Enhancements

For those opting for the Comfort and Design trims, the BYD Dolphin offers a larger battery pack and an even more powerful motor. This translates to a total power of 150 kW or 201 horsepower, with 310 Nm of torque. The top speed remains the same at 99 mph. In testing the Design model, it was found to have impressive acceleration, clocking in at 0 to 20 mph in a short amount of time.

Overall, the BYD Dolphin presents a compelling option in the electric car market. With its ability to discharge the battery pack and its range of trim levels, it offers versatility and practicality. While the MG4 EV is a strong competitor, the Dolphin may have the edge with its unique features and specifications. As electric vehicles continue to gain popularity, it’s exciting to see new models like the BYD Dolphin pushing the boundaries and offering innovative solutions for consumers.

Performance

The BYD Dolphin certainly doesn’t disappoint when it comes to performance. With an impressive 0 to 30 mph time of 2.02 seconds, it offers a thrilling experience right from the get-go. The acceleration is even more remarkable with a 0 to 60 mph time of just 2.96 seconds, surpassing the claims of any other manufacturer. And when it comes to overtaking, it’s quick too, with a 50 to 70 mph time of 3.28 seconds. There’s no denying that the BYD Dolphin is a whole lot of fun to drive.

Handling

However, while the BYD Dolphin excels in terms of power, it does have some drawbacks when it comes to handling. Particularly in the comfort and design trims, where the power is at its maximum, there is noticeable torque steer. This means that when you put your foot down, the front wheels spin due to all the power being directed solely to them. This can become a concern when taking sharp corners or driving on wet surfaces or rural roads. It’s a shame that the BYD Dolphin opts for a front-wheel drive setup, as some of its competitors, such as the MG4 EV, the ID4, and BMW I4, offer rear-wheel drive or all-wheel drive configurations, providing added confidence in challenging situations.

Driver’s Experience

Although the BYD Dolphin may not quite match up to its competitors in terms of the driver’s feel, it still offers an engaging experience. When maneuvering around winding country roads, it left me with a massive smile on my face. The handling may have its limitations, but the overall driving experience is enjoyable and provides thrills that can’t be ignored. It’s clear that BYD has put effort into making the Dolphin a car that brings joy to the driver, even if it may not offer the same level of confidence as some of its rivals.

In conclusion, the BYD Dolphin is undoubtedly a powerful and exhilarating electric vehicle. Its impressive acceleration and top speed make it a force to be reckoned with on the road. However, its front-wheel drive setup and torque steer issues may leave some drivers wanting more stability in challenging situations. Nonetheless, if you’re after a car that will put a smile on your face and offer an entertaining driving experience, the BYD Dolphin is definitely worth considering.

Suspension System and Ride Quality

In the active trim of the BYD Dolphin, you will find a torsion beam setup for its suspension system. However, in the other trims, like the design trim, you have a multi-link system at the rear. This multi-link system provides a delightful experience, especially when driving in and around the city. It effectively absorbs most of the road imperfections such as speed bumps and potholes, giving you a smooth and almost floating-like feeling.

Comparing it to its competitor, the MG4 EV, the BYD Dolphin offers a more comfortable ride. The Dolphin’s suspension system is not as harsh or stiff as the MG4 EV. However, there is a slight drawback to the BYD Dolphin’s ride quality. When driving on challenging routes or highways, you may experience a somewhat bumpy ride. For example, on country roads with occasional potholes, the BYD Dolphin doesn’t feel as settled, causing some bouncing around.

It’s important to note that this minor inconvenience should not be a major concern for most drivers. The BYD Dolphin is primarily designed for city driving, and in this aspect, it exceeds expectations. The overall driving experience is enjoyable, and it will easily meet the needs of many consumers.

Summary of the BYD Dolphin

In conclusion, the BYD Dolphin offers a comfortable and pleasant driving experience within city limits. Its suspension system effectively absorbs road imperfections, providing a smooth ride. While it may not handle challenging routes as well as some of its competitors, it still delivers a satisfactory performance. For those looking for a reliable electric vehicle for city driving, the BYD Dolphin is definitely worth considering.

Interior and Cabin Noise

When it comes to the interior of the BYD Dolphin, the cabin noise is neither the best nor the worst. At lower speeds, the cabin is well insulated, providing a quieter experience. However, as you increase your speed, some road noise starts to creep in from the front of the cabin. This is mainly due to the tires. Additionally, you may also hear some wind deflecting off the A-pillars and wing mirrors. While it’s not too bothersome overall, it’s worth keeping in mind if noise levels are a priority for you.

Audio System

The BYD Dolphin is equipped with a six-speaker audio system. It falls somewhere in the middle when it comes to audio quality – not the best, but certainly not the worst either. It delivers a satisfactory performance throughout the sound frequency range. Of course, if you’re an audiophile, you might have higher expectations. Interestingly, there is also a six-speaker audio system with optimization in the design and comfort trims, but there is limited information available on its specifics. If I do obtain further details from the manufacturer, I’ll be sure to include them in the description or annotations section.

Technology and Display

One highlight of the BYD Dolphin is the 12.8-inch display situated at the center of the dashboard. While it cannot be tilted towards the driver or passenger, it does offer rotational capabilities. This means you can use it in both horizontal and vertical formats, depending on your preference or the specific applications you’re using. This versatility is particularly useful for functions like navigation or if you’re sharing the vehicle with someone who prefers a different display configuration.

Infotainment System

The BYD Dolphin’s infotainment system boasts a horizontal format, which personally, I find more preferable as it provides a better view over the bonnet. However, I understand that some may prefer the vertical format, as it offers a portrait-like experience. The customization options are certainly there for you to explore with a simple tap on the screen or a button conveniently located on the steering wheel. This intuitive design allows for easy navigation even while on the move.

Fluid and Responsive

The infotainment system of the BYD Dolphin is also commendably fluid and responsive. It supports Android Auto and Apple CarPlay, allowing for seamless connectivity with your smartphone. With a wide range of connectivity options available, you can easily stay connected and enjoy your favorite apps and features on the go.

A Dim Screen

One downside, however, is the dimness of the screen itself. Similar to my experience with the BYD ATO 3, the display on the BD Dolphin is not as bright as one would expect. This can be particularly problematic when using the infotainment system in bright sunlight conditions. Navigation data and other important information displayed on the screen may become difficult to see. It would be great if BYD could address this in a future firmware update, but it is possible that this dimness is a limitation of the panel itself.

Bright Instrument Cluster

On a positive note, the secondary 5-inch display, which serves as the instrument cluster, is actually very bright. In fact, it may even be too bright for some users. If you find it overpowering, you may want to consider toning it down a few notches to suit your preferences. Nevertheless, this brightness ensures that vital information displayed on the instrument cluster is easily visible at all times.

In conclusion, the BYD Dolphin’s infotainment system offers a range of customizable options and provides a fluid and responsive user experience. However, the dimness of the main screen may pose visibility issues, especially in bright sunlight. On the other hand, the instrument cluster display is bright and clear, though some users may find it too intense. Overall, the BYD Dolphin’s infotainment system has its strengths and weaknesses, and users may need to weigh these factors when determining whether it outperforms the MG4 EV or not.

Driving Information and Safety Systems

The BYD Dolphin offers all the essential driving information in a convenient location. Positioned just beneath the top segment of the steering wheel, the display is easily visible and can be adjusted with the steering column. This placement is similar to what you would find in some rival alternatives, and I have no complaints about it. While it would have been nice to have a head-up display, considering the overall price point of the vehicle, I cannot be too critical.

Controls and Buttons

To interact with the driver’s display, there are several physical buttons located on the steering wheel. This provides easy access to different functionalities while keeping your hands on the wheel. Additionally, there is a flurry of buttons found on the dashboard, which is certainly appreciated. The abundance of controls ensures quick and convenient operation of various features.

Storage Space

The BYD Dolphin boasts ample storage space within the cabin. Starting with the glove box, it is optimized for right-hand drive vehicles and offers a generous amount of room. Moving on to the front door bins, they can accommodate a 500 mL bottle and also provide space for small to medium-sized valuables. Towards the rear, the door bins are slightly more limited but still sufficient for most needs.

Furthermore, there is a small area located towards the rear portion of the center console, alongside two USB Type-C ports. This additional spot can be used to store miscellaneous items. Moreover, there is a pull-down armrest compartment, which reveals two cup holders. This convenient feature is especially useful for storing beverages during your drive.

Front Cabin Features

The front of the BYD Dolphin offers a comfortable and well-equipped cabin. Along with the aforementioned storage options, the driver and front passenger have access to essential controls and amenities. The layout is designed to provide easy reach and intuitive operation to enhance the overall driving experience.

In conclusion, the BYD Dolphin impresses with its user-friendly layout and extensive storage options. The driver’s display is conveniently placed, and the presence of physical buttons ensures easy access to essential features. With adequate storage compartments throughout the cabin, organizing your belongings becomes hassle-free. Whether it’s the glove box, door bins, or the pull-down armrest compartment, the Dolphin offers ample space.

Center Console and Storage

Let’s start by discussing the center console area of the BYD Dolphin. At the top, you’ll find a non-slip bay, which is great for keeping your belongings in place while driving. As you move further down, there’s another non-slip bay hidden underneath a retractable cover. This provides additional storage space, perfect for storing smaller items.

Continuing downwards, you’ll come across two cup holders, which are conveniently located for easy access. But what’s really impressive is the wireless charger that is integrated into the design trim of the Dolphin. This feature eliminates the hassle of dealing with tangled charging cables and provides a convenient way to charge your devices on the go.

What sets the BYD Dolphin apart is its inclusion of not one, but two high-speed USB Type-C ports. In the Active and Boost trims, these ports are rated at 18 watts, allowing for quick charging of compatible devices. However, if you opt for the more expensive Comfort and Design trims, you’ll be treated to even more power with 18 and 60-watt USB Type-C ports. This means that you can easily charge a wide range of devices, including power-hungry gadgets.

Boot and Practicality

Moving on to the boot space, the BYD Dolphin offers a generous 345 liters of storage capacity. This should give you ample room for your daily errands and grocery shopping. But if you need even more space, simply fold down the rear seats in a 60/40 split to increase the cargo area. Doing so will provide you with a spacious 1310 liters of storage, allowing you to transport larger items or tackle bigger shopping trips without any hassle.

In terms of design, the BYD Dolphin features a practical hatchback design, making loading and unloading items a breeze. Additionally, there’s an underfloor compartment in the boot, which is perfect for keeping your charging cables organized and out of the way. The flat loading bay further enhances the practicality of the Dolphin, ensuring that you can easily maneuver bulky items in and out of the vehicle.

It’s worth noting that the BYD Dolphin lacks a front compartment, which is a minor drawback. However, considering the amount of storage space available at the rear of the vehicle, this shouldn’t be a major concern for most drivers. Whether you’re running daily errands or embarking on a weekend road trip, the Dolphin’s storage options are sure to meet your needs.

Seating Comfort

Now, while that’s all very well and good, what about when it comes to seating comfort? Well, here I had absolutely no problems whatsoever. As someone who’s just under 6 feet, whether I was seated at the front or rear of the cabin, I found it to be quite impressive in terms of headroom and legroom. Especially when sitting in the rear outer seats, the space was more than sufficient. However, I must mention that the headroom in the middle seats was quite limited. But, if you have small children or younger adults occupying those seats, it shouldn’t be a problem.

Furthermore, it’s great to see that the manufacturer has optimized the footwell design, making it completely flat. Moving to the front of the cabin, you’ll find six-way electronic seats for the driver, while the passenger has four-way electronic controls. Surprisingly, these features come as standard, unlike many of its competitors. Additionally, in the comfort and design trims, you’ll enjoy heated front seats. There’s also a panoramic glass roof and rear privacy glass, adding a touch of luxury.

Interior Design

Moving on to the interior design, I must appreciate what the manufacturers have tried to achieve. While it may not be everyone’s cup of tea, they have managed to create a unique and modern look. The attention to detail and the choice of materials give it a sophisticated appeal. The dashboard layout is clean and minimalistic, which creates a sense of openness in the cabin. The digital instrument cluster and infotainment system are intuitively placed, providing easy access to all the necessary features.

Comparison with the MG4 EV

Now, let’s address the elephant in the room – is the BYD Dolphin better than the MG4 EV? Well, both vehicles have their own unique qualities, so it ultimately comes down to personal preference. The Dolphin excels in terms of seating comfort, providing ample space for occupants. The optimized footwell design and inclusion of heated front seats are definite advantages. On the other hand, the MG4 EV may have its own strengths when it comes to performance or other features.

The Nautical Theme

The first thing that catches the eye when looking at the BYD Dolphin is its unique nautical theme. From the naming of the vehicle to the design elements, it’s clear that the designers took inspiration from the ocean. The door handles have a distinctive shape, and even the dashboard and speaker grills have a different design that adds to the overall nautical feel. One notable feature is the color of the interior, which matches the exterior paint of the vehicle. It certainly stands out and complements the different paint choices available. However, if this bold color scheme isn’t your preference, you can opt for an all-black finish, which is a welcome option for those who prefer a more subdued design.

Eco-Friendly Features

In addition to the stylish design, the BYD Dolphin also comes with eco-friendly features. One standout feature is the use of vegan leather seats and a vegan leather steering wheel, which come as standard across all trims. This decision to use vegan materials demonstrates the manufacturer’s commitment to reducing its environmental impact. It’s a small but significant step towards sustainability, and it’s refreshing to see such attention to detail in this regard.

The Exterior Look

Of course, when it comes to design, opinions can vary greatly. The BYD Dolphin may not appeal to everyone, but in person, it does have a certain charm. Its frontal profile gives it a cute and friendly appearance. The compact size and rounded edges contribute to its overall appeal. It’s a vehicle that doesn’t take itself too seriously and embraces a more playful and fun aesthetic.

Better Than The MG4 EV?

Now comes the big question – is the BYD Dolphin better than the MG4 EV? While it ultimately comes down to personal preference, the Dolphin has some strong selling points. Its unique nautical theme and attention to detail in the interior design set it apart. The use of vegan leather and the option for different color schemes showcase the manufacturer’s commitment to eco-friendliness and customization.

In terms of performance and features, the BYD Dolphin is on par with the MG4 EV. Both vehicles offer impressive electric powertrains and advanced technological features. Safety features, connectivity options, and range are all comparable. Ultimately, the choice between the two will come down to individual preferences and priorities.

Share Your Thoughts

The BYD Dolphin certainly offers a distinctive design and eco-friendly features that set it apart from its competitors. However, whether it surpasses the MG4 EV or not is still up for debate. What do you think of the Dolphin’s nautical theme and overall design? Share your thoughts in the comment section below and let us know if you think it outperforms the MG4 EV or if you have any other electric vehicles in mind that could give it a run for its money.

Design and Color Options

When it comes to the design of the BYD Dolphin, it’s hard not to be impressed. The side profile of the car is sleek and stylish, with 16in alloys in the active trim. Moving up to the Boost and Comfort trims, you’ll find 17in two-tone finish alloys, adding a touch of elegance. Meanwhile, the design trim boasts stunning trone alloys that really catch the eye. As for the rear, it seamlessly integrates with the overall design of the vehicle, showcasing the attention to detail that BYD has put into the Dolphin.

In terms of color choices, the BYD Dolphin offers plenty of options for customers to choose from. The single-tone finishes are available in all trim levels, allowing you to personalize your Dolphin to match your style. However, what sets the design model apart is the two-tone finish, which adds a touch of sophistication and uniqueness to the exterior. It’s a small but appreciated detail that sets the Dolphin apart from its competitors.

Driver Assistance Systems

Moving on to the driver assistance systems, BYD has gone above and beyond in equipping the Dolphin with an impressive array of features. These systems come as standard across all trim levels, making the Dolphin stand out in terms of safety and convenience.

One of the standout features is the adaptive cruise control, which does an excellent job of regulating the distance between your car and the vehicle in front. Unlike some other systems, it operates smoothly and doesn’t feel jerky or abrupt. This is a welcome feature that adds to the overall driving experience.

Additionally, the Dolphin comes equipped with front and rear cross traffic alert, blind spot monitoring, emergency lane-keeping assistance, predictive collision warning, door opening warning, automatic emergency braking, intelligent speed limit control, lane departure warning and prevention, and a traffic sign recognition system. It’s rare to find all of these features as standard in a vehicle, but BYD has made it a priority to prioritize the safety of its customers.

360 Cameras and Parking Sensors

Another noteworthy feature of the BYD Dolphin is the inclusion of 360 cameras. These cameras provide a complete view of your surroundings, making parking and maneuvering in tight spaces a breeze. With the cameras fitted as standard, you won’t have to worry about blind spots or obstacles that may be hidden from your view. It’s a thoughtful addition that adds to the overall convenience and ease of driving the Dolphin.

Furthermore, all trim levels of the Dolphin come equipped with rear parking sensors. These sensors provide an added layer of assistance when parking, ensuring that you can navigate into tight spaces with confidence. It’s a small but invaluable feature that helps to enhance the overall driving experience.

In conclusion, the BYD Dolphin showcases impressive design elements, a wide range of color options, and a comprehensive set of driver assistance systems. With its sleek profile, attention to detail, and advanced safety features, the Dolphin certainly gives its competitors, such as the MG4 EV, a run for their money. The inclusion of 360 cameras and rear parking sensors as standard further enhances the convenience and ease of driving the Dolphin. BYD has raised the bar with the Dolphin, and other manufacturers could learn a thing or two from their approach to equipping their vehicles with top-notch features.

Comfort and Design

If you want the front parking sensors, you’ll have to go for the comfort and design trim. However, there are no complaints about the comfort and design of the BYD Dolphin. The visibility at the front and rear is excellent, making it easy to maneuver and park.
