    ⚡ Quick Verdict

    — Quick Verdict
Look, the 2026 GMC Hummer EV SUV is a massive, electric show-off machine. Its headline act is the new King Crab rear-steer mode, letting this enormous truck pivot with a tightness that feels completely wrong for its size. Pair that with the wild Watts to Freedom launch control and a potential 16.1 inches of ground clearance, and you’ve got off-road drama you won’t find anywhere else. But that drama comes with a sky-high price, average efficiency, and no third row. This isn’t your sensible family EV; it’s a costly weekend toy for those who want the most outrageous entrance at the campsite.

    ## What’s New for 2026
    – King Crab Rear-Steer Mode: The headline update. This new off-road mode heavily biases the four-wheel steering to the rear axle, allowing the SUV to pivot around its front wheels for an astonishingly tight turning circle. It’s also being delivered via over-the-air update to previous model year Hummer EVs.
    – Bidirectional Charging: New for 2026, the Hummer EV can now power external devices (Vehicle-to-Load) and, with an optional $2,000 home system, can even power your house during an outage (Vehicle-to-Home).
    – Google Maps Super Cruise Integration: When navigating with Google Maps on compatible highways, Super Cruise will now automatically position the vehicle in the correct lane for an upcoming interchange or exit.
    – Updated Damper Tuning: GMC has recalibrated the suspension for a smoother, more refined ride on pavement, addressing a common critique of the earlier models.
    – Carbon Fiber Edition: A new, limited-production model based on the 3X trim. It features Magnus Gray Matte paint, a Velocity Ember interior, and is the quickest-accelerating Hummer EV yet.
    – New Colors and Interiors: Two new exterior colors (Coastal Dune, Auburn Matte) and two new interior themes (Granite Drift, Stealth Eclipse) are available.

    ## Pricing and Trims
The 2026 Hummer EV SUV lineup starts at $97,200 for the 2X trim and $107,995 for the 3X. The main difference is power: the 2X runs a dual-motor setup with 570 hp (635 hp with the off-road pack), while the 3X uses a tri-motor system good for 830 hp, or nearly 1,000 hp in Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control mode.

    ✓ The Good

    • +Unmatched off-road theatre with King Crab mode and 16.1-inch Extract Mode clearance
    • +Blistering acceleration (3.5s 0-60 mph in 3X WTF mode)
    • +Surprisingly agile for its size thanks to four-wheel steering
    • +Standard Super Cruise with new Google Maps integration
    • +New bidirectional charging capability (V2L/V2H)

    ✗ The Trade-offs

    • −Prohibitively expensive, starting near $100,000
    • −Mediocre real-world efficiency and long DC fast-charge times
    • −No Apple CarPlay is a significant usability drawback
    • −Only two rows and five seats limits family versatility

    Pricing and Trims

The 2026 Hummer EV SUV lineup starts at $97,200 for the 2X trim and $107,995 for the 3X. The main difference is power: the 2X runs a dual-motor setup with 570 hp (635 hp with the off-road pack), while the 3X uses a tri-motor system good for 830 hp, or nearly 1,000 hp in Watts to Freedom (WTF) launch control mode.

If you’re serious about hitting the trails, the Extreme Off-Road Package ($10,000) is non-negotiable. It gets you front and rear locking differentials, heavy-duty underbody protection, Goodyear Wrangler Territory MT tyres, and underbody cameras. Our testing showed that while the standard brake-based traction control is capable, proper lockers give you the confidence this price demands. Just note, it’s not currently available on the 3X trim.

The Carbon Fiber Edition, based on the 3X, is the top-tier performance variant. Its exact price is subject to dealer markup due to limited production, but it includes unique styling and the quickest acceleration.

Our recommended “Sweet Spot” is the 2X with the Extreme Off-Road Package. It delivers the full Hummer experience—the incredible off-road kit, all the tech, and the brutal acceleration (0-60 mph in ~4.4 seconds with WTF)—for a total of $107,200. That saves you cash over a base 3X while adding genuine, necessary trail hardware.

    Driving Impressions

The updated damper tuning makes a real difference. The Hummer EV SUV still rides like the heavy truck it is, but hits are less jarring, and there’s less float over bumpy roads. It’s a solid step towards making it a bit more liveable day-to-day.

Trigger Watts to Freedom, and the theatre cranks up to maximum. The SUV hits a claimed 3.5-second 0-60 mph sprint. The experience is wild—the cabin fills with graphics and sounds as the air suspension drops the truck two inches for launch. We found the steering can tug a little under full throttle, so you need a firm grip to keep this 4,082-kilogram brute straight.

The four-wheel steering is this truck’s secret weapon. At low speeds, it gives the Hummer a shockingly tight turning circle, making car parks far less daunting than its size suggests. The new King Crab mode takes this further off-road, letting the rear end swing around in a way that feels both unnatural and incredibly effective for tight trails.

On the highway, Super Cruise remains one of the best hands-free systems out there. The new Google Maps integration works smoothly, slotting you into the correct lane for your route’s next turn. One-pedal driving is good, though the highest regeneration setting is a bit jerky for smooth cruising. Using the regen paddle on the steering wheel gives you better control.

    Off-Road Capability

This is where the Hummer EV SUV earns its keep. In Extract Mode, the air suspension lifts the body to a staggering 16.1 inches of ground clearance. It looks almost ridiculous and lets the truck scramble over obstacles that would stop any other production SUV cold.

The new King Crab mode is a genuine game-changer for tight trails. It slashes the turning circle, letting this 5.5-metre-long SUV navigate switchbacks and rocky gaps with a precision that defies its size. Crab Walk, which moves the vehicle diagonally, is still more of a party trick, but King Crab has real, usable off-road benefit.

The value of the Extreme Off-Road Package was clear during our testing. On a simulated V-section obstacle, the standard truck’s brake-based traction control managed to send power to the wheels with grip and climb out. However, as we noted, you could easily get embarrassed on a serious trail without locking differentials. For anyone planning to use even half of this truck’s capability, the package—with its lockers and underbody armour—is a must-buy.

    Interior, Comfort and Tech

The cabin is functional and tough, but not luxurious. A 13.4-inch central touchscreen and an 11-inch digital driver display dominate the dash. The system runs Google Built-In, giving you native Google Maps and the Play Store. But the complete lack of Apple CarPlay is a real, frustrating letdown that messes with the seamless smartphone integration many drivers rely on.

Storage is plentiful, from the deep centre console to big door pockets. The Bose 14-speaker audio system pumps out powerful sound that can drown out wind noise. Climate controls mix physical buttons with touch-sensitive sliders, which we found less intuitive than proper switches. Thankfully, voice commands for things like the seat heaters work perfectly.

The 5-passenger, 2-row layout is a big compromise compared to three-row rivals like the Rivian R1S. There’s plenty of legroom in both rows, but families needing more than five seats are out of luck. Cargo space measures 81.8 cubic feet with the rear seats folded, accessed via a side-swing tailgate. The e-trunk (front trunk) offers a handy 11.3 cubic feet of lockable, lit storage, which is also the perfect spot to stash the four removable roof panels.

    Range, Charging and Efficiency

The Hummer EV SUV packs a massive 170 kWh battery on an 800-volt architecture. Efficiency is its weak point. GM-estimated range tops out at 319 miles (513 km) for the 2X and 300 miles (483 km) for the 3X. In real-world driving, especially if you use its performance or off-road modes, expect numbers well below that.

DC fast charging is advertised at a peak of 300 kW. In our testing at a 350 kW Electrify America station, we first saw a disappointing 115 kW peak. On a second, warmer session, the truck hit a much healthier ~200 kW, adding 100 miles (161 km) in about 14 minutes. A full 10-80% charge still takes about an hour. An NACS adapter is included for access to the Tesla Supercharger network.

New for 2026 is bidirectional charging. With an optional home system, the Hummer can now power your home during an outage, adding a heap of practical utility.

Value three-row electric SUV for non-off-roaders

The Hummer EV SUV exists in a rarefied segment. Its closest spiritual rival is the Rivian R1S, which offers more seats and better efficiency. Beyond that, it competes with the ultra-luxury Mercedes-Benz G 580 with EQ Technology, the similarly massive Cadillac Escalade IQ, and the value-oriented Hyundai Ioniq 9 for those who prioritise space over spectacle. 2026 GMC Hummer EV SUV vs Rivian R1S: Which Is Better?

The battle between these two is a clash of philosophies. The Rivian R1S starts at $74,300, a massive $22,900 less than the Hummer EV SUV 2X. You’re paying the Hummer premium for its sheer scale, theatrical features like King Crab and WTF mode, and a more intimidating presence on the road.

In pure performance, both are brutally quick. The Hummer 3X in WTF mode and the Rivian Quad-Motor both sit around the 3.5-second mark for 0-60 mph. The difference is in delivery: the Rivian’s independent quad-motor setup gives you more precise, intelligent per-wheel torque vectoring. The Hummer’s power is more brutal and less nuanced—it’s about shock and awe.

Efficiency is no contest. The Rivian R1S is way more efficient, hitting up to 73/65 MPGe compared to the Hummer’s heavy, brick-like profile. The R1S Max Pack can travel up to 380 miles (612 km) on a single charge, nearly 80 miles (129 km) more than the Hummer’s best guess, despite using a smaller battery. For road trips, the Rivian is the clear winner.

Off-road, the approaches differ. The Hummer’s King Crab mode, Extract Mode (16.1 in clearance), and Crab Walk are unmatched for spectacle and raw, mechanical capability. It feels like a monster truck. The Rivian’s quad-motor system offers a more technological, precise approach with instant torque vectoring to each wheel. The Hummer wins on trailhead drama and water fording; the Rivian wins on technical execution and composure.

For families, the Rivian R1S wins outright. It has three rows, seven seats, and up to 104 cubic feet of cargo space. The Hummer is strictly a two-row, five-seat vehicle with 81.8 cubic feet. The Rivian also has Apple CarPlay, a big usability advantage. The Hummer’s interior feels more industrial and durable, but the Rivian’s is more refined and family-friendly.

Both support fast charging, but the Hummer’s 800-volt architecture gives it a theoretical edge. In practice, we found charging speeds heavily dependent on station hardware and battery preconditioning. Both now include NACS adapters for Tesla Supercharging.

Our pick is the Rivian R1S for nine out of ten buyers. It’s more practical, more efficient, more versatile, and significantly cheaper. It is the better electric SUV for daily life and family duty. The GMC Hummer EV SUV wins on the day you want to conquer an impossible-looking trail, execute a tank turn at a campsite, or simply arrive with more sheer, unadulterated spectacle than anything else on the road.

    > Buy the GMC Hummer EV SUV if you want maximum theatre, water-fording capability beyond every direct rival, and an off-road party trick (King Crab) that draws crowds at trailheads. > Buy the Rivian R1S if you have a family, do annual road trips, value efficiency and range, and want torque-vectoring sophistication. > Our pick is the Rivian R1S for nine out of ten buyers — but the Hummer wins on the day you actually need to climb a vertical face on your batteries alone.

    Safety and Warranty

The 2026 Hummer EV SUV comes with a standard suite of safety tech, including enhanced automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, blind-spot monitoring, HD Surround Vision, and Teen Driver. Super Cruise hands-free highway driving is also standard. However, with only six airbags, protection feels a bit light for such a large vehicle.

As of this writing, neither the NHTSA nor the IIHS has published crash-test ratings for the Hummer EV. The NHTSA has issued two recalls for 2026 models: one for an inaccurate owner’s manual weight specification and another for potentially loose electrical connectors in the battery pack.

Warranty coverage includes a 3-year/36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty, and an 8-year/100,000-mile battery and propulsion component warranty.

Who Should Buy It — and Who Shouldn’t

The 2026 GMC Hummer EV SUV is for a very specific buyer. It’s for the enthusiast who sees their vehicle as a weekend adventure toy and a statement piece, not a practical daily driver. It’s for the off-roader with a budget well over $100,000 who wants the most dramatic, capable, and attention-grabbing machine available. It’s for the person who already has a sensible sedan or SUV in the garage and wants a battery-powered monster for fun.

It is not the right choice for families needing three rows of seating. It’s not the pick for the efficiency-minded EV adopter or the road-tripper who prioritises range and fast-charging logistics. If you’re after a more intelligent, efficient, and versatile electric SUV, the Hummer’s compromises will frustrate you.

    ⚡ Our Verdict

An Off-Road Spectacle That Prioritizes Theatre Over Practicality

The 2026 GMC Hummer EV SUV is a rolling spectacle, an exercise in glorious excess that happens to be electric. Its new King Crab mode turns up the dial on what was already the most theatrical off-road experience on sale. It’s shockingly quick, surprisingly manoeuvrable for its size, and packed with tech like standard Super Cruise. But its big flaws—average efficiency, no third-row seating, a frustrating no-Apple-CarPlay policy, and a six-figure price tag—make it a deeply compromised daily driver. It earns a 7.6 out of 10 as an incredible niche toy, but a poor universal SUV. For the tiny group of buyers who prioritise trail domination and jaw-dropping presence above all else, there’s nothing else like it. For everyone else, more sensible and versatile options exist.

    FAQs

How much does the 2026 GMC Hummer EV SUV cost?

The 2026 Hummer EV SUV starts at $97,200 for the 2X trim and $107,995 for the 3X trim. Adding the recommended Extreme Off-Road Package brings the 2X to $107,200.

What is King Crab mode and how is it different from Crab Walk?

King Crab is a new off-road mode that heavily uses the rear-wheel steering to pivot the truck tightly around its front wheels, drastically reducing the turning circle for trails. Crab Walk is a separate mode that angles all four wheels to move the vehicle diagonally.

    What’s the real-world DC fast-charging speed?

While advertised at 300 kW, we observed real-world peaks of around 200 kW at a 350 kW station after the battery warmed up. A 10-80% charge takes approximately one hour.

Does the Hummer EV SUV support Apple CarPlay?

No. The vehicle uses Google Built-In exclusively, which includes Google Maps and the Play Store, but does not offer Apple CarPlay or Android Auto. This is a significant drawback for iPhone users.

How does it compare to the Rivian R1S for families?

The Rivian R1S is far superior for families. It offers three rows of seating for seven, more total cargo space, greater efficiency, and a lower starting price. The Hummer is strictly a two-row, five-seat vehicle.

    What’s the towing capacity?

The Hummer EV SUV can tow up to 7,500 pounds when properly equipped. Towing will significantly reduce the driving range.

Is the Extreme Off-Road Package worth the extra $10,000?

For anyone planning to use the Hummer’s off-road capabilities, yes. It adds essential hardware like front and rear locking differentials, heavy-duty underbody protection, and mud-terrain tyres that are crucial for serious trail use.
