None of the materials have changed in here. All that’s changed is the color and for some reason this is just coming off a little less premium to me in this gray. If it was all a darker color, I think it would feel better but there’s just something of the windows 97 to it. Dated basically.
The steering wheel is leather-wrapped, but the seats are fabric. Still, this pattern, I’m not sure about it, kind of looks like the seats are faded. They haven’t. Obviously one of my friends likened it to a municipal bus from Stoke on Trent. I’ve not ridden the bus in Stoke. So you can tell me in the comments if that’s right or not.
I’m going to start by talking about the clutch. This has a very, very clever clutch system, basically where it’s fly by wire and if you don’t know what that means, that means there’s no physical attachment between the clutch pedal and the actual clutch in the gearbox, it’s all being done by computers. What this means is that, on the motorway, the car can turn the engine off and coast when you’re going downhill or something like that, which is, in theory, saves you fuel, gets you better fuel economy and reduces your emissions.
Obviously, there are a couple of downsides. If the clutch pedal is not attached to the clutch, it means there is no feeling of any kind in the clutch pedal. I found throughout this week that it lacked the feedback and engagement that I would normally expect from a manual gearbox. It’s a bit disconcerting at first, but you do get used to it. It also takes a little bit of getting used to when you’re coming to a stop. When you’re in neutral, the engine will turn off, and then when you press the clutch pedal, it comes back on. It’s a bit strange and it is a little bit jarring when you first start driving it.
48V Mild Hybrid System
The 48V mild hybrid system is a really nice addition. It’s quite seamless in operation; you don’t really notice it. What it does is it assists the engine, primarily when you’re accelerating. So, as you’re going through the gears, it’ll give you a little bit of extra torque, a little bit of extra oomph to help you along. And that’s quite nice. It makes the car feel a little bit more sprightly.
I have to admit that I struggle with feeding the clutch in smoothly when driving the Hyundai Bayon. Although I haven’t had a problem with stalling the car, the set-off can be a bit juddery. It can be quite disconcerting when driving down the motorway and the engine turns off. I understand that it’s a part of the car’s system, but I still need to get used to it. At the moment, I can’t see any noticeable benefit in terms of extra miles per gallon compared to the previous car I tested, which had the same powertrain but a normal clutch. This extra complexity and odd feeling make me question the true advantages of this system in the real world.
Despite my reservations about the hybrid system, there are plenty of good things to say about the Hyundai Bayon. Firstly, the platform itself is excellent. It has proven itself in other models such as the I20 and the Stonic. The chassis provides a lot of grip, which is fantastic. Additionally, all the pedal weights are light, making it a relaxing and easy car to drive, particularly on the motorway. The Bayon also comes with smart features, including auto-steering in the manual model. If you opt for the automatic version, you can enjoy radar cruise control, eliminating the clutch-related issues and allowing the car to drive itself down the motorway.

While the Hyundai Bayon excels in being light and agile on lower speed or smooth roads, it falters a bit when it comes to driving on broken surfaces. The suspension can feel a little bit crashy, which is disappointing considering that it could have been a very comfortable ride for a vehicle of this size. However, once you hit a faster road or a motorway, the Bayon settles down nicely and becomes a great motorway cruiser. The incorporation of the Torque engine and smart cruise assists contribute to a relaxed driving experience.

However, it is worth noting that if you prefer to have the seat all the way down, you might find the angle quite steep. Nevertheless, during 8 hours of motorway driving, the Bayon proved to be very comfortable and provided a satisfactory driving experience.
