The BMW XM, the first-ever 5-seat plug-in hybrid SUV from BMW, has a striking exterior design that has divided opinions. Upon the release of the first photos, many found it weird and ugly, but upon seeing it in person, one can’t help but appreciate its brutish and cold styling. Although not as ungainly as initially perceived, the overall design exudes a certain charm that sets it apart from other SUVs in its class.
With a staggering 644 horsepower and a starting price of $160,000, the BMW XM is not aimed at the faint-hearted. This powerhouse is the second model in BMW’s M performance sub-brand, after the iconic M1 sports car from decades ago. Unlike other BMW models, the XM is not based on any existing model but is a standalone creation built to compete with rival brands like Porsche, Aston Martin, Audi, and Lamborghini in the ultra-fast SUV segment.
The BMW XM enters a highly competitive market, going head-to-head with the likes of Porsche, Aston Martin, Audi, and Lamborghini, all of whom offer incredibly fast SUVs with hefty price tags. These rivals have set the bar high, so the question remains: does the XM have what it takes to match or even surpass them?
Interior and Technology
Step inside the BMW XM, and you’ll be greeted by a luxurious cabin equipped with state-of-the-art technology. The interior design is sleek and modern, reflecting the car’s overall performance-driven nature. From the premium materials to the advanced infotainment system and driver-assistance features, the XM offers a comfortable and connected driving experience.
Behind the wheel of the BMW XM, you’ll experience a driving sensation unlike any other. The combination of the robust powertrain, precise handling, and intelligent all-wheel drive system ensures that you’re in control of every twist and turn. Whether you’re cruising on the highway or tackling winding mountain roads, the XM delivers a thrilling and exhilarating ride.
The Bold Design
The road definitely makes me appreciate what BMW is trying to do here. They’re trying to make a statement both for the brand and for the people who are going to buy this vehicle, which is why they made this so bold. There are a couple of different design elements going on that catch your eye.
The Signature Split Kidney Grill
One design element that always stands out in BMW models is the split kidney grill. In recent models, these grills have been getting bigger and bigger, making a bold statement. To further emphasize this point, BMW has added light signatures around both of the grills. At night, it looks pretty cool and adds a touch of uniqueness to the vehicle’s front fascia.
The Dark Colors Enhance the Look
I’ll also say that this XM does look better in darker colors. It sort of masks a lot of the design elements that some people may not like. The XM’s design has a lot of angles and different things going on at the same time, but it all sort of blends in when everything is a dark blue or black. It adds a touch of sophistication and elegance to the overall look of the car.
Functional Design Elements
Moving to the side of the XM, you can truly appreciate its size and proportions. It shares the same wheelbase as BMW’s three-row X7, but it is shorter in length and lower in height by 2 and 1 1/2 inches respectively. However, it does sit a little bit wider, adding to its road presence. This wider stance gives it a more aggressive and powerful look.
BMW has also included some interesting design elements in the XM, such as the contrasting panel on some models. This panel adds a touch of visual interest and breaks up the overall design, giving it a more dynamic and sporty appearance.
In conclusion, the 2023 BMW XM stands out with its bold and distinctive design. The signature split kidney grill, the use of dark colors, and the inclusion of functional and contrasting design elements all contribute to its overall appeal. It may have a lot going on in terms of design, but it all blends together harmoniously, making a statement on the road.
2023 BMW XM Review: BMW’s $160,000 Plug-in M
The BMW XM can be obtained in a stunning light gold color, which accentuates the car’s elegance. The 23-inch alloy wheels, also in gold, add to the car’s luxurious appearance. One remarkable feature is the black trim that runs along the lower part of the car, seamlessly blending with the darker colors. This design element effectively masks some of the car’s features, enhancing its overall aesthetic appeal. Moving towards the rear, the aggressive design from the front continues with the wide and well-defined shoulders. Additionally, the car showcases two stacked exhaust tips on each side, a unique and stylish touch. Interestingly, the back of the car lacks a BMW logo and instead prominently displays the XM label, with the BMW insignia etched into the glass. This omission of stamped metal badging is a curious detail, giving the rear an intriguing and minimalist feel. What are your thoughts on the styling? Share your opinions in the comments below.
Under the hood of the XM lies a formidable combination of power sources. Powered by a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 engine and an electric motor, the XM boasts an impressive output of 644 horsepower and 590 lound feet of torque. BMW claims that the car can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.1 seconds. However, Car and Driver’s testing yielded an even more impressive time of 3 seconds flat, demonstrating the XM’s exceptional speed and agility.
Advanced Plug-in Hybrid Technology
As a plug-in hybrid, the XM offers the benefits of electric power combined with the convenience of a traditional combustion engine. This combination allows for improved fuel efficiency and reduced emissions, while still delivering thrilling performance. With its electric motor and V8 engine working together harmoniously, the XM achieves an impressive balance between power and sustainability. BMW has truly embraced the future of automotive technology with the XM’s advanced plug-in hybrid drivetrain.
Step inside the XM, and you’re greeted by a sumptuous interior that exudes luxury. Premium materials, exquisite craftsmanship, and cutting-edge technology create an immersive and comfortable driving experience. The driver and passengers enjoy a wealth of features and amenities, including a high-resolution infotainment system, advanced driver-assistance systems, and customizable ambient lighting. Every detail has been meticulously designed to provide the utmost comfort and convenience.
The Price of Excellence
With all its impressive features and advanced technology, it comes as no surprise that the BMW XM comes with a price tag of $160,000. This hefty price places the XM in the luxury segment, reserved for those seeking the pinnacle of automotive performance and refinement. The XM’s price reflects the level of craftsmanship, engineering, and exclusivity that BMW has poured into this remarkable vehicle. For those who demand the best that money can buy, the XM is a worthy investment.
The 2023 BMW XM is an impressive powerhouse, boasting a mind-boggling acceleration time of just 4 seconds. This level of speed is truly remarkable and sets the XM apart from its competitors. Power is seamlessly transferred through an 8-speed automatic transmission and a full-time all-wheel-drive system, ensuring optimal efficiency on the road. Speaking of efficiency, the XM can also travel up to 30 miles on electric power alone before switching to gas power. However, it’s worth noting that its gas mileage, rated at 14 miles per gallon by the EPA, leaves much to be desired.
Extra Power with the XM Label Red
If the already exhilarating performance of the base model XM isn’t enough for you, BMW offers the option of the XM Label Red. This upgrade boosts the total horsepower to an impressive 738, all for an additional cost of $25,000 over the sticker price. With this extra power, the XM Label Red ensures an even more exhilarating driving experience that is sure to satisfy adrenaline enthusiasts.
Stepping inside the 2023 BMW XM, it’s easy to see why it comes with such a hefty price tag. Even though this is considered the base model, it is still fully equipped with high-quality materials throughout the cabin. Carbon fiber, brushed metal, and leather can be found everywhere, creating a luxurious atmosphere that exudes sophistication and class. The interior feels solid and well-built, adding to the overall premium experience.
Impressive Technology Features
One of the standout features of the XM is its curved display, providing the driver with a configurable instrument panel. This modern touch adds a futuristic element to the dashboard and allows for personalized information display. The infotainment system is equally impressive, offering wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Moreover, the fact that it is a touchscreen adds convenience, but BMW also includes a rotary knob for extra redundancy. The inclusion of physical buttons, especially a volume knob, is a favored feature among many users.
In conclusion, the 2023 BMW XM is a true marvel in the automotive industry. With its lightning-fast acceleration, advanced technology features, and luxurious interior, it’s easy to see why it commands a price tag of $160,000. The XM sets a standard for performance and design, making it an enticing option for those in search of a high-end plug-in M model.
The Screen and Exterior
The 2023 BMW XM features a bright and highly responsive screen, making it enjoyable to interact with. At first glance, it may give the impression of having a panoramic moon roof, but unfortunately, that is not the case. The roof is actually fixed, which can be disappointing as it contributes to a slightly dark and claustrophobic feel inside the cabin. Having a moon roof would have certainly helped in opening up the space.
Amenities and Features
Moving on to other amenities, the BMW XM offers heated and cooled front seats with massaging capabilities. However, the massaging function falls a bit short considering its hefty price tag. On the bright side, the car comes equipped with a high-quality color heads-up display, providing a plethora of useful information to the driver.
In terms of storage and connectivity, the vehicle offers wireless smartphone charging and a single USB charger in a convenient compartment. Additionally, there are cup holders that can either heat or cool your beverages. A storage compartment with a USBC charge port and additional storage space is also present.
Paddle Shifters and Customization Options
One particular feature that stands out in the BMW XM is the presence of M1 and M2 buttons alongside the paddle shifters on the steering wheel. These buttons allow for customization of various car settings, giving the driver the ability to access their preferred setup with just a single push. The number of settings available is impressive and in a few minutes, I will demonstrate the extent of customization options.
The Shifter – A Constant Source of Confusion
One aspect that remains frustrating is the shifter setup. It seems like every time a new BMW model is released, there is a different shifter arrangement. This inconsistency can be perplexing for drivers who have become accustomed to a particular layout in their previous BMWs. It would be beneficial for the brand to establish a standardized shifter configuration across their range to provide a seamless driving experience.
In conclusion, while the 2023 BMW XM boasts impressive features and customization options, there are some areas that fall short of expectations. The fixed roof without a moon roof option may make the cabin feel confined, and the massaging function on the seats could be more robust. However, the inclusion of M1 and M2 buttons for customizing car settings is a noteworthy feature. Let’s hope that BMW addresses the confusion surrounding the shifter arrangement in future models.
Before getting the 2023 BMW XM on the road, let’s take a look at the various customizable features that are available. If you’ve been in a modern BMW vehicle, you’ll find this familiar. The XM offers Comfort, Sport, and Sport Plus driving modes, each with their own distinct characteristics.
For each driving mode, there is a range of settings that can be fine-tuned. These settings allow you to personalize your driving experience to suit your preferences. Additionally, the XM offers M1 and M2 configurations for the steering wheel.
With the M1 configuration, I chose to customize it to be fully electric. By simply pushing a button, the car switches into full electric mode, providing a quiet and environmentally-friendly driving experience. On the other hand, with the M2 configuration, I set all the settings to their maximum values. This transforms the entire car into an aggressive driving machine, perfect for those who enjoy pushing the limits on the road.
Although the customization options may initially appear overwhelming, I appreciate the level of control and flexibility they offer. It’s impressive to see the extent to which every aspect of the car can be tailored to individual preferences. What’s more, accessing these customization options is as simple as pushing a button, making it a convenient and user-friendly feature.
One aspect of the XM that may cause frustration is the placement of certain controls. For instance, the lever for shifting into drive or reverse is not where you would typically expect it to be. To engage drive, you need to push the lever over and up, an unconventional design choice that takes some getting used to. This unconventional placement can easily result in accidentally engaging a mode that you did not intend to, leading to annoyance and confusion while driving.
While this may seem like a minor inconvenience, it does become increasingly frustrating over time. It is a small detail that stands out in an otherwise seamless driving experience, highlighting the importance of ergonomic and intuitive design in automotive engineering.
An Impressive Array of Options
One of the highlights of the 2023 BMW XM is the sheer number of options available for customization. Whether it’s the driving mode or the myriad of fine-tuning possibilities, the XM presents a multitude of choices to suit individual preferences.
While it may take some time to navigate through all the different settings, the degree of control offered is commendable. From adjusting the steering response to modifying the suspension stiffness, there is a setting for every aspect of the car’s performance. This level of customization allows drivers to truly tailor the XM to their specific driving style and preferences.
At first glance, the extensive customization options may seem overwhelming. However, once you become familiar with the system, it becomes a truly exciting and empowering feature that lets you create a driving experience that is uniquely yours.
The 2023 BMW XM is a plug-in hybrid vehicle, meaning it offers several powertrain modes for optimal driving experience. Firstly, there is the hybrid mode which utilizes both the gas engine and the electric motor together. This mode provides a balance between power and efficiency, suitable for everyday driving scenarios.
For those who want to drive purely on electric power, the XM offers an electric mode. In this mode, the vehicle relies solely on the electric motor, allowing for a quiet and emission-free driving experience. The electric mode is capable of reaching speeds of up to 87 mph, making it suitable for highway driving as well.
The e-control mode is designed to preserve the battery’s charge for later use. This mode is ideal for situations where you may want to conserve electric power for a specific part of your journey. By saving the battery’s charge, you can switch to electric mode when you reach your desired destination, such as a city center with restricted emission zones.
Rear Seat Comfort
Moving on to the rear seats of the 2023 BMW XM, it is clear that the designers have taken passenger comfort into consideration. Despite being a 5-seater vehicle, there is ample room for passengers in the rear. The generous space between the back of the front seats and the legs of the rear passengers ensures a comfortable and luxurious ride, even for tall adults.
The rear seats of the XM are equipped with individual climate control settings. This means that each passenger can adjust the temperature to their liking, ensuring personalized comfort. Additionally, both of the outboard seats come with three-way heated seats, perfect for colder climates or during winter months.
The seats themselves are positioned slightly further back, creating a cozy and intimate atmosphere in the cabin. The use of quilted leather upholstery adds a touch of elegance and luxury to the interior. A wide armrest with cup holders provides convenience for passengers, while USB-C charge ports are located below the armrest and built into the seatbacks, allowing for easy device charging during the journey.
In terms of improvements, it would be desirable for the XM to offer a power recline option for the rear seats, especially considering its price point of $160,000. Some of its high-end competitors already provide this feature, which may be seen as a missed opportunity for BMW.
Overall, the 2023 BMW XM offers a range of powertrain modes, ensuring versatility and efficiency on the road. The comfortable and spacious rear seats, along with luxurious cabin features, make it an appealing choice for those in search of a high-performance plug-in hybrid vehicle.
Cargo Area and Seating
Turning to the cargo area on the XM, the load floor back here does sit a little high, but overall this has about 64 cubic feet of space space thats just under BMWs X5. So there is some really usable space back here and if you do need more, the rear seats are split: 40, 20, 40 and they all fold flat to get extra cargo back there.
And, if you’re wondering what this bag is. This is probably the fanciest cargo bag. You’ve ever seen for the charge cable of this plug-in hybrid.
Now that we’re on the road, a couple of things jump out at you the minute you get in the XM and start driving. The first thing you notice is the ride. Quality can usually feel very stiff, part of the problem are the springs. They are steel springs, not an air suspension setup.
Then you’ve got the low-profile tires and the really large 23-inch rims. So all of that adds up to a pretty rough ride kind of no matter what setting you had it in. I do wish BMW had programmed in a little more of a comfort setting for the suspension for daily driving, but no, that’s not the case.
The other big thing that I’ve noticed is that when you’re driving this vehicle pretty hard, there are two really impressive things about the XM. For one, this weighs 6000 lb, That’s a very heavy vehicle, that’s hundreds of pounds more than BMW’s X7, which is a larger vehicle, but it never feels like it weighs 6000 lb.
The second thing is the powertrain. The powertrain is amazing. It is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo. V8 it’s, making over 750 horsepower unbelievable amount of power for an SUV. That means that this car is gonna be fast really fast a zero to sixty time of three point eight seconds.
Price and Conclusion
Now, as for the price, this BMW XM starts at around $160,000. Which is a large sum of money, but for what you get for what you’re getting in this car. It almost seems like a bargain, given the performance, given the amount of luxury that you have in here.
Overall, the 2023 BMW XM is an impressive plug-in M vehicle that combines space, power, and luxury. While the ride quality might be a bit stiff, the performance and features make up for it. If you’re in the market for a high-end plug-in SUV, the XM is definitely worth considering.
Suspension and Handling
When you toss the 2023 BMW XM into a corner, it does not give off a feeling of being light, but at the same time, it does not feel excessively heavy either. The suspension plays a significant role in creating this unique driving experience. The XM is equipped with active electronically controlled roll bars, which ensures that when maneuvering around turns, the vehicle remains remarkably flat. There is no noticeable body roll, even when taking sharp turns at a decent speed. This feature adds to the overall driving pleasure, especially for a high-performance vehicle like the XM.
Power and Performance
The XM truly comes to life when you push it hard on twisty roads. The base model, with its impressive 644 horsepower, is more than enough to provide an exhilarating driving experience. There is no need to upgrade to the more powerful version of the XM to have a blast behind the wheel. One aspect that stands out is how well the electric motor and V8 engine work together. There are no noticeable gaps in acceleration or power delivery. You can stay in the same gear without any issues, thanks to a wide band of torque that kicks in and propels you out of turns. Driving the XM in this manner is an absolute joy.
Daily Driving Experience
While the XM excels in terms of power and performance, there can be some frustrations during everyday driving situations. Acceleration can be sluggish when you are not pushing the car to its limits. When merging onto highways or attempting to pass slower vehicles during normal driving conditions, it takes a notable amount of time for the car to decide how and when to provide the necessary power. This delay can be quite frustrating, especially when you are expecting a quick response from a vehicle of this caliber.
Acceleration and Maneuverability
The first aspect that needs to be addressed in this review of the 2023 BMW XM is its acceleration. Upon pressing the accelerator, there is an unfortunate delay before the car starts to move forward. This delay could be attributed to the time it takes for the turbos to spool up or for the electric motor to engage. Nevertheless, it is a frustrating issue commonly found in other plug-in hybrids available on the market.
Additionally, the XM boasts rear wheel steering, providing improved maneuverability at low speeds. The rear wheels turn in the opposite direction to the front wheels, granting the driver greater agility. However, at higher speeds, the rear wheels follow the same direction as the front wheels. While some may appreciate this feature, I personally find it to be an excessive level of neutrality in a high-performance vehicle. It lacks the rear-wheel drive bias that one would expect in such a car, which is a disappointment.
When it comes to visibility, the XM offers decent sightlines when looking straight ahead. However, as soon as you need to check your blind spots or look over your shoulder, you’ll notice that the width of the B-pillar significantly obstructs your view. This can be problematic, especially when changing lanes on the freeway or maneuvering through tight spaces. Furthermore, the XM’s sloping profile and lower roofline make it even more challenging to see behind you.
In terms of competition, the 2023 BMW XM faces some strong rivals in its class. While this plug-in M model certainly has its merits, it struggles to stand out among its competitors. Other vehicles in the same price range offer similar features and performance, and some even address the shortcomings mentioned earlier in a more satisfactory manner.
It is crucial for BMW to constantly innovate and improve to remain competitive in this segment. Buyers considering the XM should weigh their options carefully and thoroughly compare it to its counterparts before making a final decision.
The 2023 BMW XM: A $160,000 Plug-in M
The 2023 BMW XM is an impressive offering from the German automaker, with a price tag of $160,000. It enters a highly competitive market, going head-to-head with some of the most esteemed luxury SUVs in the world, such as the Aston Martin DBX, the Lamborghini Urus, the Audi RSQ8, and the Porsche Cayenne GT Turbo. However, the XM sets itself apart by featuring a plug-in hybrid powertrain, giving it an edge in terms of livability and usability.
A Dual-Mode Powertrain for Versatile Performance
One of the standout features of the BMW XM is its dual-mode powertrain. On weekdays, you can opt for the electric motor, embracing the environmental-friendly side of the vehicle while commuting or running errands. But when the urge for exhilarating performance strikes, the XM is ready to unleash its full powertrain. This versatility means that the XM delivers the best of both worlds, making it an enticing option for buyers seeking a dynamic driving experience.
Rivalry on the Road
Despite being slightly heavier than its competitors and weighed down by its electric component, the BMW XM leaves no doubt about its driving capabilities. In fact, it is an undeniable riot to drive. The handling is nothing short of phenomenal, ensuring that every twist and turn on the road is met with precision and excitement. For those in the market for a high-performance luxury SUV, the XM is undeniably a contender that deserves a test drive.
Pros and Cons
The BMW XM has a lot to offer, but it is important to consider its pros and cons. On the positive side, it is a sheer delight to drive, providing a sense of lightness that belies its actual weight. Moreover, the XM strikes a balance between size, comfort, and practicality, making it a well-rounded option. However, given its high price tag, some may expect more luxurious interior finishes. Additionally, the ride quality can be rough at times, which might be a drawback for those seeking a smoother driving experience. Lastly, the distinct and bold looks of the XM may not appeal to everyone’s tastes.
The Reasoning behind the BMW XM
Whether or not you are a fan of its appearance, it is easy to understand why BMW introduced the XM. With this high-performance SUV, BMW has positioned itself to compete with its rivals in the top-tier luxury market. The XM offers the power, prestige, and performance expected in this segment, allowing BMW enthusiasts to have a formidable option within their beloved brand.
In conclusion, the 2023 BMW XM is an impressive addition to the luxury SUV market. With its unique plug-in hybrid powertrain, it offers versatility and eco-consciousness without compromising on performance. While it may have some drawbacks, the overall driving experience, handling, and practicality make the XM a compelling choice for those seeking a high-end SUV.

From every angle, the XM commands attention, making it clear that this is a vehicle built to stand out on the road.
Interior and Comfort

The sporty elements are carried over from the exterior, with carbon fiber trim and Alcantara accents throughout. The seats are incredibly comfortable, providing excellent support even during spirited driving. The cockpit is driver-focused, with intuitive controls and a digital instrument cluster that keeps all vital information within easy reach.
Performance and Powertrain
Under the hood of the 2023 BMW XM lies a hybrid powertrain that combines the best of both worlds: electrification and performance. The XM is equipped with a potent twin-turbo V8 engine, delivering exhilarating power with every push of the pedal. Paired with an electric motor and a high-capacity battery, this plug-in M offers impressive acceleration and enhanced fuel efficiency. The XM seamlessly transitions between electric and combustion power, providing a smooth and dynamic driving experience.

The infotainment system is intuitive and user-friendly, with a large touchscreen display that seamlessly integrates with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. The XM also offers a suite of safety features, including adaptive cruise control, lane-keeping assist, and automatic emergency braking, ensuring a safe and enjoyable driving experience.
Price and Conclusion
With a starting price of $160,000, the 2023 BMW XM is certainly a luxury vehicle that comes at a premium. However, considering the exceptional design, performance, and technology packed into this plug-in M, it’s a price worth paying for BMW enthusiasts who crave both power and sustainability. The XM proves that you don’t have to sacrifice performance for efficiency, offering the best of both worlds in one stunning package. Whether you’re a fan of electrification or simply looking for a high-performance vehicle, the 2023 BMW XM is a worthy contender in the luxury hybrid segment.
The 2023 BMW XM is a fierce contender in the world of high-performance plug-in hybrid SUVs. Its unique design, combined with its impressive power output and advanced technology, sets it apart from the competition. Although the verdict is still out on whether it can surpass its rivals in terms of performance and driving experience, the XM is undeniably a bold statement from BMW’s M performance division.
The 2023 BMW XM is a technological marvel, seamlessly blending power, efficiency, and luxury. Nevertheless, the overall driving experience of the XM is bound to impress anyone with a need for speed and performance.
